Well. Everyone has to have some kind of title. Right?

At one time we were the carpet capitol of the world. Still make most of the carpet and flooring sold world wide. But people around here worked in carpet mills.

You didn't need a degree for that.

Ex SIL worked in a carpet factory there. No college education. Moved up rather fast. Made really good money.

When we would drive from Indy to Pompano Beach, Dad would always stop at Murfreesboro the first night & Valdosta the second. I remember driving through Dalton because Georgia goes on and on and on and on...

and on...

We always stop in Dalton at the book outlet. What's funny is there is a college there.

Yes. Georgia goes on forever. We have just about everything a person could want. Mountians, beaches, swamps, plains. We have it all!

And yes, we have a college.

I know they are basing this on a Bachelor's degree. But there are a lot of people with certificates here. A lot will go for a particular class for work, get certified and that is what they need and are done.

We also have a lot of people move away once they get to a certain level of education because we simply don't have the jobs for them.

I have a family full of degree holders of varying degrees and they all moved because they cant find work here.

I wonder how much that plays into it?

Well Chattanooga is so close. You would think people would commute to the "city".

In the morning I joke with the boys about all the people on the road going opposite directions to work where the others are coming from.

This area, all of it, is mostly manufacturing or retail. So the jobs that need the higher degrees are just not plentiful.

It's just weird b/c there is a college there. You'd think that would require higher educated people to work there.

Most teachers and professors come from out of state.

The don't need to live there though. I bet quite a few commute.

I used to live in a similar type of town. We had 2 colleges and most of the profs lived in another town and commuted. The staff however lived in town (secretaries, janitors, etc).

Heck, there is a town close to me with the 2 most expensive colleges in the state. Hardly any of the profs live in town, the town is just too small. They mostly live in or near the Twin Cities and commute.

I had a FWB relationship with this man for years. He claimed he was separated/divorcing his wife. I suspected otherwise, so one weekend I flew to Nashville to check it out. The street behind his house was being developed, so I had a clear view into his backyard. Saw the toys that belonged to the children he denied having.

I haven't seen him since but have kept track of him. He apparently received his comeuppance.

LOL. He did two years in a Michigan prison for that then moved back to California after he got out. Last year he got into more trouble...involving a woman he harassed and stole from and did more time for that. I really dodged a bullet with that one.
