Tomorrow is D-Day (Discharge day) for me

Last night in the hospital. I get the last staples out tomorrow.

It will have been 40 days since I first was taken to the hospital on October 18th with Sepsis and total renal failure. Since then, I've been in 3 different hospitals, 5 different stays. Mercy for 5 days, then Burgess for 1 night, then Methodist in Omaha for a week. Then back to Burgess for a week, mom and dads for a week, back to Methodist for almost a week, and now Burgess again this last week. I'm sick of hospitals.

Can't wait to sleep in my own bed, see my dog and wear normal clothes. I'm excited to try on all my shirts that I wasn't able to wear before. It will be like having a new wardrobe!

I'm really tired tonight. I walked twice, walked an obstacle course once, and practiced going up and down stairs a few times just to make sure I could do it because I have 3 steps up into my house.

I'm ready to get this crap behind me. I'll have a little more recovery -- will have home health aides come, a nurse once a week, and a physical therapist a few times a week for a few weeks. Hope to be back to work in a couple of weeks.

Thanks everyone. It really helped having a place to vent and document my ordeal. And it was nice to be able to read the encouraging comments when I was feeling down. I still have a ways to go but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Wow that was a lot of hospital time. I'm glad you get to go home. Nothing feels as good as sleeping in your own bed after being away.

Some interesting trivial information about me after this whole ordeal: I've lost 30 lbs, and will lose more due to post-surgery swelling, and I've lost 5 inches from around my abdomen. I must have been losing fat as the mass was growing, because I wasn't this small before it started growing out of control.

My abdomen is still sore. I can't pick anything up off the floor, can't push or pull anything. I took a muscle relaxer yesterday because I was feeling like I was going to have spasms again and it knocked me out for a good 3 hours. Still pretty slow and tire easily. I hope to get out more this week to try to build my strength up more.

I don't ever want to have another abdominal surgery - ever.

I'm glad you're home and healing :)

It must be wonderful to sleep in your own bed after so long away from it.

Thanks! It is nice to sleep in my own bed and just have some control back in my life. I'm trying not to overdo it but I want to get my strength back. I haven't been able to do a distance walk because my house is so small, so I think I'll start going to the library where I work and walk there and spend a little time there everyday until I can go back to work.

IKWTDS, I have so many shirts I've bought in the last year or so that haven't fit because they weren't long enough to cover my stomach, it's like I have a whole new wardrobe. I'm wearing a shirt right now that wasn't long enough before, now it fits. So, no shopping trips. I can shop in my own closet!

Thanks. I am doing well, except my family, mom especially, is driving me absolutely bonkers. They think they know what I need, and they think I'm really weak, etc, and they just keep harping on it, telling me what to do, what I should be doing, what I shouldn't be doing, etc. I told them I could drive to the doctor yesterday, and they said no, it's way too early to drive or go back to work. Asked the doctor and he said I could do both any time. Makes me not want to talk to my mom.

Yes, it is great, but I'm not quite ready to go back to work. And I found out today from one of the home health people who came that because I'm on Medicare, that if I start driving and going to work, that I will lose the home health services and Medicare won't pay for their services. So I'm in kind of a bad spot. I can't pay my basic bills with just my disability check. I need the few hundred extra dollars I get from my job to make up the difference. I really need to get back to work, but I'm not strong enough or able to do enough that I can do without home health yet. So I'll see how it goes the next 2 weeks and hopefully by then they will be able to discharge me and I can go back to work at least a few hours a day.

I'm really sore tonight. I'll be going to bed early tonight. Had 3 of the home health workers come - an aide, a nurse, and physical therapy. Physical therapy did me in. Tomorrow, I will go walk a little more.

Well, the home health nurse and physical therapist came today and decided one more week for them and I would be totally discharged. They also said I could go back to work for an hour or two a day about 3 or 4 days a week and see how it goes. If everything goes well by the end of next week, I will be discharged. She said I could drive, and they wouldn't discharge until next week. I told her I've been driving anyway, and she said that was fine. Normally, if someone is driving and going back to work, they discharge them, but she said they'd keep me on for another week to make sure everything goes well.

It's getting easier to stay up all day long without taking a nap. I'm also getting out more so that helps. Steps are still a little hard, but getting easier. That's the only thing they are worried about at this point.

I probably won't be able to go back to work for my full shift until February, but this is a start. It's almost over and getting back to my normal life again.
