Ok - let's clear the clutter and purge the paranephalia we no longer need!

We'll do weekly purges of specific items.  We encourage before & after photos and full descriptions of your purging endeavors - how many, oldest, nastiest, etc.

To finish out this week, we'll continue with the SPICES which started this idea!

Yay to our geeks that have motivated us.

So far we have several ideas.  I think clothes should come in categories, or it might be overwhelming.  Each item will run Monday - Sunday.  So, spices will conclude this Sunday.  Our next purges will be -

Old Shoes

Mismatched and old pots/pans

Mismatched/missing & old plastics and lids, like Tupperware (although if you have any of the good lids, we may need to talk!)

Cassettes and VHS (it's the 21st century people)

Old and odd underwear and socks

Cosmetics/toiletries

Expired paint and old cleaning products

Paperwork (this is a biggie - might need 2 weeks!)

Old computers and accessories

Books

Old home decor you should NOT ever be tempted to reuse (geese are included in this)

Kitchen utensils

Pantry items

Freezer/Refrigerator

Craft ideas started, never finished/purchased, never started/never going to finish

Medicine cabinet

Linen closet

Coat/shoe closet

Yard & landscaping stuff

I will take new ideas to add to the list.  Please put ideas in this thread!

I will need a lot of encouragement when it comes to the books.

I've been slowly doing a mass purge at my house as well. I don't have anything specific to add to the list though. I like to do a purge one room at a time. I think it would drive me nuts to do a part here, and a part there skipping around to purge a particular item at a time.

ETA- Purge books? That's one thing I can't bring myself to purge.

To purge books is to move them from the shelf/table/nightstand to a box in the basement/garage/attic with the intent of going through them with the idea of someday giving them to a new home.

I think I would need a month for the electronics/old computers and accessories. That takes up half the basement with DH's workshop. He's in IT.

That is not purging - that is relocating.

I got rid of 3 pair recently. Then I bought more. But in my defense they were sandals. They take up less room.

I think clothes, specifically, those sizes we don't wear right now but keeping for that big weight loss should be added to the list! or those that are more than 10 years old.

The only thing I can part with is mismatched tupperware/plastic containers. Every so often we have SS get down there on the floor and empty out the cabinet and sort through everything. He will loudly proclaim that NO ONE can keep up with the containers like he can. We let him be. He does a wonderful job. I will rent him out cheap.

I had a HUGE bag of fabric scraps. Finally took it to Goodwill. DD's friend is a knitter and she keeps giving her her leftover yarn. I need to dispose of those too.

Ok. I did it!

Here is the BEFORE picture of my spice cabinet:

Spoiler

It really wasn't that hard, and it didn't take very long to get it done. I found a lot of duplicates and some that there was so little left I don't know why I didn't throw them out last I used them. I also had some that were very old, and some that I don't recall ever using, so I tossed those.

Here is the grossest things I found:

Here it is all done:

You all have way to much ambition..
NAOW, your spice cupboard looks great now.
I should clean mine out too. Showing a picture of it's current condition would be humiliating (blush).

Okay, so we are currently on spices.

I'm actually good with that. I went through the spice cabinet a few months ago.

All I could purge this time is a very old jar of garlic powder. Gone!

Done!

Ha! Just wait until we get to toiletries, cassettes and craft supplies. That could be U-G-L-Y.  I will need quite a nap after that!

I cleaned out my spice cabinet last week. Only got rid of 7 that were expired. I have way too many. Buy the odd ones when trying out new recipes and then never use them again. Can't bring myself to dump them until they reach their expiration dates. Did get rid of 4 pan lids that I had stored in the warming drawer of the stove. Have two sets of pans and I rarely use the lids. They were from the set my parents gave us for our wedding almost 34 years ago. Looked brand spanking new!

Nice job NAOW!

I just finished a major purge: garage, spare room, front and back entry way. I could get on board with this though, as a way to keep up.

I've been meaning to reorganize my spice shelves. I don't have many shoes, so I can do spices and shoes in the same week.

I love to get rid of stuff. It makes me feel free and unencumbered. But, stuff seems to come in the house as fast as I can get it out. And, if don't use it, I really try to get rid of it. But, with 5 of us, it just keeps on coming, even though I really hate shopping, I just don't know where it all comes from.
