The affected machines are Keurig Mini Plus brewers made between December 2009 and July 2014 with the model number K10 and serial numbers starting with 31, the company said on its website. (bit.ly/1GT8a1G)

The recall affects 6.6 million machines in the United States and 564,000 in Canada.

Keurig's shares were down 3.3 percent at $135.15 in light premarket trading on Tuesday.

The company said the machines could malfunction especially if used to brew more than two cups in quick succession.

Keurig has received about 90 reports of injuries caused by hot liquid escaping from the machines, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

Health Canada said Keurig had recorded 17 incidents of minor burns in Canada. (bit.ly/1vjxlmz)

The Keurig Mini Plus is a single-serve brewing machine used to prepare hot beverages such as coffee, tea and cocoa. It retails for about $100 and is sold through retailers, departmental stores and Keurig's website.

Keurig reported a 5 percent fall in net sales of brewers and accessories in the fourth quarter ended Sept. 27, including a provision of $22 million related to returns of Mini Plus brewers. (Reporting by Ramkumar Iyer in Bengaluru; Editing by Ted Kerr)

SAFETY RECALL NOTICE – REPAIR REQUIRED

Dear Valued Customer:

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission ("CPSC") and Health Canada, Keurig Green Mountain, Inc. is voluntarily recalling MINI Plus Brewing System units with model number K10 (formerly identified as B31) produced prior to July 2014. This issue does not affect any other brewer models.

Keurig MINI Plus Brewer

What Occurs?
Hot liquid could escape from certain MINI Plus Brewing System units during use. Keurig has determined that this event is more likely to occur if the brewer is used to brew more than two cups in quick succession.

Action Required
Please contact us immediately to obtain a free repair kit which resolves the potential issue. To determine if your brewer is among those units potentially affected based on its serial number displayed on the bottom of the unit (pictured below) visit www.miniplusbrewer.com any time or call toll-free at (844) 255-7886 Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) and Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) or email keurig@inmar.com. Please note, the call center will be closed December 25, 2014 and January 1, 2015 but www.miniplusbrewer.com will remain accessible during this time.

Keurig Mini Plus Brewer Serial Number Location

In the meantime, you can continue to use your brewer. We recommend you avoid brewing more than two cups in rapid succession and maintain an arm’s length distance from the brewer during the brewing process.

If you purchased the product as a gift, please notify the gift recipient of this important safety information.

The satisfaction and safety of our consumers is our highest priority and we are committed to resolving this issue as quickly as possible.

We appreciate your immediate attention to this important request. Please contact our toll-free MINI Brewer Plus hotline with any questions or concerns: (844) 255-7886.

Sincerely,

Keurig Consumer Care

Please select the appropriate link to learn if your MINI Plus Brewer is affected.

We are actually getting rid of our Keurig soon. DH is looking for a coffee maker that makes a pot and a single cup. The new Keurig that does both requires use of only their K-cups. That ticked DH off.

The real money is ALWAYS in selling the disposables. Or, as the user, the REAL expense is in buying the disposables.

? 48 cups and up ??? Who uses 48 cups at home? In fact, other than a restaurant, who would brew that much?

This is why it's a good idea to register your products.

I have a keurig that I seldom use. I just don't think it makes very good coffee (IMHO). The only reason I keep it is to make that occasional cup of decaf for a dinner guest.

I totally LOVE my Cuisinart burr grind and brew. It grinds beans the same way that Starbucks does, and when I buy whole beans at Costco, a 12 cup pot of really great coffee costs me about 80 cents....

No.  You'll get a repair kit that you have to install.  Have fun!
