I'm sort of at a crossroads with my work situation. My current job is really boring and the pay isn't super great, BUT it's good job security, benefits and I get every holiday paid plus a week paid off at Christmas. So a lot of perks there.
My other option is to work at my old workplace but as a contractor, so I would get at least an $8 pay raise, a much more fun job and better job experience. Cons are, no benefits, no perks, no job security.
I don't know what to do! Completely opposite situations!

Vette, I know the sugar daddy comment was in jist, but please don't make it real. In your experience? Expect to move to Ok City for a job. Boeing is moving all its AWACS maintenance to Ok City. As they will for all other maintenance for other platforms, know that and know Seattle is about to go through a depression.
Suggest you seek other areas of work where you experience fits or move. To Ok City.

Why can't your old place hire u full time?? Make them a proposal.
They probably would but I wouldn't get the amazing pay like I would if I was contracting. So that's basically the only reason I'm thinking of contracting is for the money.

I have been an employee , subcontracted and owned my own business. Do not underestimate the value and cost of benefits. 8/hr more would barely cover that. And then they can easily cut your hours at will. Go back , explain your value and negotiate a raise.

Hm, see that's the kind of stuff I just don't know enough about. Thanks!

You have to figure that company-paid healthcare alone is worth about $800 to $1100 per month. Plus social Security, workman's comp, disability, 401K or other retirement plan if they contribute.

I would not sacrifice benefits for better pay, unless it was really good. Maybe double my current wage.
And knowing your job is safe is a huge comfort you wont miss until it is gone. A lack of job security would make me hesitant to go to the more fun job.

Yep, as a contractor you will have to pay the whole SS tax 15.25% of your earnings. you will have to pay for your own insurance, you won't have sick or vacation time or 401K. $8 more an hour is not worth all that. Plus if you get laid off you would qualify for unemployment benefits.
