The mother of a missing Ohio State football player has told police he texted her about his prior concussions the morning he disappeared. A missing-person report filed with Columbus police Wednesday evening, Nov. 26, 2014, says Karageorge told his mother he was sorry if he was an embarrassment but concussions had his head messed up. The 6-foot-5 senior missed practice Wednesday and Thursday and has not been heard from. The mother of a missing Ohio State football player has told police he texted her about…

The Columbus Police announced in a press conference on Sunday that the body of missing Ohio State football player Kosta Karageorge was found.

Karageorge's body was found in a dumpster near his apartment around 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The spokesperson for the Columbus Police said it appears Karageorge died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Early Wednesday morning, Karageorge went missing after leaving his apartment to take a walk.

Karageorge was a walk-on defensive lineman playing in one game, and was acknowledged during Senior Day prior to Saturday's game against Michigan.

Following the game, head coach Urban Meyer had a message for Karageorge telling him to, "Just come home, man."

"He's only been with us since August, so I don't know him well, but I talked to his mom a couple times," Meyer said. "You need your strength on the team, and I know there have been a lot of prayers on the team."

On Wednesday morning at 1:30 a.m. Karageorge texted his mother Susan Karageorge saying, "I am sorry if I am an embarrassment." in a message that mentioned several concussions he had dealt with recently, and according to the police report, had led to some bouts of confusion.

The Ohio State University Department of Athletics released this statement following the news on Sunday.

"The Ohio State University Department of Athletics was shocked and saddened to learn today of the death of student-athlete Kosta Karageorge, a senior from Columbus. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Karageorge family, and those who knew him, during this most difficult time."

That is sad. But isn't it highly unusual to crawl into a dumpster to kill yourself?

Is he sending the message that he is "trash?"

Possibly. But, I hope they fully investigate to see if he truly did shoot himself in there. He didn't shoot himself in another location and then crawl in there himself.

That was my thought too. Wouldn't there be evidence if he shot himself in the dumpster. Plus I imagine it would have made a lot of noise.

His mother said he was confused and suicidal. She said he felt useless and stupid because the concussions had messed his speech.

I don't know why anyone would play football, knowing the high risk of brain injury. Boxing too.

Life is full of risk.  My dad got a serious brain injury from a car accident--and LOTS of people do, probably FAR more people than get a serious brain injury from playing football given that roughly 50 TIMES more people are injured in car accidents on an annual basis than even PLAY football above the high school level.  So does that mean we should never drive cars?

wonder if he could have done something prior to his death to be " an embarrassment to his family " in his own mind

I think it's a lot safer now that they know how bad concussions really are for you. More emphasis on body tackles and less head first contact. They are also keeping a much better eye on younger players and equipment for head protection gets better every year.

It is always sad to see someone so young take their own life or their life taken from them. My heart goes out to his family.

When I heard today they found him in a dumpster, my thought was he didn't want to impose on anyone and did so in a dumpster so there would be no mess.

That was my thought too. Either that or he was hoping they wouldn't find him so his parents wouldn't have to see him like that.  For some reason, that makes this even sadder for me.

That is sad. It's just football. Not your life.

How many people drive cars? How many people play football in school or professionally?

Do 50 times as many people drive vs. people who play football? maybe 50,000 times? 5 million times?

I love watching football, but hate the toll it takes on the players.

Yeah, he was ashamed of himself and wanting to protect his family at the same time.  Very sad.

This is sad. Seems his head injury probably clouded his judgment.

As for who gets concussions and contact sports.

I gave myself an concussion by raising up into a bunk bed frame while putting it together.

Anything that causes your brain to slam into your skull can cause a concussion.

I have no problem with contact sports. They come with known dangers.

So that makes it even worse.  MANY TIMES more people are taking that risk as opposed to the slight risk of playing football.

Yeah football is a tough sport. But, there are tons of concussions in soccer too but we pretend otherwise. Purposefully hitting a ball off of your head seems like a pretty dumb thing to do to me.
But, I agree, if you want to play the perfect sport, play BASKETBALL!!  biggrin

That might be one of the most interesting things you've ever said. Not interesting in a good way.
