About the privacy that has been taken from our kids.
Now I don't know about all schools but I know here that when I was a kid, you bought a meal ticket that had you name on it. It was punched at lunch, Breakfast if you got breakfast. Your parents paid for it a week in advance. And you could get it by the day.
When the kids started school they used their SS number. The last four digits. I don't remember even having a SS number till I was an adult, I had no reason to have it. I had one but I didn't need it. But everyday at lunch that is how the accounts were kept.
Now the kids use their fingerprint.
So in another, what, 30 years, everyone who has been through our school system will have their SS number and figure print in a government data base.
If others are doing this. It will be the whole US.
How do you feel about that? I am not sure how I feel about it. Harmless or not?

My kids got a school ID number. It was not their SS number. They got an ID card at the beginning of the year with a bar code on the back. This card did everything from check out books to get your lunch. They used that number to sign onto the school web site and check their grades, get homework assignments, or other things. They did need to type in a PIN number when they logged onto the computer site but it was one of their choosing.

Lily, you didn't have an SS number until later because the law was you didn't need one until you wanted a job. Today, and for the past 30 years, kids are applied for one when they are born.
No school system should be using any part of the SS number as ID, especially the last four numbers, those are the crucial ones.

And my kids used theirs for about 3-4 years and then they went to a school ID.
But now it is a finger print scanner.
Each time they purchase something, they put their finger on a scanner.
Is our school system the only ones doing this?

I would have a fit if my kids school scanned their fingerprint.

Agree with Husker on the social security number completely. I am wondering why no one spoke up against using fingerprints. There must be more than one parent who disagrees with this. No reason to follow the school board rulings (if that is what this is) blindly. Speak up. That is one of the great things about the US. You have the right, no the duty, to speak up when you think something is out of line.
It isn't exactly a finger print. It's a biometric scanner. We use them at work. It only takes readings off certain points. It could never be used to identify a criminal.
I know the SS number comes from the government. I was using it as an example of what schools are doing. It was a stepping stone.

But it is a record of the finger. And it is being used to identify.
So how short of a step is it?

It would only work for that program. It can't be used anywhere else. There was a huge stink when we went to this system. The company gave us a bunch of literature on it.

OK. I get that.
But the system can be bought by anyone.
And if the school system has them. The school is public and part of the government. So the government has it.

I am not arguing. I am just saying. It stands to reason that they would have the ability to identify a child because they are using it to identify a child.

Well, I think the Information Train has left the station. And, it is very easy for govt to track and know our whereabouts 24/7. It is what it is. I have to get fingerprinted for my job. I accept that it is part of my job. But, having to have all ten fingers not only front surface but rolling side to side and full palm prints is very disconcerting. No, I don't plan to commit any felonies. But, I feel like why should be fingerprinted when I am not a criminal? Or, pee in a cup or any of that stuff. Again, I get that the nature of my job requires that. But, I have a problem with massively instituting that type of thing.
BTW, Lilly, if you are opposed to this, get a group of parents and start attending School Board meetings and voice your concerns.
Well it is part of the program now. By the time I could get anything changed, my kids would be out of school.
Like I said, I don't really know how I feel about it.
And Ed, the public school system is part of the local government. Which ties into the federal government with those wonderful grants. It's a spider web. They are all connected.
I was just thing about it the other night. How the whole thing was being done. Innocently enough.
But it's like the incoming tide. It gets just a little closer with each wave until it is around your neck.

Honestly, it really isn't going to bother the upcoming generation. Their lives are lived out online and publicly and the most intimate details of their lives are shared with everyone. They accept Big Brother as part of their reality.
Our generation held our privacy a bit more sacred, for lack of a better word. Now, they don't even know what it means.
We wake up one morning and we have nothing left.

Well, the beauty of the internet and Smartphones is that it absolutely gives the illusion of privacy. When in reality, every keystroke, text, encoded talking, etc is at the fingertips of the digital gurus. Our phones are our tethering and tracking device. So, it is a reality. It's here. And, it isn't going away. ANd, the reality is that most people have to use technology and in order to do anything you are going to have to put your electronic fingerprint on it. The Amish are probably the only ones who won't but even they are carrying cellphones now.

I don't know about yours, but my employer required all this, in duplicate, for my background investigation in order to obtain my security clearance.

Yes, my employer required this and I understand that. But, I don't necessarily think everyone should be scrutinized to that extent.
Personally, I wish more were. When I worked in the environment where everyone had security clearances, one could leave their purse out without worry. Now I work in an office where only a basic background check is conducted, and we have theft occurrences on a regular basis. I can't even get up and use the bathroom or go to the photocopy room without locking up my personal belongings.

That stinks. I lock up everything at work. One of the ladies that works in the medical records area left her car keys in her desk, it is not a public area, on the 4th floor. Someone went in her office, in her desk, took her keys, and stole her car. Obviously a coworker had to have been involved. I have to use my badge to get into some of our restricted areas but it is just coded to open the door. It doesn't keep track of WHO went through the door.

Speaking of keys.
Have you seen or heard about the key app?
You take 2 pictures of a key, send it to the site and with 6 bucks you get copy of that key in the mail within a few business days.
Of course they have your phone info. But how secure is it really?
So keep your keys in your pocket.

a stranger, taking a picture of your key and getting a copy of it in the mail.

My car key isnt even a physical key. So they would have a heck of a time.
As for the OP, no schools near us do the fingerprint. But it isn't an actual print, so it's a moot point.
The ymca where we used to live did a biometric hand print to get in. It didn't bother me. It wasn't a true handprint. It detected certain markers on your hand as well as how your hand fit into the machine. That was linked to our personal info. As the kids grew, they would have to have theirs rescanned. That part was a pain. DD grew like 6 inches over a summer. We were rescanning her hand ever week or so.

They could have taken a picture of it. Had one made. and you coworker wouldn't have known the car was missing until she went to get in it.
Like I said, there is a trail with the phone, but I am sure if there is a way to get around that, someone will find out how.
Would you like to be sitting in your living room and someone you don't know just unlock your door and walk in?
If your key is missing you will know that and change the locks.
If your key is not missing, you don't know to change your locks.

Someone here had their keys stolen as well, but not their car. On her chain were the keys to her mother's house as well. Another woman had her makeup bag stolen, and part of her lunch. Another woman had her coke stolen from her desk. We had several computers stolen as well over a weekend. From locked offices. It's unbelievable.
We have food stolen from lunch bags all the time. I had half a bottle of coke zero stolen. Had my name on it. And my germs since it was half empty. Hope they enjoy that.
