Flu Shots May Not Work Well This Year

Got your flu shot? Good for you. Unfortunately the shot may not work so well this year.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sent a health warning to doctors Wednesday night explaining that said 52 percent of the 85 influenza virus samples analyzed from October 1 through November 22 were different than the virus strains included in this year’s vaccine.

Video: Don't Fear the Flu Shot

The finding suggests a common flu virus mutated since the vaccine’s formulation.

Every year the vaccine is concocted to protect against a mix of viruses. This year the mix includes protection against a strain called H3N2. The problem is H3N2 appears to have drifted from the form it was some four months ago when the vaccine was designed.

How Far Are We From a Super-Pandemic?

Despite the finding, the CDC is still urging everyone over 6 months old to get their flu shot.

“Vaccination has been found to provide some protection against drifted viruses,” the CDC said in a statement. “Though reduced, this cross-protection might reduce the likelihood of severe outcomes such as hospitalization and death.”

So the point of getting the shot is to not get the flu but the shot may not do any good so it could very well have been a waste of time, money, effort and crying.

There are 6 of us in this house. 3 got the shot, 3 did not.

Guess we will see what happens.

This is nothing new, just a new strain has appeared after the vaccine was developed. Happens every year.

I am required to get the flu shot for work. If I don't I have to wear a mask at all times in the hospital.

That is why mom gets it. She works in an assisted living facility.

I got the flu shot and that night I started feeling awful. I ended up with a bad cold that lasted almost 3 weeks. Maybe it is a coincidence, but I still think it's weird how many people get sick after getting the shot. But with a baby in the house I wasn't going to risk not getting it.

The boys and mom all got sick immediately after the shot. Had to have antibiotics and inhalers.

A ended up in the ER.

I know they say that a person can have flu like symptoms after getting the shot but they all ended up really sick for weeks.

Some people react worse to the shot than others. I don't get it because I don't react well, and my doctor basically says "why make yourself feel sick on just the chance you might get sick?".

Antibiotics only work in bacterial infections. Flu and colds are viral infections. If the doctors prescribed antibiotics then they didn't think it was a cold or flu VIRUS.

Also the incubation period is a factor. If they got sick immediately after getting the shot,

they were already sick from something else, just not showing symptoms yet.

Clearly you're making an informed decision.

I don't tell people what to do on this front.  If you are healthy then you should do whatever you feel is right.  If you work around high risk people, in a hospital type environment, I think it's a good idea to get a shot.  I used to not get them and worked with a flu patient one year and he coughed in my face and I was sick for a long time.  Now I have a slight case of asthma and some allergies so that compromises my system.  I get one every year to cover me.

I had to get it for work too - or else I'd be stuck in the mask for four months. I felt like crap in the middle of the night that night but that was it. Of course, my arm is still sore from it and it was two days before I could sleep on my left side!

We've gotten flu shots for years, and never once had any reactions at all. Also haven't had influenza since 1979.

DH's sister died in 2009 (five years ago this coming week) of complications of H1N1. She was only 50, and had no health conditions that contributed.

I had H1N1 that year, too.   There were no vaccines available for it, yet, when it hit this area.  DD10 was the 2nd person in our area infected - she got it from another boy at camp - who was the 1st.  Nice, huh?

Well when they got it, they got the nasal dose. They said it burned. Their eyes even watered a it.

That night they had stuffy noses.

With in a week they were missing school and A was in the ER because he was having trouble breathing.

Coincidence? Maybe.

But both?
