I volunteered to create a game basket for a silent auction fund raiser at our church.
What would you like to have in a basket that would get you to bid on it?

Cards. All kinds. Go to the dollar store. Get a few different decks of regular cards. A deck of uno cards. Maybe some go fish sets. Can you find some of those memory games for cheap? Puzzle books, crosswords, sudoko. Dot to dot and the search ones. Also maybe some checkers? The dollar store might have them.

And a few snacks. I am thinking some popcorn and a few candy bars. You know, for fillers.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

We have Sorry. All the kids love it. We also have Fact or Crap. The kids love that too. They hate Trouble. We used to have this one where you put the little sticks in and filled it with these little marbles or something. Then you pulled out a stick and the last one to pull out the stick before the stuff fell won. They kids loved that. They love Operation. And Candyland and Chutes and Ladders and Memory when they were younger. They like Jenga. We have Twister and never play it.

I loved Trouble. And Headache. I think we still have Trouble.
What about games like Parcheesi or Trivia pursuit?
Other board games?

Try to stay away from the basics. Most people have those. For card games - do Phase 10 and Monopoly Deal. I've played both, they are fun. You can do Farkle. I like Shut the box. Apples to Apples is always a favorite. A cribbage board and cards. Do a card game book and regular cards in fun themes. Chinese checkers.

Oh yeah! Good idea. You could probably find stickers that say First Place or Winner or Good Job.

If this is for families, I would suggest looking for:
1) Card Games - like LL said, go with some newer classics like Phase 10 or Apples to Apples. HOWEVER, many people don't know about the really OLD classics like Old Maid or Go Fish. A version of one of those games for families with young kids will go over really well.
2) Travel Version of Board Games if that does not break your bank. I say this because travel games have have edges to keep the pieces in place and a more solid case for storage.
3) Bananagrams is a good game too. You can play anywhere, it is easily packed into a suitcase.
4) I would NOT include prizes. Honestly, family game nights are not about who wins, but playing with the family. And to have some sort of goal other than fun, you can turn a fun activity into a fit when the little one cannot win again.
5) You can do oily snacks, but include fun napkins. That will help liven up the basket.

I too think you should stay away from the old stand by's since most people have them. Definitely a few decks of cards are a must. Another game which is great, but only a 2 person game, is Mancala; it's a game that dates back to ancient times. Also, if you do popcorn, make it fun, get one of those containers that are decorated to look like an old time box of popcorn, red and white striped. Or big hard pretzels and a fun jar of specialty mustard to go with. How about a note pad and fun pencil for score keeping?

Beat the Parents - comes in Board game or card game
You could also do some licensed versions of Classics that are new. Like Frozen is so popular right now and they do an "Olaf" Trouble game. The Despicable Me Operation game is a minion - everybody loves minions. Classic memory is licensed like crazy - My Little Pony, Despicable Me, Frozen, Mickey Mouse, etc.
