'Look the Other Way': Town Fights Atheist Group on 50-Year-Old Nativity Scene

The town of Brookville, Indiana is the latest to become entangled in a dispute with the Freedom From Religion Foundation. The atheist group is demanding that a 50-year-old nativity scene be removed from outside a local courthouse.

The foundation claims the religious display cannot be on public property. The group has reportedly been threatening a lawsuit against the town for years, but residents and officials are fighting back.

The commissioners said they have been ignoring the letters, and instead rallying and fighting to keep the Nativity there.

“If people don't like the look of it I think they can look the other way, or don't look at all. It’s been a tradition here for many, many years and I hope it’s for many more years. I think we deserve the right to put up what the community wants and I don't think anybody else should tell us what to do," Brookville resident Wayne Monroe said.

"I don't understand why people want to take away our love of Christ from us, its his birthday, we need to celebrate that and remember that," resident Ron Anderson said. "When you start taking (rights) away we lose track of who we are as American citizens."

"I think it's going to take a lot more that some outfit from Wisconsin to have it removed," Monroe said.

Steve Doocy talked to Franklin County commissioner Scott McDonough, a resident of Brookville, on "Fox and Friends" today. McDonough said the town believes the First Amendment guarantees the right to express religion freely.

McDonough said the Freedom From Religion Foundation is misreading the law, noting that it is an open forum outside the courthouse and anybody can add a display of a different religion, like a Jewish Star of David.

He also had a message for other towns that might be facing similar threats from this group.

"Stop letting them bully you. They go around threatening to sue municipalities, other government agencies if they permit any type of religious display They use the misconceptions about the separation of church and state to make everyone afraid of getting into the middle of a lawsuit, when the Constitution does protect you," he said.

Found them.

I really hope and pray other communities step up and stand up against these zealots.

I agree with separation of Church and State, so, if they don't allow other religions equal access to the grounds, I actually agree with the Freedom From Religion Foundation. Our government properties should be open to displays from all religions, or they should be open to none.

Just because it's tradition, doesn't make it right or just. Slavery was a tradition once too.

Read the article. He said anyone is welcome to put up anything they wish such as a Star of David or whatever. He's obviously saying he's open to all. Just because no one has put one up isn't the town's fault. And it's not the responsibility of this group to right ills that aren't there.

So this separation of church and state is ok but why is this little group not raising all kinds of crap over the state actually PAYING to build a mosque in another state? Where is the separation there?

It's the other thread.

I think it's ridiculous. This group comes into these small towns and act like school yard bullies.

I agree with what the one guy said, if communities will stop being afraid, this group will shut up and go away.

Shopping centers are private property, not supported by taxpayer money. The owners can do what ever they want (within reason and within the zoning regulations).

The law is extremely clear on this. As long as you ALLOW all religous symbols, you can have any. People forget it's an infringement on religous freedom to ban all symbols, too. The government simply can't favor one over another. And this has been ruled on over and over and over again, so this stupid organization is just wasting everybody's money and acting like an ass.

I know, I'm just amazed how some people in our country would get so offended and a burr up their butt about a symbol they don't believe in and a country that is 90% another religion  would have no problem with nativity scenes.

As ll said as long you allow all religious symbols you can.

Read the article.  It says other religions can put something up.   Also, atheism isn't a religion.

I read the article. My post was poorly written, my apologies for that. My meaning was "It should always be that if any are allowed, then all are allowed."

In this case, since all are allowed, it's fine as is. If that were not the case, then, and only then, I'd be in agreement with the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

It may be fine as it is--but they are still b!tching about it.

Proof that they don't want equal rights or equal treatment--they just want to be jerks.
