Black Friday sales plummeted this year, leaving retailers completely stumped.
After weeks of declining gas prices, many analysts predicted the biggest holiday season ever. Industry groups like the National Retail Federation reasoned that Americans would use their fuel savings on gifts.
Despite encouraging forecasts, Black Friday weekend sales were down 11%. Cyber Monday sales rose 8%, falling short of many predictions.
So where are the customers?
They're probably broke, according to some analysts and executives.
Brad Anderson, former CEO of Best Buy, told CNBC that customers "are still feeling constrained," which could lead to a lackluster holiday season.
Macy's CFO Karen Hoguet told analysts that consumers today have priorities other than clothing and housewares.
"Shoppers are spending more of their disposable dollars on categories we don’t sell, like cars, healthcare, electronics and home improvement," Hoguet said in a call with investors.
The stores that did remarkably well on Black Friday, such as Family Dollar and Kohl's, are all deep discounters, according to a recent Deutsche Bank report.
The success of discount retailers shows that Americans are more concerned about spending money than ever.
Wal-Mart provided few details about results from the weekend, a possible sign of bad news, the Deutsche Bank analysts wrote.
Many Americans are watching their spending despite lower gas prices, writes Lindsey Piegza, chief economist at Sterne Agee.
"Consumers are increasingly familiar with energy price reprieve from summer gas prices and no longer adjust their long-term spending habits as much, or at all, based on short-term price fluctuations," Piegza writes.
And while gas prices are lower, the benefit is offset by higher housing and utility costs, according to Piegza.
Health insurance premiums have increased between 39 and 56% since early 2013, meaning additional costs of $230 per month for the average family.
The lackluster job market is also contributing to poor holiday sales, Piegza writes.
"With uncertainty lingering and patience wearing thin after 5+ years of still lackluster wage growth, consumers are increasing saving for the future, hedging against a continuation of 'more of the same,'" according to Piegza. "Thus, for many, extra savings at the pump as a result of lower gas prices are simply being stored away to help supplement spending needs in the future, ramping up savings, not spending."

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
And... people were shopped out because of the back Friday sales starting right after Halloween.

I think sales slumped, because a lot of people, don't like Black Friday.
Especially, when it starts on Thursday. (Thanksgiving Day? Really?)
JMHO.
I haven't bought a single Christmas gift yet. And, I don't plan to, for another week or so.
Now, my Mom finished her shopping in October. I have her box of gifts, set aside. Heck, she mailed it before Thanksgiving. I already have her Christmas card, it showed up a couple of days ago. Go Mom!
(Okay, Mom is 91. She likes to get things done early.)
I haven't even started. I did put money into my dd's checking acct to buy for my granddaughter, but that wasn't to fun. It is too expensive to ship overthere. The only thing my ds and dil want is gift cards to lowes and other home stores. At least I have great nephews to buy toys for.
This doesn't surprise me at all. I think for many, the finances are just not good this year.
This year has been an extremely trying one for me, and from hearing others around me talk, it is the same for them. They just can't catch a break. I have not started buying gifts for the 9 people I plan to gift yet. Of course, it will all be gift cards, but I am waiting on my year-end bonus from work to help me buy them, and hoping that there is a little left over in my paychecks to cover the rest.
I only buy toiletries and some food now. I need a haircut pretty bad (if I had pointy ears, I could easily be a Hobbit with my hair! LOL) But that is a luxury. I just buy necessities like soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc, and food to eat. There is no wiggle room for me, and I am sure for many out there as well, who live from paycheck to paycheck.
I was done by Thanksgiving. Have it all wrapped and it just needs bows.
Sent my cards out the week before Thanksgiving.
I like having it done. I pick up little stocking stuffers when I am out but that is little things like chap stick or candy.
It is hard to wait to people their Christmas gifts though.

I think there is a loud ring of truth to this. Although some statistics on the economy seems good, some comparisons are not apples to apples. Look at the "low" unemployment rate; there are a lot of people still unemployed but not counted in the numbers because they've given up and many did get jobs but at a much less salary. Gas prices maybe down, but electric is up 40%, food is up a lot as well, and then there is the forced health insurance bill, one that is a lot higher than when a family could buy on the open market and choose a plan without coverage they didn't need. It's bad.

I also think online shopping has decreased in store shopping. Most stores are offering the sames deals online with free shipping. Why leave the house, waste gas, and fight crowds? Plus, there are a lot of online deals these days.

I know we are sticking to a stricter budget this year for Christmas. I also did a lot of shopping online. Like NJN said, it's easier, just as good a deal, and with free shipping. It's nice to not leave the house.
I got the rest of my shopping finished today. I think I will find little things between now and Christmas, but if I don't buy one single thing from now on, we will be covered.
We bought SS a Lego Fire Station. That was his main Santa gift. It's not sold in stores. Only online. We shopped around and found one online and it had free shipping to the house. Most everything we shopped for online had free shipping. I only bought a few things in person. The majority of my shopping was done online. I need to buy stocking stuffers but I have a Wal-Mart gift certificate that I am saving for that.

Hey RTL - Would you feel comfortable PM-ing me your mailing addy?
I think starting on Thursday hurt them. Many people wouldn't go out on Thursday, and then figured the deals were gone by Friday - so what was the point?
