Hope chests? Does anyone have one? My mom had one. I think they're so neat. I'm toying with the idea of buying DN one.

I have one at my mom's. It was in my room when I was small. She put my favorite sweater in it from when I was little (I remember wearing it) and we both forgot all about it when the girls were small. Lol. I only have a few items in mine, mostly they are things of my grandmother's that my mom doesn't want but she knows I do.

I remember them. We had one. It was cedar. I think it was taken back to my mawmaw's house. I haven't thought about that for years.
I have no idea what is in it.

I have an OLD Lane cedar chest. Dates back to the 1940's I believe. I would love to find someone to buy it since it is just sitting in my garage. The cedar lining is about an inch or more thick. They do not make them like that these days.

I would buy it in a heartbeat. Have no way of getting it though!
My mom had one. It sat in our family room. We had two living areas. A formal living room and a casual family room. We used to go through that hope chest whenever we got the chance. My mom kept all kinds of old pictures in it, every report card from every kid, and bunches of our drawings and artwork. There was so much stuff that thing. We'd go through it and look at all the pictures and try to figure out who everyone was.

We have 3. My "coffee table" is a hope chest my great grandfather made for my grandmother before she was born. We also have both of Gs grandmother's hope chests. All cedar lined. We use all of them. The history in those chests is invaluable...

I'm seriously considering this for DN. I'm not sure she'll see the value of it. Right now.

I got one at my wedding shower. I still have it today and it holds extra blankets. I was told it was a hope chest because it held your hopes and dreams of marriage. My grandmother was sure every girl needed one. I miss her so.

My mom said when she was young people would buy good linens, silver, etc for when the girl got married. Kind of like a dowry. Seemed kind of silly to me. Why waste all that money when tastes will change?
I like your idea better.

Yes, that is what it means. Basically, way back when, it was a place for a girl to collect things she'd need for marriage.

This is what it was originally for. But back then I don't think there was the massive choices we have today.

I have two. One was my Moms and it an antique. She can't remember when or where she got it. One was free from a yard sale. It was the end of the day and someone did not want to keep it. That one is a newer one.
PSA: would like to warn everyone that hope chests constructed more than maybe 5 years ago have locks that cannot be unlocked from the inside. A child in the Boston area died during an innocent game of hide and seek when they hid in the trunk, no one found the child and the kids playing the game got distracted and went on to something else. the father found the child a few hours later. Very heartbreaking. Lane will even remove the lock for you I believe.
You can remove the locks on the old chests easily with a chisel. Suggest you do that if you have little ones around.

I have three. The old hope chest my grandfather refinished for me (it was his mothers), just before I got married. The one he hand built for me for our 10 wedding anniversary and the one I bought from him that he had made and was going to sell. Priceless treasures indeed. They are filled with pictures, hand made gifts from long past family members and the kids childhood. The rule in our house is, if there's a fire, the trunks and chests go out first, then he can come and get me out. Those three chests are the only thing I would want saved if our house burned or was hit by a tornado. Both our DD's have their own, given to them by their uncle. A wonderfully treasured gift. IMHO, if you can afford to give one, do it. The memories stored inside are what is priceless.

I have my mother's Hope Chest. It is blonde wood, cedar lining, really not my taste. It's in the basement. I should take a look and see what inside. Probably my mother's wedding dress I wore at my first wedding. I do know that before our basement was renovated we had mice down there. They made nests in the unlocked drawer in the bottom. Yuck.
I have another one Mr. FNW inherited which is over 100 years old. It is not lined, but is a beautiful dark stained wood. It's old, so it's not really a "hope" chest as much as it is just a chest. I keep the boys' clothes I can't part with, like their christening gowns, homemade sweaters, etc.
