Hey, Ladies, This Conservative Blogger Wants You To Stop 'Destroying Your Husband'

A piece about how to stop destroying your husband and your marriage has elicited plenty of attention this week, with some slamming the advice as completely antiquated. Although author Katelyn Carmen told The Huffington Post that she can acknowledge a difference in opinion when it comes to what makes a marriage work, she's sticking to hers.

Carmen's article -- which appeared on FamilyShare.com, a conservative website dedicated to helping men and women strengthen their marriages and families -- lists "five destructive things" she says will ultimately ruin a woman's relationship with her husband and offers tips for keeping the man happy. According to her advice, a woman should live within her spouse's means, never complain, always put her husband first and use sex as a "sacred tool" and never withhold it.

On the subject of never complaining, she writes:

Wives, show sincere appreciation and respect to your husband by carefully following a budget and making the most of what you have. Be wise about your finances.

Constantly complaining about not having enough to fulfill your lavish desires or racking up astronomical amounts of debt on your credit card is a poor way of saying "thank you" to a faithful spouse who works hard every day to provide for the family.

And when it comes to sex, Carmen doesn't really care if you're in the mood.

It is a great blessing to be wanted and needed by a loving, romantic husband who wants to share something so beautiful and important with you -- and you only. Even though you might not always be in the mood, it's worth it to give in (when you can) and spend that time bonding.

The article went viral, and while some praised her tips on Facebook, others weren't exactly thrilled with what she had to say.

"It turns out that while I’ve spent all these years trying to make us happy, I should have been worried about making him happy. Why? I don’t know. Because penis, I guess," Meredith Bland wrote on Mommyish.

And Hemavathy DM Suppiah mockingly rephrased Carmen's words on MyLaunchpad. On Carmen's point about sex, she writes:

Men, susceptible creatures that they are, need lots and lots of physical affection. They cannot live without it and if you neglect your wifely duties, then he’s just going to go elsewhere, and you’ll be a bad, bad wife. Seriously, they’ll give you a trophy.

Never mind if you don’t feel well, or you’re tired, or just not in the mood, your husband’s needs surmount yours (refer to point no. 3) and it is your duty to give him all the pleasure he wants and needs.

When asked about the backlash, Carmen told The Huffington Post: "Some of the strongest emotions we experience as humans come from our relationships with the people we love. Strengthening our marriages and families should be two topics that people think about every day, but people don’t always agree on how that should be done."

"The advice I gave in this article was influenced by a variety of sources," she went on to say, "including my college studies and research -- I minored in marriage and family studies -- family therapists who contribute content to the site, my own marriage and advice from couples I know who’ve have had long, successful marriages."

Though the beginning of Carmen's FamilyShare.com article noted that her tips can also apply to men, she told HuffPost that an article will be coming out next week with advice specifically for men.

"Marriage is a partnership. My advice is just as important and relevant to men –- and we publish advice for both men and women on the site," she said. "As spouses, we should be willing to help one another as equal partners as we honor and serve one another. That, in turn, will bring the greatest likelihood of a successful marriage."

I can give you marriage advice: Mutual respect, choose to use humor, say I love you, listen with an open mind and a closed mouth, don't throw things...words and the past count as things.

 No, it's THIS:

"It turns out that while I’ve spent all these years trying to make us happy, I should have been worried about making him happy. Why? I don’t know. Because penis, I guess," Meredith Bland wrote on Mommyish.

So it's only important that the man is happy? Sure, that'll make a marriage work...lol

I think about the things I do to make Spouse's life work out, (provide food, clothing, shelter, money, computer, car, attention, cable and internet, all the free time she wants, a sounding board ...

and all the things she does to make MY life better ... (trying to fill in the blank) ...

and there's no good reason for me to be here.

and yet, here I am.

I think there is some decent advice here that can be gleaned. Yes, we can do better at appreciating our spouses. What's wrong with that message?

I don't think it's bad advice.

I think people are reacting to the sex advice the most harshly, which speaks for itself. I think a lot of women are not 'in the mood' a lot of the time or use sex as a punishment. I think the LW is saying not to do that. Sex should not be a chore.

I'm not reacting to the sex advice as much as the implication that women have "lavish desires". I guess I just don't understand that I need to appreciate him for being faithful either. I'm not going to thank my husband for being faithful. That's ridiculous imho.

Yeah, lots of men are the big spenders. I see a lot of stupid men buying all kinds of stupid crap and putting their families in dire straits.

