Teacher charged, on leave after dragging student

November 22, 2014 by THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Video obtained by FOX40 Stockton, shows Denny Peterson,

A Central California physical education teacher was charged with a misdemeanor and put on leave after he tried to drag a 14-year-old girl across the concrete and into the high school's pool.

Denny Peterson, a teacher at Edison High School in Stockton, was charged this week with a misdemeanor count of corporal injury to a child, the Stockton Record reported Friday.

Peterson was filmed with a cellphone by another student while he dragged Sandra Garcia toward the pool in August.

Garcia's attorney Gilbert Somera says she was left with scratches and bruises on her back after being dragged.

"When you have been bullied by an adult in front of your classmates, it places you in a very distressing situation," he said. "It's embarrassing for a young girl like that."

Garcia told Sacramento's News 10 she initially got in the pool but refused to fully submerge in the water because she didn't want to get her hair wet. When she got out of the pool Peterson tried to drag her back into it.

District officials said they couldn't comment on the case because of the alleged incident involves a minor.

Peterson, a 10-year employee of the school, has no history of complaints with the district. He could lose his job if convicted of the charge.

They airbrushed out her breasts in the pictures, which could be because dragging her made her top slip out of place.

That could add charges.

I'd like to know why the teacher thought dragging the student was an appropriate response.

I can see why a swimming teacher would insist that people actually GET WET while learning to swim. BUT putting his hands on a teenage girl cannot be interpreted in any good way that I can think of, unless she was drowning and he was pulling her OUT of the pool.

And I can understand that teenage girls can do things that are infuriating. Still, there's no excuse.

No. He shouldn't have dragged her like that.

However.

Yes. She should have done what she was told and there should be consequences for not following the instructions of a teacher.

Again, HE SHOULD NOT HAVE DONE THIS.

He was way out of line.

"get back in the pool and get your head wet"

"no!"

"you get an F"

how difficult is that?

My understanding was, that she had her hair done that morning, for a function she was going to that evening. (That what the article I read, said.)

How dumb was her Mom? She should have taken her to school, after the PE class was over with, and given an excuse to the office for her arriving late that day.

This whole mess could have been easily avoided.no

The whole mess could have easily been avoided by the Teacher following the Discipline Policy of the school that does not involve dragging students across concrete.

Yes, in a perfect world, that would have happened.

The world isn't perfect, and some teachers are asses.

As a parent, do what you can do, to prevent a situation, where your child is the victim of an ******* teacher.

JMHO.

 Thanks for the additional info.

Any teacher should know there is a good chance their actions will be recorded. Students have cell phones...

I have a family member who works for this district. The teacher is still working, he's been moved to a department that doesn't have any direct interaction with the kids, but he's still working for the school. I'm very curious how this is going to shake out.

I understand that the New York City public school system has something they call "rubber rooms" for teachers who cannot be fired, and cannot be allowed near students. People can collect their paychecks for YEARS just for showing up every day and doing nothing.

My understanding is he has an actual job in a specific department. The position they moved him to was one that was up for internal hiring and some people aren't happy that he was moved to a position they were actively applying for. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

There is very little justice in the world. Maybe they could teach swimming? There's an opening...
