So, what does everyone do? There are so many alternatives these days, I wondered what all the good Geeks will be doing.
I voted the driving 100 miles or less. Dad and I are driving to my Mom's and having a great, big, wonderful meal (about 45 miles and I know she'll cook everything in the world, as that's how she is). It is really very nice that my parents have forgiven each other for the past (1980-ish bad stuff, divorce) AND especially nice that my stepdad is an awesome person - they all get along. Stepdad has a barrel cooker and everyone raves about the stuff he cooks in it. I'm hungry already!!!
There will be the 6 of us here.
My brother maybe his 2 kids.
Mawmaw.
2 of my mom's brothers.
An aunt and 5 cousins.
And C's boyfriend.
Not as many as in the past but a good bit.

Dinner here. We're doing a really late dinner so we can sleep late and so DN and Sparkly can go to his family's house and then have time to come here.

We are having dinner at our house - just us. DH and I used to go out to eat, but with kids, now I actually cook a turkey. Someone remind me to take it out of the freezer Monday morning, please.
Also - what's with the brining? My mother never brined her turkeys, but it seems the fashion now. Does it really make a difference?

Rub it down good with some butter cover with foil and in the oven it goes.
This year we have a new cooker for it. A cross between a crock pot and dutch oven.

Supposedly gives it flavor. I don't do it when I bake one when DH is gone. When DH is home and fry's them he always does it.

I got my pies tonight for Thanksgiving. They were buy one get one so I got a cheesecake and a pecan. I already have a pumpkin. Making banana pudding and calling the dessert done.

I got mine Thursday and put them in the fridge. Monday I will make the pumpkin pies, Tuesday I will make the pumpkin cheesecake, Wednesday I will spend the day chopping and assembling things. Thursday everything will be thrown in the oven.

I'll be home. Just mom, dad, and me. Possibly my mom's aunt. I'll do the cooking, traditional dinner stuffs.
Tomorrow, my church is having a thanksgiving lunch. Everyone is supposed to bring a hot dish and a cold dish. Well, pastor's wife called me today worried we won't have enough, that there might be people that aren't in a place to bring anything. So my cousin and I took to Walmart tonight, I'll be making a big pot of noodles and about 12 boxes of stove-top stuffing (yes, I hate myself for having to use a box, but it's the best I can do on short notice). I have seven dozen rolls and a tub of butter, and 5 gallons of lemonade. In addition to the corn and 3-bean salad I already had ready to bring. I love my pastor, I really do, but his planning skills leave a lot to be desired. I guess that's why he has me. Next year, we're doing this my way
I've never brined my turkey. I rub it down with olive oil

I voted other. Not sure what my plans are. I normally have a turkey dinner with two married friends. This year, they are going to her dad's for the day, as some of her sisters are flying in. They are cooking the turkey in an underground pit this year. I am off on T-Day. I called agencies providing dinner to the homeless, seniors, those who cannot afford a dinner, and those who are alone to inquire if they need volunteers. They all have enough volunteers. I am glad to learn that so many volunteer during the season. Shops will be open, and I did get paid on Friday, but after rent and two other bills, I have around $30.00 left over. I have no other plans for dinner. I will most likely stay home that evening and not watch any holiday shows on the telly. I work on Friday, so I may just go to bed early.
For a long time, Thanksgiving was my least favorite holiday. DH1 loved it and, every year, would cook TONS of food for the two of us and another married couple. By the end of the day, we were cranky & exhausted.
That's not my idea of a holiday.
DH2 and I & the boys started going out to see a movie (during the Harry Potter years), then going to Cracker Barrel.
For the past few years, DS2 has cooked...the first year for friends & inlaws (lots of hungry people). Now he's scaled back. So I think this year it will be: DH and I and DS1 & DS2 & itty bitty. I can't wait...now if only I could get DS2 to stop making that nasty green bean casserole...
Unfortunately, DS1 won't be staying long. He gets in Wednesday & leaves Friday.

Still not exactly sure of what we are doing. At some point next weekend, I will be cooking a turkey dinner. Just not sure what day. If DSS and DIL come down, it will be Thursday. If not, well, there is no rush. DH & I will go out to dinner on T-day. Turkey is coming out of the freezer today. We will share any leftovers with MIL.
My only plans for shopping next weekend is a local grocery store is also having a Black Friday sale. They have whole pork loins on sale for $1.29. It's one per person but I will have DH with me. And we will go back in after the first purchase to get a total of 4. Last time they had this sale, they also had turkeys on sale for $.09/lb. Yep, nine cents per pound. With no limit. We got 5 turkeys.
We might be inviting DD's friend along for dinner. Her mother just left town for a family emergency and her dad is a fireman and basically lives at the firehouse (his choice). Her brothers aren't coming into town this year and that just leaves the dysfunctional aunt and uncle that live with them.
Cooking half of my parents' Thanksgiving dinner and some pies Wednesday night and leaving it for them to have Thursday. My sister will cook the other half.
Then hosting brunch on Thursday for DD, DSIL, Little Man, and DS.
Then cooking our own dinner for DH and me (DH does the turkey, and I do everything else).
Then going to my parents' house for dessert Thursday evening.
I'm tired just thinking about it.

I rub herbed butter under the skin, arrange sage leaves artistically under the skin, and season the top with poultry seasoning & olive oil. And I stuff it.
Just my parents and the four of us. Small, but stress-free. Afterwards, we go to the local gardens where they have a festival of lights. Walk our meal off, and end with hot cocoa and toast marshmallows at the fire pit.
I bought a 24 lb turkey at Wegman's yesterday. I buy gladware and send my mom home with leftovers.

Sad thing is they have enough volunteers on Holidays, but not enough the rest of the time.

Hey, so far no one choose "Shopping". For some reason I find that comforting.
My church is having a Thanksgiving meal in about an hour and I'm taking dad - he accepted my invitation a week ago. He was humming earlier, which he used to do often but now seldom does. I think he's looking forward to getting out of the house!

Oh that is so great HM, somewhere there are angel wings with your name on it.

I got the last on my orders today. I will wrap it and three other things and that is it.
Tomorrow I go to the grocery store for thanksgiving food.
I am going during the day so I will hopefully miss the crowds later in the day.

Alrighty then, my plans may change. Nor'easter moving in Wednesday, possibility of dumping 10" of snow between home and my destination. Even if the roads are cleared Thursday, the amount of traffic that will out there because of people who didn't leave during the storm will make a 2 hour trip doubled. Not doing that nail biting drive. Waiting until Wednesday morning to make the final decision.
I stopped at the grocery store on my way home. Picked up a fresh 10lb turkey, stuffing fixings, and a pie. I have sweet potatoes. If we don't go DS is coming up (he lives only a few miles away) and wants to fry the turkey. I would home make the pie and such but I am working Wednesday, or at least planning to. I ran into a few neighbors at the store also buying food for a meal if their travel plans are cancelled.
