It's supposed to be cold and rainy all day. DS announced we're out of milk so I guess I'm going to have to go out in the cold to get some. Blah.

At 10:30 I heard a little knock at the door. I told my husband and he said "I'm not answering the door at this time of night"
I put my ear up to the door and heard crying. I answered it in a panic.
It was the little neighbor girl saying she couldn't find her mom anywhere. I went over there and sure enough, nobody was home. I turned on some cartoons and made her a place to rest on the couch. Then, 30 minutes later I saw her parents pulling in to the driveway. I went over there and knocked on the door. They said they were downstairs the whole time.
Hmm... I guess we will see if this happens again. That was weird behavior.

That little girl is lucky she has a kind neighbor like you. Sounds weird to me too. I hope if the parents were gone, that this little incident will prevent them from doing that again.

Empy, that was weird. Just for future reference, maybe you should jot down what happened. If it happens again then you will have a record of it and that would make it easier to relate the information to another if need be.
SB, glad youa re having a better hair day.
NJN, it is feast or famine around here when it comes to milk. I feel your pain.

That is so weird. You SAW them pull in and they needed to lie? Maybe keep an eye on that ....

Part of me thinks you should have waited a bit and let her parents panic a little.

Its called 'Stickboy'. Its about a kid who gets bullied and then turn into the bully, and about his inner life during the process. Perfect for some of my clients.

Thanks Blankie :)
Not to sound creepy, but I could see them through their windows, they don't have any window coverings and all of their lights were on. I watched them enter the kitchen and start making food. The little girl is 4 and she was so terrified that I wanted to reunite her as fast as possible so she could get some sleep. It was late for her.
She was completely shaken. My husband wanted to call the cops but I would never do that unless I was sure I needed to. If this happens again I will treat it differently.
When I went to the door, the mom answered and was ultra surprised to see her daughter. She said that they were downstairs and L just didn't know that, the dad said this is the 2nd time she has done this.
They had no idea that I knew they were gone. I didn't press the issue as I am sure L will tell them all of the effort we made to locate them, it is beyond obvious they weren't downstairs aside from the fact that I watched them come home. So they will know that I know.
They also have a 2 year old that slept through the whole ordeal.

They left a 2 & 4yo alone? That is insane. I wonder where they went because they obviously didn't eat while they were out if they came home & immediately started fixing food. Hopefully it will scare some sense into them now that the little girl alerted you & they will know you know.
I would have called. They'll just keep doing this.

With the information I have now, that may have been the answer. I didn't know she had done this before and I didn't know the parents were going to be dumb about it. We were downstairs? Um.. sounds good!
I had nothing to go on when she first came to get help. I thought maybe the dad ran out of gas just down the street and the mom went to pick him up and didnt want to wake the babies. Or maybe they ran to another neighbors house to help with something major? Or maybe they just rolled the trash cans down to the end of the drive together? Or maybe they were fighting so they went into the car in the garage and L didn't know that?
My last instinct is to ever involve the law if I can help it.

Oh, I totally understand your reluctance to call.
I just worry about one of the kids getting hurt when they're gone. Or what if you're not home?

I wouldn't have involved the police either with no information to go on. I would have assumed it was something like you described. It would not have crossed my mind that they left the kids home alone for an extended period of time & then would lie about it.
They are fairly new to the neighborhood. They moved here in August. We have talked to them a couple of times for an hour or so. So we know them a little. Definitely enough to make a perception of who they are.
The dad is kind of a spoiled kid from California. He just finished college and daddy gave him some money to start a business. He isn't home all of the time. The mom is young and pretty and seems to enjoy her life staying home with the kids. She's not flaky and uncaring the way some are. She is constantly involved and engaging them. All of the neighborhood kids are very comfortable with me so I assume Lila didn't wait long to come get me. She has come over here lots of times to play with all of the other kids who gather here in summer.
It seems so out of character! I'm going to react differently next time though, based on the fact that the mom said they were downstairs and the dad said L has done this before..
I was hoping for "Oh gosh, hubby ran out of gas and I had to run and get him, I didn't think L would wake up"
I would totally understand that. It was something stupid, otherwise she wouldn't lie and say they were actually just downstairs.

They were gone! For half an hour at least. I had her for half an hour and I'm sure she didn't wake up the second they left.
What could possibly be THAT important?

Maybe it was the only time they had to vote. After the kids were in bed so they didn't have to take them to the polls. I'm reaching I know. They could have gone one at a time earlier.

I don't know! I keep mulling it over in my mind. I think it's just because of how scared the little girl was. I felt so bad! I hope they never mess up like that again. Little kids aren't little forever.. Keep it together until they are snotty teenagers! It's the least you can do ;)

You can take kids to the polling stations, plus they were closed.

My cleaning lady threw away my sliver of soap in my shower when she cleaned yesterday. I did not know until I went to soap up. So I had to get out of the shower dripping wet with conditioner in my hair & root around under the sink for a new bar. I am apparently a hoarder of bathroom products. Aside from the dozen rolls of TP there were 4 boxes of Kleenex, 3 packs of Dixie cups, two big boxes of q-tips & other miscellaneous stuff to sort through all while dripping a puddle on the floor. Not the most relaxing shower this morning.
I just ordered some super cute glass baby bottles for Marla. hare to believe I will have my own tiny human in a month.
Be super super careful with these. I can't tell you how many little ones I have seen pick the bottle up for the first time and throw it on the floor. The crash and breakingof glass is impressive, and the glass smashes into smithereens.
In my 4 years working at Target, I probably cleaned one up every few weeks. And usually it was breatmilk, so I had to treat it as a bodily fluid...full on protective equip and blocking of the aisles until it was cleaned up. It was a blast. Not.
Anyway, just be super careful. Just when you let your guard down, Marla will grab one and chuck it! How you would clean up that kind of mess with a baby to hold, I am just not sure.

You are such a good person. Thank you for helping that poor baby girl out.
Figured I would thank you since I doubt her parents did. Jerks.

The bottles I bought come with a silicone sleeve. I know that doesn't make it break proof but it shouldnt break as easy. I've read that even after cleaning plastic ones tend to stain and stink After awhile. I only bought four to try out. I've read not all babies like all bottles.
Empy, those parents are weird. Very strange. People have given you very good advice!
We are now going on 24 hours with no break in the rain. It's also supposed to only be 56 here today so it's not that nice out. I'm hoping the rain will stop long enough for me to run to down the street and get milk.
And yes Lily, why is that with the milk? We will have a gallon sit long it goes bad and then we buy one and seems to be gone the next day.

That poor girl Empy. I know my daughter would be freaked if she woke up and we weren't there. They are lucky she didn't call the police. I think DD would have if that happened to her.
