To buy or not to buy?

DN and Sparkly have been dating for 16 months.  They are now spending all the holidays together.  He comes over on a regular basis.  We got him a couple shirts for Christmas.  We can't really pretend he's not part of the family.  On Christmas morning all the kids will have all their presents plus stockings.  He'll just have a couple of shirts.  I know he says he doesn't celebrate with his family.  They just have dinner together but no presents.  I'm wondering if I should buy a tiny stocking and fill it with a few things for him.  Like one of those one dollar stockings and stick some candy and snacks in it.  Maybe some beef jerky and stuff.  Not a lot.  Just so he doesn't feel left out.  I bet I could pull it off for five bucks.  What do you geeks say?

Do it.

And make it as nice as everyone else's.

I would absolutely make a stocking for him. I think that's a nice, inclusive thing to do.

Do it!!

DD has been dating her guy for 8 months or so and he will be spending Christmas with us. I got him a stocking and filled it with some simple things that I know he likes - a tea he drinks, a pair of gloves, some snacks. I also bought him a few presents to open.

We already told her we bought him shirts. Last year DH said we wouldn't buy him anything because they were too new. They didn't even spend the holidays together. But they're talking about the future now so I guess he's family. I'm not sure what he'd like in it but I really can't go wrong with some small packages of peanuts, beef jerky, maybe some shaving cream and razors. I have other candy. I don't know what he likes but I guess I could wing it. I don't want him to feel left out. He's a nice enough kid. He even asked me to wrap her presents because he's so bad at it.

Ok Ya'll are talking about relationships of months or more.

Do I get something for my daughter's boyfriend? They only officially started dating this last weekend. But they have known each other for years.

My mom got him something. I guess I need to get him something too. Ok. I will.

Now. What?

Lily, last year they had only been together about four months. They chose not to spend the holidays with each other. They were too "new". He did come over for Thanksgiving but on Christmas they did not spend time together. This year it has been 16 months. Well over a year. He has now come around a lot. They are talking about making it permanent. So yes, we got him two shirts. If they get engaged or married we will get him more things. But I still think a stocking will be nice.

I agree.

In this situation with my daughter, he will come over Christmas day for lunch.

I don't want to make him uncomfortable by either not getting him something or by getting him something. I very much doubt he will be getting anyone but C anything.

Maybe a gift card? Some kind of candy?

A five dollar gift card to a fast food place in a nice Christmas card? Surely you have a Christmas card left over!  biggrin

I think that is a very thoughtful thing to do.

If you guys like him and are glad he is the one she ends up with, do it and make it as nice as everybody else's.

If he is going to be a part of the family, treat him like part of the family.

We made an executive decision. We decided to go full on with the stocking. We went to the dollar store and found a really cute Frosty the snowman stocking. We also found a new stocking for SS because his is looking shabby. We got a Rudolph one for him. And we found a cute dog one and got it. I found some chocolate tools and bought those. She told us what shampoo and body wash he uses so we're going to pick up one of each. Now we just have to find out what he likes to snack on. He's an okay guy. We like him well enough. SHE likes him so I guess that means a lot.

I'm going to post the same advice I gave on flan327's thread.

Christmas is about giving. I would.

So we got a list. We know his shampoo and his body wash brand. He likes Slim Jims, chocolate chip cookies, pecans, Hershey bars with almonds. We're just going to get a bunch of small stuff for him and fill up his stocking. Here's the stocking I got him. It's the snowman one.

DN was thrilled! I think he'll appreciate it. He loves my SS. They're both boys who like toys. SS likes toy motorcycles. Sparkly likes big ones.

I know I'm chiming in late here, but I agree with making it the same as everyone else's. And, if he is going to be present when everyone else is opening stockings, he should have one, too.

When I was shopping with my mom this weekend, she asked me if I was going to get stuff for BF's stocking or if she should. She already ordered him a stocking holder. (We all have the same stocking holders engraved with our names). She did say, however, that he had to be around for two Christmases before she was having his engraved, lol. I'm okay with that :)

Here's a quick update. I told DN I got him a stocking and what I got for it. We went full out like everyone elses. Apparently she suggested it would be polite to pick up a little something for us. So now he is out shopping for us and even the dogs. We told him to buy us even more coffee mugs. DN said she knew the kind we liked and would take him to the mall this weekend shopping. He even asked what the dogs wanted. I suggested he buy them some doggy freshening biscuits. One of them smells like she ate someone ass.
