Last night I went to a coworker's bbq he had at his house. He didn't request that anyone bring anything so I didn't, but when I got there, there was a big jar on the counter full of dollar bills, apparently he expected people to bring cash to pitch in to fund his bbq.
I thought it was really tacky, not to mention I had no cash on me so I felt like an idiot. Is that what people do now? I've never seen it before.

I will say that our GF hosts our girls get togethers at her camp in the woods. It is a beautiful place and very scenic. And, she does buy the meat and everyone brings side dishes and of course wine, alcohol, etc. But, we all leave her money for the costs of the food she is incurring because meat in expensive. And, we all love the place and having our parties there so we do make sure that it does not become a burden for her that way. And, we usually sleep over, so we all will vacuum and clean up and leave everything in good condition.
I think I would have suddenly remembered I had left the fridge door open or the cat running and left.
That is tacky.

That's a little different because 1) you guys are all besties and 2) she hosts on a regular basis

I've never heard of that. Usually it's the social norm here for the guest to ask the host if they want you to bring something. Usually the host will say no, or sometimes a side dish. Then the guest will usually ask the host if they want them to bring something in particular. Then the host may say something like salad or potato salad or beans or etc... But I've never heard of cash. Even when not asked we usually bring something. Our women's group meets once a month and we all just bring something. Sometimes I bake and sometimes I pick up something. We're meeting Tuesday and they've asked me to make banana bread. So that's what I'll bring.

And I will try to call on my way to ask if they need something, I know there is always something I forget, ice or rolls or something.

Yeah, if they say they don't need anything we'll usually offer to bring cups or ice or something. Something a lot of people forget.

Could be your friend is holding over the ideals from college. But what ever the case, he should be clued in to his tackiness or if he is like this all the time, time for a new friend!

That's exactly what I thought. Time to grow up and class up!
