Attorney: Ferguson grand jury reaches decision on Darren Wilson
November 24, 2014 by THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
A grand jury has reached a decision about whether to indict a Ferguson police officer in the shooting death of Michael Brown, a spokesman for St. Louis County's top prosecutor said Monday.
In a brief email to reporters, spokesman Ed Magee said the decision would be announced later Monday. He offered no immediate details.
State and local officials gave a press conference Monday to ask protestors to stay peaceful no matter the verdict, and to reaffirm support for the right of demonstrators to be heard.
"To the protesters, we will give you leeway to occupy public spaces and we will listen to your grievances, said St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay. "No matter what happens, some people will be angry and frustrated. And some people will be angry and frustrated at that."
St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley appealed to the community to avoid violence. "It's not the time for people to turn on each other, it's time for them to turn to each other," he said.
As the nation awaited the announcement, authorities quickly stepped up security at the downtown courthouse in the St. Louis County seat of Clayton. Barricades were erected around the building, and more than 20 Missouri state troopers were seen silently assembling with rifles, 3-foot batons, riot shields and other equipment. Some nearby businesses boarded up their windows, just as many shops have already done near the site of Brown's death in Ferguson.
The grand jury has been considering charges against Darren Wilson, the white suburban St. Louis officer who fatally shot the black 18-year-old after a confrontation in August.
The prosecutor's office has told Brown's relatives that the decision will be made public after 5 p.m., family attorney Benjamin Crump told The Associated Press.
The Aug. 9 shooting inflamed tensions in the predominantly black St. Louis suburb that is patrolled by an overwhelmingly white police force. As Brown's body lay for hours in the center of a residential street, an angry crowd of onlookers gathered. Rioting and looting occurred the following night, and police responded with armored vehicles and tear gas.
Protests continued for weeks — often peacefully, but sometimes turning violent, with demonstrators throwing rocks and Molotov ****tails and police firing smoke canisters, tear gas and rubber bullets.
Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon traveled to St. Louis from the Capitol on Monday in advance of the grand jury announcement. He was to speak with St. Louis-area clergy on a conference call and then hold a news conference at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
Pastors were planning a rally and prayer service later Monday at the West Side Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis.
"There's a lot of hurt, a lot of brokenness. There's anger and frustration on every side," said the Rev. Ronald Bobo Sr., the church's pastor. "We need the hand of God to lead us and guide us."
The 12-person grand jury has been meeting in secret for months, hearing evidence from a wide variety of witnesses as it decides whether Wilson's should face charges that could range from involuntary manslaughter to murder. The grand jurors could decide not to charge Wilson at all.
At the lower end of the possible charges is second-degree involuntary manslaughter, which is defined as acting with criminal negligence to cause a death. It is punishable by up to four years in prison. The most serious charge, first-degree murder, can be used only when someone knowingly causes a death after deliberation and is punishable by either life in prison or lethal injection.
He will be charged. I will be surprised if he isn't. It will be for the sake of looking right.
No matter what happens, this officer has lost what ever life he knew. He will have to move and he will probably never be able to work in law enforcement again.
Personally I think they need to lock the town down and make sure no one leaves their homes for the night. Some one is going to get seriously hurt in this mess.

I am sorry a young teen died. However he acted the thug. He roughed upa store clerk. He shoplifted. He then tired to grab the officer's gun in the vehicle. He is responsible for his own death. And I keep hearing sympathy for Brown. What about the officer and we what he has been through?
Now if he can just get out of town without being killed...

All that stuff bolded he did wasn't in play. He was a thug and reached into the cops car and tried to grab the cop's gun and was shot. It's on that Adult (not kid). And Ferguson will be torn apart tonight.

They keep talking about poor Brown. Yes he brought this on himself. What about Wilson? What about a cop who was trying to do the right thing but now has been thru hell?
A St. Louis County grand jury has brought no criminal charges against Darren Wilson, a white police officer who fatally shot Michael Brown, an unarmed African-American teenager, more than three months ago in nearby Ferguson.
The decision was announced Monday night by the St. Louis County prosecutor, Robert P. McCulloch, at a news conference packed with reporters from around the world. The killing on a residential street in Ferguson set off civil unrest — and a national debate — fueled by protesters’ outrage over what they called a pattern of police brutality against young black men.
Wonder if Obama will still say "this could have been my son"?

Those on the grand jury are going to have a hard time as well I'm afraid.

A militant group that previously offered a cash reward for locating Officer Darren Wilson is threatening to launch “war” on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri if Wilson is acquitted later today.
RbG Black Rebels – a group which describes itself as an “urban militia” – posted a tweet which threatens to activate “war plans” in response to the verdict.
A separate tweet suggests that the group is prepared to go to any lengths to express its fury at the verdict should Wilson walk free.
The group hit the headlines last week when it offered a $5,000 cash reward for information leading to the location of Officer Wilson. “We just wana get his photo an ask him a few questions,” stated the tweet, with the organization insisting it was not putting a bounty on Wilson’s head.
However, in a separate tweet, the group explained that ammunition “will solve a lot of problems.”
Meanwhile, some protesters in Ferguson are threatening to rape and murder the wives and children of police officers in Ferguson.
The announcement of the Grand Jury’s decision on whether to indict Wilson is expected imminently.

I don't know. I would think it would be dangerous.

I know regular juries are a matter of public record. I don't see why a grand jury wouldnt be unless there are special circumstances.
And really, how hard would it be to figure it out if someone wanted too?

Exactly, Lily. How hard would it be to figure it out. Especially in this age of access to almost anything via internet, etc. I am sure people know who the members are; hope they stay safe....
These people are f'ing stupid. Really stupid. This is THEIR neighborhood. THEIR stores. THEIR places of business. They're torching them and breaking windows and vandalizing them. How stupid can you get? This is YOUR home and you're destroying it. Think people. You are not showing your intelligence.

Some one paying attention to who is coming and going from the court house could probably narrow it down in no time.
I still think they should have declared a curfew and made every one stay in their homes tonight.
I would hate to be living there. And any white person is in danger. All they have to do is say the wrong thing at the wrong time.

First they shattered all the store windows, then they looted all the stores, now they're setting the stores on fire.

I saw this in Cleveland during the riots in 1965 -66. Rioters looted and burned their neighborhood stores, and burned some apartment buildings. Then when people had nowhere to buy food, and no place to live, no one cared. What store owner would be dumb enough to reopen after that?
This is the same mentality, imho, that wants cops to let their good little boys be thugs who carry guns, give people a beat down for looking at them "wrong" or because they're the next target in the "knockout game", just keep being good little boys who would never upset their mamas by pulling that cr@p.
And why should a good little boy who happens to be a BIG guy, and a strong-armed robber, get shot just for trying to take a cop's gun?
Why do the cops shoot and KILL their good little boys, instead of just shooting and wounding them?
The good little boys are thugs, and their parents taught them to be thugs.
