Here's a pretty terrible story: Dozens of states are actually making it harder for people to vote. And of course, those people just happen to be young, poor, and people of color. And it goes way beyond asking for ID at the polls. The more she explains how they're doing it, the madder it makes me.

FACT CHECK TIME: Two clarifications are necessary here.
#2: The video claims that African-American voters are 26 times more likely to vote early. That's based on the results of a small study of one county in Ohio. It's true that African-Americans in the study were 26 times more likely to vote early in person. White voters were more likely to vote early by mail.
Dena Takruri Democracy works best when its voting system is free, fair, and accessible to all eligible voters, right? The voter participation in this year's midterm elections might not be as easy as it should be. Here are three voting laws that might keep some Americans from the polls. More states than ever are now requiring voters to show a form of photo ID when casting their ballots. So, what’s the big deal? Well, more than one in ten US citizens don't actually have one. This includes 25% of African Americans, 20% of 18 to 29 year olds, and low income voters, groups that traditionally vote Democratic.
Supporters of voter DI laws say that they prevent voter fraud, except that voter fraud is extremely rare. Between 2000 and 2014, there were 31 incidents of voter fraud out of one billion ballots cast. And don't mess with Texas, because the Supreme Court recently sided with the state’s lawmakers to enact voter ID laws in this midterm election. Texans now have to present one of seven eligible IDs in order to cast their vote and while a gun permit is considered an official ID, a university ID is not. Texas isn't alone. A total of 31 states require IDs at the polls this year.
Early voting is already underway, except that in some states, it's not all that easy. Voting early allows a person to cast a ballot on a day and time that doesn't get in the way of things like work or child care but in states like Wisconsin, politicians are fighting to reduce or even eliminate early voting. The states Republican Governor Scott Walker recently cut weekend voting, and night time voting. Backers of Walkers bill say that rural counties don't need weekend voting, so why should city folks be able to vote early when they can't? But here's something they don't mention. Voters in Wisconsin biggest cities, Milwaukee, and Madison, are disproportionately people of color. Governor Walker is also in a tight gubernatorial race where the outcome will largely be determined by how many people come out to vote. Just to put early voting in perspective, in the 2012 presidential election, one third of voters cast a ballot before election day. Oh, and African Americans are 26 times more likely to vote early.
Then there's same day registration, something offered in a small number of states that allows folks to register and vote on the same day. Not only is it super convenient for people that have moved around a lot, most commonly low income folks and young adults, it's also increased voter turnout, particularly among people of color. Is it any surprise, then, that some states have ended same day registration? Take North Carolina, for example, one of the most important battle ground states in the country. During the 2008 presidential election, 36% of same day registration voters were African American, even though they represented 20% of eligible voters. Obama won the state by a small margin. Now, with a close Senate race whose outcome could determine which party controls the senate as a whole, it seems every vote in North Carolina will count.
Those are just a few examples of how voter restriction laws are playing out across the country. Is American democracy at its best if some voters can’t even cast their ballot?

You have to have a valid id to sign up for medicare, get food stamps, and housing allowance. Cash a government check. Who is being disenfranchised here? These people have IDs. They just don't want to show them...

Irrelevant. It costs $15 to get a driver's license. Don't buy the big screen TV and satellite package that all those losers have if you can't afford the $15.

Ed, if you have no licensee, you get a local ID. If you rent, you have a lease that states your address and name. If you own, even if just bought in the past 30 days, you have mortgage papers that establish address and name, if you paid cash for that property you have a deed or other bills such as water and sewer.

Where I live you can't do anything without ID of some form. I don't get the big issue. Like husker says if you're such an incompetent buffoon who can't get one you probably shouldn't vote. Oh, and like SB said, here you just call your local place and they'll come pick you up and take you to get one for FREE FREE FREE! So no excuses.

I had to show my voter ID card and my DL. How hard is that? I still don't get the big deal.

Well, as you know I do not live in the US. But I still have an ID and carry it with me all the time. Cannot imagine anyone who does not have an ID, whether it is carried with them or not is another matter.

You have to show a Birth Certificate for your 5 yr old to play soccer. This is just more Dem BullSchit to make voter fraud easier of which they are so good at magically finding boxes of votes in the trunk of Al Franken's car.
The Left will do anything to win, including voter fraud. So, they do not want any reasonable measures in place that make it harder for them to cheat. Anyone who can't see otherwise is on board with cheating.
one credible instance of voter fraud since 2000 ? Please.....
to vote in this country, the constitution requires that you be an american citizen--end of story--if you can't provide proof, via some sort of license / gov't issued id, you don't vote--easy

Of course it is easy. But when it doesn't align with the underlying agenda, then invent a lot of baloney that makes it sound like brain surgery.

Are you kidding, Ed? I looked on the DMV website and the most someone would have to pay for a non-driver ID car is $14, but often it's less than that, depending on age, etc.
And every black person I know has an ID and eats every day. Your comment is insulting to black people.

And the poor black people who can't eat? Yeah. You need an ID to get WIC, Food stamps, Medicaid, and section eight housing. So that doesn't float either.

Articles I've read say the biggest challenge is for indigent people in rural America, where there is no public transportation, and no reasonable way to get to the DMV or other place to get an ID card, without taking a full day off of work or taking a day off of taking care of their animals.
I don't know how prevalent that is. (Maybe Husker could shed some light.) I'm sure it exists. And those people would have to have a mailing address so they could get absentee ballots.

This is all very 'nice" ed, but the id is not to verify address, just that the name and ID # matches the registration, not the address. NEXT!
actually, when i voted on Tuesday, i had to present my picture ID, give them my full name, and recite my address. the address that i gave had to match the address on my ID and the information on the computer.

ed, the point is, if those indigent people are getting any kind of government assistance at all, they have to present IDs to receive said assistance. if they're renting someplace, they have to have provided ID.
“You may shoot me with your words, you may cut me with your eyes, you may kill me with your hatefulness, but still, like air, I'll rise!” ― Maya Angelou
seriously, do those people who are decrying this not understanding the point? don't give me that crap about how people on public assistance can't afford government ID's so they can't vote if they are required to present ID before voting. if they're on public assistance, they have ID's. they have that so they can receive public assistance. and so they can open a bank account. and so they can get a cell phone, or internet, or utilities. i've had to provide ID for all of these things.
frankly, it irritates the crap out of me that it's so horrible to require voters to present ID. does it occur to no one that requiring ID is in place to ensure that those who are voting are entitled to vote in this country? as in, actual US citizens? do you, who decry requiring ID's, want people who are not citizens of this country, and who are not entitled to vote, to be voting in our elections?
They don't mind if they vote as long as they vote for their side.
Seriously, I don't know where you live or under what rock but I personally don't know anyone without an ID. Even people around here who don't drive are instructed to get a state ID. You have to have one to open a bank account, cash a check, or pretty much get any form. I very much understand that people exist without drivers licenses for a variety of reasons. I understand that. But you still need some form of ID to do anything these days. Not buying this constant barrage of "this is only so the Republicans can keep the poor people from voting" crap.

Even if it is true, so flipping what? Boo hoo. Getting anything done is a pain in the ass for everybody. I have to take time off whenever I need to do things like renew my license, etc. It's part of being a citizen - do it and shut up the bitching and moaning about it. And guess what - your ID is more important than your cell phone, your cable, your designer bags, etc. So, unless you are homeless and on the streets and had all your information stolen - you do not get ANY sympathy for not having an ID in this day and age.
