Has anyone seen this show? I've watched and it gave me a great idea for what to do when I retire. I'll sell my big house and get two tiny houses. One here (RI) for the summer and one in TX near my daughter and grandkids for winter. I own some land here and my son in law will give over an acre of land to me if I decide to do it.

I have seen it. I think they are awesome. I'd like to have a couple scattered around too.

Some of them are really awesome. I really won't need anything bigger than that. Easy to clean and the heating bill would be minuscule. It would also be nice to visit both places without much fuss.

Yeah. And you wouldn't even need to pack anything. Just get in the car and go.

I have seen those that you can take with you too.

Do you think you could live in one though? I've lived in small places most of my life so I think it would be fun.

I would go nuts! I can't even stand small hotel rooms. DH and I talked about downsizing until we realized the downsized house would be even larger than what we have now.

Some of them actually have lots of storage. I don't think I could do less than 750 square feet. I do need room for my all sneakers after all...lol

When I lived in military housing our place was about 750 sq. feet. It was 2 bedrooms and one bathroom. The only bad part was there really wasn't a dining area. The closets were pretty small but we didn't have a lot back then.

this.  the hubs and i "downsized" from the 2200 on two levels square foot house where we finished raising our kids to a 3500 square foot on one level house.  and we use the whole thing.  plus we have a full basement, which we never had before.  it works great for having the grandbabies here...plenty of room for them to play.

Yeah I probably could. As long as the space was large enough to have an ADA bathroom and kitchen.

I couldn't do a loft bed so that would make mine a bit bigger.

It's weird. I thought my husband would think it was crazy but he really started researching it. I could never afford two houses otherwise and it makes a lot of what I dreamed retirement would be obtainable.

The main problem with tiny houses are zoning requirements.

I saw one where the queen size bed pulled out from under the office floor. You'd have to make the bed before you could slide it back in but I do that anyway. I wouldn't like to climb down from a loft if I had to pee. I think an ADA bathroom is possible. They are all built to order right now.

Our place on the lake isn't much bigger. We spend weeks there at a time. We could definitely make it happen. In fact, I hope we retire there. Its paid for has heat and air and water. We love it....

I could own 4 tiny houses for what I have now. I would only think about 2. Plus having land to build on without spending more is very attractive as I get older.

I could do with a regular twin bed. Maybe a daybed that could pull double duty.

I swear some of these houses are nicer than a lot of places I lived when I was younger.

Shouldn't be dream tiny? LOL!!!

Really I have thought about it. I have looked at small house floor plans. I could live in a small place. Especially if I had a nice outdoor living area.

I would want my rooms to be separate though. I lived in a single wide for a while I really hate sitting in the living room and seeing the kitchen. I never felt like I was ever done.

I know you have three kids but once they have lives of their own you could have space big enough for you and some grandbabies spending the night in the future...If you want them too...lol

I actually found a floor plan that I liked one time. It was very basic.

Living room. Bedroom on either side. Then a dinning area and then the kitchen. A laundry area and half bath.

There was a full bath off the living room connected to one of the bedrooms.

But it had a porch all the way around it and you could access it from every room.

That would make the whole thing feel bigger.

i love the look of the tiny houses, but physically, i cannot live in one. i replied above that we downsized to actually a larger house. but everything is on one floor in our house. the garage is down two steps, which can be easily accessed by a ramp. my laundry room is no longer on the bottom floor of the house. the halls and doors are wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair. and there are no stairs that we absolutely need to use. when we can no longer manage the basement stairs, that staircase is wide enough to accommodate one of those chair lift things. at 60, these are issues that we need to face, and accept.

On one hand I could totally live in a two room place.

On the other I would love to have a huge house for everyone to gather at for holidays and, well, just a place for all the gatherings.

Lily, i think it's a lovely sentiment to say that one could live in a two room place.  but really?  you could live, sleep, cook, eat, bathe, and do laundry in a two room place?  i'm not saying it can't be done, but i'd love to see the two-room place where one could do all of the above.

the hubs and i lived in a two room apartment the first year that we were married.  it was...cramped to say the least.

Well I will probably be kid less in another 5 years.

I figure a living/kitchen area, a bedroom and a bath will be enough.

If I had a small place, I wouldn't have the space to accumulate things. I am very good at purging.

And if it had a place where I could be outside then that is another living area to me.

My room growing up was 6 foot wide and 9 foot long. It was perfect. I loved my little room.

So yes. I really think I could live in a 2 room place.

If it was just me, maybe. I need my space away from DH. Much as I love him.
