Bus Accident, prayer request

Prayer request.

Two elementary school buses have collided about 10 miles from my home.  Three dead, 19 kids to the emergency room.  I don't think that I know anyone that were on those buses, but there are many families that are hurting.

Two children, one adult dead.

The deceased children are reported to be between the ages of kindergarten and third grade. The adult was an aide on the bus.

Could we lobby for seat belts to be required for all school buses?

"Intermittent showers fell throughout the day, although authorities have yet to say if weather conditions might have been a factor in the crash. Authorities, however, noted seat belts are not required on school buses in Tennessee."

Seat belts on buses are NOT a good idea.

You going to go through and install and seat 20 to 30 kids every single trip? You gonna get up and undo each seat belt?

See a lot of elementary school kids, k to about 2 maybe even 3rd would need booster seats. So where you going to store those when not in use?

You cant just put a seat belt on a bus and be done with it.

Exactly.  Seat belts are as deadly when used improperly as they are when not used at all.  How in the heck are you going to safely buckle in a 5 year old and an 18 year old in the same seat?

My heart hurts for all the families. Sending prayers for all.

Yeah, seat belts on a bus is just silly.

About 5 years ago, New York began requiring seat belts in all NEW school buses. The politicians decided it would cost too much to install them in older school buses.

There has been NO outcry against seatbelts, although a lot of concerns were expressed prior to implementation.

Seat belts save lives.

Again, how is a five year old child supposed to know how to properly fit one? One that an 18 year old 200 pound boy just used?

My kids were taking care of buckling up at age 4. They'd been buckled in one way or another since birth, and they'd have been frightened and angry if they had to ride without being belted in place.

Well, now, kids have to be in a car seat until they are 8 years old (unless the are on a school bus), so they would have no way of knowing how to properly use a seat belt.   You know, because it's illegal for them to use them...

This requires that it be properly restrained.

Cosco-Top-Side-Booster-Car-Seat-in-Leo-P14165436.jpg

Most kids cant even reach where this would fasten.

And again. Where are the 20-30 going to be stored when NOT in use? They would become projectiles in an accident if not properly secured.

Lets talk about unused seat belts.

Those things flopping around in a wreck would seriously injure a person.

Not to mention those who would be horsing around with it and hit another kid.

Seats on buses are designed to protect a child. The high, well padded backs and the closeness of them can help keep a kid from getting really hurt.

The ones killed on buses are usually the ones directly hit. The ones around might get hurt but not killed.

Of all the kids on both those buses, the fact that only 2 kids and 1 adult died says a whole lot about well the buses are made. How safe they are.

A great father fine.

But for a kid to be frightened and angry?

That's a little much.
