So, A few times, I've gone to my libraries website to have them hold a book for me, or just to see if they have a certain title I am interested in. Well, today, I received a message after searching for a book, that it is available on Kindle through the library site. I accepted just to see how it worked.
Once I selected the book, it asked me if I wanted them to send it to my Kindle for 3 weeks. They then routed me through Amazon where I downloaded the book as a library book. In three weeks, it will disappear and I will have to "check it out" again if I need it.
I was surprised that the library would go this direction...

There is usually a charge for the "library" use. If you can read a book in 3 weeks than it's a great thing. Sometimes I get sidetracked and don't get back to reading for a while.

It's what people want. With so many having kindles, ipads, nooks, etc, they are just keeping up with demand. Our library offers it also. It makes our library more accessible to more people. Ours are checked out for 2 weeks, and if you aren't done, you can renew it. We have one patron that has bad eyesight, and it is difficult for her to even read large print sometimes, so a kindle is good for her because she can increase the font size to what she can read. Others use them because they travel a lot and it's easier than lugging books around. Our circulation is pretty good for e-books, but by far we still check out way more actual books. I don't think actual books are in danger yet of being extinct. Kindles, nooks, ipads have their place.
Oh, and offering the service is pretty expensive. Costs for one year runs about 1200.00 for the library, but it is free for the patron of that library, unless you live outside the service area. Then the service isn't available.

Then I had kids and it seemed the only thing I read for a long time had pictures.
Now my eyes are telling me how old I am getting.
