Most Of The Items In Your Spice Rack Are Probably Expired

Sugar, spice and everything nice is only so nice for a couple of months. Your spice rack may be filled with little bottles of seasoning with the power to enhance any dish on the planet, but the truth is, they can only do this for so long.

Many of us are guilty of keeping those containers of magic dust -- ubiquitous allspice, heat-inducing chili powder and please-add-it-to-everything cinnamon -- in our pantries way past their due dates.

Are you ready for it? According to Karen Page, author of The Flavor Bible (and most recently, The Vegetarian Flavor Bible), spices should be replaced every six to 12 months. When dealing with ground spices, veer on the side of a decreased shelf-life. Whole spices, like cinnamon sticks and peppercorn, will last a little longer.

An expired dash of garlic powder is unlikely to harm you, but it might hurt your dish -- the spice's vigor will be weakened, making your meal less flavorful. Page recommends replacing your spices around November and December, the holiday months where every one and their mother seems to be cooking up something in the kitchen. And if you make it a tradition, you'll remember to swap them out next year. Another tip? Don't buy the super-sized container, unless you really plan to go spice wild. You'll end up having to toss it in a couple of months.

A representative from McCormick suggests ensuring the product is tightly capped and kept away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight (don't store your spices over the stove, dishwasher, sink or near a window). You might also consider refrigerating spices that belong to the red pepper family -- like paprika and chili power. This'll help them retain color and freshness, the McCormick representative told HuffPost in an email.

The more you know. Happy spicing.

Oh I know most of mine have expired. I wish they were sold in tiny bottles. I use mostly basil, mint, or cilantro and I buy those fresh. Rarely do I use any form of garlic than fresh cloves. I do keep garlic powder on hand though. Given all this, why do I have a cupboard full of spice bottles?confuse  Maybe I will toss them today.

I tossed a few the other day. I'm sure that bottle of rubbed sage is probably more than 10 years old. I just can't let go....

Deep cleansing breath! Let it go. Free yourself of the burden of old, outdated spices. You know you cannot carry that kind of baggage with you for the rest of your life. Let your spirit and your palate be unencumbered by yesterday's blandness!

They last longer if you store them in glass bottles in a cool, dark place.

All I need is salt, pepper, paprika, garlic, Italian seasoning, fennel, cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper.... maybe a few others. I grow my own basil, oregano, and rosemary. If I have a good cayenne pepper crop I dry those and have my own crushed pepper as well. Oh and cinnamon, I need cinnamon. And bay leaves. Curry, gotta have that. And cumin. Oh, and white pepper.

I have to have all of those, plus cardomon, coriander, cumin seeds, turmeric (which is really good for you), cloves (ground and whole), nutmeg, and garam masala.

The paprika bottle is empty because I combined two bottles. DD has a paprika obsession and keeps buying it. There were four bottles. See how dusty they are? That's because they were crammed way in the back of the cabinet. And yes, the old sage is gone.

Am I the only one that thinks this is Lawry's or McCormick's way of selling more of their product?

We get smaller containers. My store has a lot in the smaller bottles.

The ones we use a lot we buy the bigger bottles.

But they don't last long enough to expire.

And just because they expire doesn't mean they are bad. They start losing their potency so you may need to add more.

I love fresh herbs and use those when I can.

Every year I get a new thing of sage. It is enough for the Holidays.

If trying a new recipe and new spice, instead of buying a big bottle these make sense to me.
spanish-chicken-mccormick.jpg

they have all different combinations. Even if you are not going to use but one of the spices. it can be more economical than a whole bottle you may throw out latter.

Me too. And I am too lazy to get rid of them. Not that throwing them out is hard, but having to run to the store every time I need a new spice is annoying. I'll just use the less potent ones.

Perhaps, but when your Paprika is dark brown, it is time to toss it.

I cleaned the tupperware cabinet last week. DD usually just empties the dishwasher and flings it in there. It was a mess.

I was cooking at MIL's house. Her spice rack is filled with McCormick tins from the 70's! She doesn't cook much.
I told her the spices were probably bad, but I would take the tins because they are cool.
No kidding, I found the exact same tins for sale in an antique store just a week later!

At Target, in the spice aisle, little tiny spices. They also have them at the reg grocery store, but I know they have them at Target. I will try and post a pic. Hold on.

Not sure why it comes out upside down...but those are the 3 sizes available. The smallest is only about an ounce. Perfect!

There is no way that I am replacing all of my spices. Between blends and individual spices, ground and whole, I have well over 60 bottles, jars, baggies, etc.

My spice rack carousel hold 36 different containers alone (see the right side of the pic on the small table) . That does not count the medium sized drawer full.

Well, once you drink all the wine around your spices, you won't care that they are outdated!  biggrin
