Whether you're a parent or not, protecting children is just about the biggest priority in society. How can we protect them from predators, and how do we talk to them about it without traumatizing them? It's so incredibly crucial but equally as awkward. Here's what to say and how to say it. Or you can let this video do the talking for you.
It's my safety shield. I had to learn the safety lesson, and take the safety quiz to get it.
Can we get one?
This is Miss P. She gave me this.
Can we have one too?
Yes. You could have yours if you learn the safety lesson and take the safety quiz. You ready?
Yes!
The safety shield keeps you safe from bad people. How do you think you could figure if someone's bad?
Oh, bad people have big teeth.
No, my dear.
Oh, they have big red eyes.
No, no, no.
They have large hands and an evil smile.
Bad people might not look bad. They look like everybody else does. They can be nice looking, nice smelling and cool too. They might even have a stash of yummy candies in their pockets.
Oh, that's so confusing. How do I know if someone is bad?
That's what the safety lesson will teach you. It teaches you to keep your body safe.
I take a bath everyday. That keeps my body safe.
No, my dear. Cleaning the body is different from keeping your body safe.
Then?
Let's look at the human body.
This is a human body. These are private parts. For a boy, his genitals and his bottom are private parts. For a girl, her breasts, genitals and her bottom are private parts. They are called private parts because they shouldn't be shown in public. Even now when we are swimming and most of our clothes are off, we are still covering our private parts. If someone sees your private parts, or makes you see someone else's private parts, it's called see alert.
If someone talks about private parts, it's called talk alert. If someone touches your private parts, or asks you to touch their private parts, it's called touch alert. No one is allowed to see private parts, talk about private parts, or touch private parts. Only mom and dad can do that when they have to wash you, or if you are hurt in your private parts.
But my nanny bathes me everyday. Is that okay?
It's okay if your mom or dad says it's okay. So ask your parents to make you a list of caregivers that can see, talk about or touch your private parts. Again, they can do this only if they have to wash you, or if you are hurt in your private parts.
Okay. Now I understand.
Bad people could harm you only if you are alone with them. Remember never to accept goodies from strangers especially when your parents aren't around. Being alone with a stranger is alone alert. If you find yourself in such a situation, move to a place that has more people around. You should not allow anyone to hug, carry or kiss you. If someone hugs, carries or kisses you, it's hold alert.
I love my Aunt Kate and we hug and kiss. Is that hold-alert?
That's a very good question, my dear. Of course she can love you and hug you, if she's in your circle of love. You should make your circle of love with your parents. Your circle of love will have people who could hold and love you. Remember that your circle of love is different from your caretaker list.
Aaaah, now I get it.
Now that you've learnt the safety lesson, are you ready for the safety quiz?
Yes!
Now look here. You have to tell me if what's happening is okay, or if there're any alerts. Is it okay if the doctor has to check a child's private parts when her mom is at the side?
It's okay.
Is it okay if a man touches a girl's breasts? No. It's touch alert.
Is it okay if a caretaker helps a boy wear his clothes?
It's okay.
Is it okay if a man takes off his clothes before a girl?
No, it's see alert.
Is it okay if a woman says, "Nice breasts." To a girl?
No, it's talk alert.
Is it okay if a woman takes a girl playing with friends to a lonely street?
No, it's alone alert.
Is it okay if a teacher calls a group of children to get inside a classroom?
It's okay.
Is it okay if a woman shows a picture of a naked woman to a boy?
No, it's see alert.
Is it okay if a man hugs and kisses a child?
No, it's hold alert.
Is it okay if an uncle hugs his niece?
It's okay.
But only if he is her circle of love. Otherwise, it's hold alert.
Very good.
Why would someone carry me when I don't like it?
There're people who are sick and weak in the mind. They like to harm others. The truth is, they're really scared. If you don't like the way anyone touches you, you must say, "No.". It's your body and you should take care of yourself, and there is no need to be scared.
What should I do if someone is doing this to me?
It's never late to say, "No." Even if someone has done anything bad with you, or is doing something bad with you, you can start saying, no Even now. You must be brave and tell your mom, dad or someone that you're comfortable with. By talking about it, you will also be helping other children to be safe from that bad person.
Now that you all know what is okay and what is wrong, what are the five alerts that you must remember at all times?
See alert, talk alert, touch alert, alone alert and hold alert.
Excellent. You have all earned your own safety shields. Have you earned yours?

I found it to be extremely wordy and overkill. It's WAY too much for one conversation. And "circle of love" ?! Please. It's a bit ridiculous.
I am not saying these lessons shouldn't be taught. They absolutely should. But we don't need to make it so complicated. "Your circle of love is different than your caretaker list". Holy heck.
Keep it simple.

Our school does s safe touch program. Nobody should touch the parts of your body covered by a swim suit. Those are your private parts. However it is Ok for mom to help give u a bath or if your doctor examines you. Hygiene reasons are ok. But otherwise no. That was pretty easy for my kids to grasp.
I don't think conversations like this can be scripted. As soon as you deliver the first line, your kid isn't going to follow along and ask the first question! Lol. They don't know the script. And if they don't feel like talking, you need to set it aside. The article would better serve parent by telling them when and how to introduce these topics casually in day to day situations.
While bathing a child, go over the "parts of your bathing suit" conversation. When you are walking in a shopping mall, talk about not leaving a parent's side because everyone isn't a good person, and some people will want to hurt them. Etc.
I don't want my kid trying to figure out if someone is in the "circle of love" or on their "caretaker list". Sheesh. Too complicated for no reason.

We sang about the circle of love when I was in Girl Scouts when I was about eight. Who knew?

Vette, stranger danger used to teach kids that strangers were all scary looking people. We know that's not true.

You can't follow these scripts. Kids ask questions and maybe only want one answer. You don't read the whole dictionary when they ask what one word means. And really, there is such a thing as too much information.

What's wrong with stranger danger? That's how we taught our foster daughter. It's easy for kids to remember.
Because sometimes (actually most of the time) the most dangerous people are not strangers. Kids need to recognize bad actions, not bad people (because bad people usually look good).

And actually, statistically speaking, the majority of kids are molested, abused, or kidnapped by someone very close to them. Strangers RARELY do the same. Uncles, cousins, coaches are all usually the ones that molest. Well, more often than the usual middle of the day strange man in a white van scenario. In fact, stranger abductions are extremely rare. If a child is kidnapped they usually look to the estranged parent first. Then other family members. Most abductors live less than five miles from a child's home. Or at least these were the stats last time I checked.

No! Stop! You cant touch me there! This is my NO NO square!
Teaching a kid how to be safe is a life long project. It doesn't wait till they can talk and it doesn't stop with one conversation.
Teaching a kid to trust their instincts is good. Teaching a kid to trust their instincts and still understand that mom and dad is not going to instruct them to do something that will hurt them is a great thing.
People want to be way too wordy these days.
Be the example for your child. Every day is a time to learn something new and they don't even have to know they are learning it.

Okay that song is just weird. Whoever wrote that sounds a bit off. My puppies were even howling.

I didn't even know it was a real thing. I thought it was a joke or something.
My kids would have just rolled their eyes and I would have gotten the "moooom" from them.

So I played this for DN and she asked what five year old knows what a "purity plan" is.