I'm not against the sex life advice because I agree with that. It bothers me that the whole tone of the blog is that if you do everything you can to keep your husband happy the marriage will be great. I thought marriage was about two people...lol. Everyone always uses the phrase "happy wife happy life" but I always add "happy husband happy home". A marriage won't work unless both people feel loved and appreciated.

Just because it is written from her side doesn't mean she is saying that he doesn't have to do anything. The advice is from her end and the only person you control is you. If you do your best to make your marriage great, then you have done your best. If he doesn't , then that's on him. I don't think that you have to qualify all advice with "oh, but that goes both ways too or whatever". That's not the focus of this particular article.

I don't agree with all of what she's saying so I'm allowed to say that. Commenting on the article is what happens when you post it LGS...sheeesh...lol. Eeven if I do everything within my power to make a marriage work it really doesn't if he is the only happy one.

I've been thinking about this. The article is written as if the woman doesn't have her own money or income. It rubs me the wrong way.

As for what tiny dancer said...I agree. It takes two people to make a marriage succeed, but only one to make it fail.

I have to ask this.

If the guy routinely makes his woman climax over and over, several times a week, would she be motivated or even willing to withhold sex?

Masters and Johnson, and the (Sheri) Hite Report both say that most guys do NOT have a clue, and do not make their woman climax, and don't understand that 2.5 minutes of intercourse after 1 minute of foreplay, just doesn't do it.

Now I didnt read all of it. But what I did read was saying don't get sidetracked by the "ME" mindset and focus on your spouse.

If both focused on the other, both would have more joy in their marriage.

Now I know there are times that one will need more than the other, a job change or death or something and the one will need to be taken care of more. But then it should balance back out.

I don't know. I don't think it is about turning any clocks back or anything. I think it is more about not focusing on yourself and focusing on your spouse.

In a perfect world I guess....

well, believe marriage is more about perspective, about how you see it and your part in it than in having some " formula " or another--more than anything, would say you have to believe in it, believe in something greater than yourself--like planting saplings that will take a hundred years or more to tower and grow, knowing you will not live to see it but doing it anyway because it is right--giving up some of the purely selfish things you do in order to do things instead that will make her happy, make her life more beautiful

do not pray very much as the Almighty doesn't really listen to men like me but can tell you for certain that many times over the course of our marriage, she has spoken from her heart to me and have had the sense that it was not just her but the Almighty himself speaking directly to me--very moving, very meaningful

and at some point, you have to decide why you are in this life--my lady is the reason i'm still here

The sex advice ticked me off. How many men come home, eat dinner, spend alone time working on their hobby or whatever, and then expect the wife to be in the mood ?!

The sexiest thing my husband ever did was hand me a glass of wine, put on my favorite movie, and gave the kids a bath, got their backpacks ready for school and made their lunches while I relaxed. That was hot as heck. Being treated like someone's housekeeper and nanny...not hot.

That's not what it said, at all.  However, I can guarantee that the advice given to just make yourself happy wont result in a good marriage.  Each partner should be focused on making the other happy.  Just because the article didn't give advice to men on that score doesnt make the advice wrong.

Did you read my other post where I said essentially the same thing as you...lol. The phrase "happy wife happy life" is always followed by "happy husband happy home". That is what it said by the way. It was all about making your husband happy. If you make your husband happy you'll have a good marriage. To make a marriage work both people must be happy not just the husband.

what you originally posted was some irrelevant question that didn't have anything to do with the article.  Your post didnt even contain the word wife or anything whatsoever about keeping her happy.

It did have to do with the article. She wrote about all the things to do to keep your husband happy and that will make a good marriage. Not true. Both people need to be happy and too damn bad if you didn't like my post. With the nonsense that you post you shouldn't be throwing that word around so much. The article was all about keeping the husband happy that's what I posted about. Why don't you go find someone else to fight with.

The article was about keeping the husband happy, but that doesn't mean they are sating the wife should be miserable.    MOST articles in MOST magazines or wherever only give one side at a time.

I think the people that have a problem with the article missed this important sentence:

"Though the beginning of Carmen's FamilyShare.com article noted that her tips can also apply to men, she told HuffPost that an article will be coming out next week with advice specifically for men."

The writer wasn't advocating some sort of "be a slave for your man" kind of servitude. This was one article in a series with a specific focus for each article. In this case, on what the lady of the house should do. The man of the house isn't off the hook, advice for him will be in a different article. One that will likely be as single gender centered as this one is.

I think the advice is good, as long as the advice for the man of the house is roughly the same.

Do you have to agree with everything to the nth degree to glean any wisdom or advice? There are some good points of emphasis. You can focus on that or take offense at everything that you think supposedly implies something.
