Don't forget to support your small businesses on this day and all year round. We plan on being at the Amish fair. So we'll be buying their goods.

I try to support local businesses too, even when they might be a bit more expensive! Not for toilet paper or canned goods, but for gift items or locally produced things We have a several small businesses that have great gift items.
I will support local business to the EXTENT to which they serve my interests and needs. So, no, I am not going to buy from "mom and pop" if they are they types who hassle me about a return or anything like that. As for non local businesses, a lot of LOCAL people are working in Walmart or wherever so you are supporting those local employees to shop there.
As for the Amish, I am personally not a fan of them who can get by without paying taxes, but many of them in my area are now using Medical Assistance and other welfare aid.

You mean an American is getting something illegals are getting?
Sorry. I'd rather it go to an American any day.

Most of our "local" businesses are down town which means they pay premium rent. It just isn't practical to pay inflated prices for most of the items they carry.
Well, I am personally not a fan of "mom and pop" stores. I have had terrible customer service from some of them. I have never been hassled to return something at a big box store. And, no, I don't want to shop downtown. I want to shop inside and push a cart. I rarely even shop at the Mall because I WANT a freaking shopping cart. I live in Pa and in order to shop around the mall and carry around my purse and my winter jacket and stuff, it's annoying. But, they don't have the brains or care that some of use want shopping carts. I tell them I would buy MORE if you had shopping carts. But, if they don't care enough to make it more convenient and pleasant for me, then I will just continue to go to Walmart and Lowes and Target and wherever else I enjoy shopping.
And for mom and pops, they really need to just focus on speciality items and good customer service if they want to survive.
We had a mom and pop store that I used to frequent. They had awesome gifts. I bought HM some stuff from there when she was DH's SS. But they took out more than half the store and turned it into an eatery. A high priced eatery at that. All the blue haired ladies go there. Now the store part stinks so I don't go there. We have a local bakery but I don't buy cookies and cupcakes from Wal-Mart even. I make ours. So no reason for me to go there. Downtown there's a very cute boutique type place where different people rent out spaces to sell their goods. Everything is pretty pricey there but you can find some incredibly neat stuff there. Every year I go there and get my SS stuff from my hometown. I've spent money there frequently but I won't buy just to buy.
I don't care about supporting the Amish. I see them shopping at Wal-Mart sometimes. They are always nice and I don't have an issue with them. I don't know what their finances are and I don't care. I plan on enjoying my time spent there.

My fav gift shop is a mom & pop downtown. I always shop there TG w/e. When you have someone difficult to buy for on your list, this shop is the perfect one to go to.

We have an old fashioned toy store in town. I love it. All those toys we grew up with. There are new ones too.
I havent been in there for a while. Maybe I should go see what I can find.
Some of the pricy boutique type places are not my thing.
I do like thrift and consignment stores. We will use a local seamstress sometimes. My dad is a small business owner.
We use what we can when we can.

We try to patronize the local mom and pop stores in our neighborhood, but there are getting to be fewer and fewer of them. The big supermarket chains and sushi chains and fast food chains, etc. etc. are driving them all out of business....
And I can see why - the choice at the small stores is very limited compared to the range of goods at a large store. And now the supers are getting into their own generic brands so the prices are really low....
I like to shop at the smaller stores when I can. Except for one in town that is exactly what would drive Gaga crazy. Thinks WAAAAYYYY too much of her store, sucks at returns and has terrible customer service. We don't shop there anymore.
