So I went to the eye doctor today and ordered new glasses. My prescription has changed so it wasn't really an option. I have been wearing bifocals for a long time. I went the cheap way the first time I got them and got bottom of the line lenses, they were horrible. After that I have been ordering a higher quality lens and it's a huge difference and the price reflects that. I have insurance but still had to pay over $300 for a pair of glasses. Yes, I added transitions and glare protection but sheesh!!!
You can have your eyes examined by your Optician, and take his Rx to someplace like Lenscrafters or Eyemasters to get it filled. They have all the styles, colors for the lenses, and the transitions, for a FRACTION of the price your Optician would charge. Btw, your Optician is required by law to give you a copy of the Rx if you ask for it.
That was an optician. My vision ins is separate from my medical ins. With the vision ins an exam is only $10, I didn't even use up all the frame allowance. The lenses is where they get me. They won't pay for progressive lenses but will pay all but $40 for line in bifocals. They should pay the same amount toward lenses regardless of if they are progressive or line in.
I use zenni optical (zennioptical.com) The last pair I got at a glasses place cost me $325. I got almost the exact same thing (different design) for less then $75 - ultra thin lenses, polarized, anti-scratch, anti-smudge with 4 pairs of clip on sun glasses.
When you get your Rx, have then do the pupilary distance measurement.
