I remember trying to keep the kids occupied on Christmas eve. It's a lot easier when you have things to keep them busy.

Anyone can post ideas. For any age.

We used to make silver bells for Santas' reindeer to keep us busy on Christmas Eve. Dixie cups, aluminum foil and red ribbon and voila. I still think of that every time i see a Dixie cup now.

I tell them that if they are good, they can open the gifts from the in-laws. There's only one or two, so it's a little taste of the things to come, and helps them remember which gifts were from whom.

Sock puppets are easy. And the kids can work out a little Christmas story for everyone. Some glue and googly eyes and yarn and a few rubber bands and you are good to go.

Send the kids out to gather a few pine cones. Smear them with peanut butter and roll them in bird seed. Hang on the trees out side. Then watch the birds.

Making reindeer antlers from tree branches.

Give the kids video camera and let them make a Christmas movie for everyone to watch.

Or they can record different things through out the day. Make a memory movie of what they are seeing.

Have them help making cookies for Santa. Read Christmas stories or watch a Christmas movie. Have hot chocolate and sing Christmas carols.

We always ad our big family dinner on Christmas eve and then we went to midnight mass. We were exhausted by the time we got home and went straight to bed.

Christmas eve has always been a busy one around here. No sitting down to watch movies. And if we tried, it wasn't long before the "how much longer till Santa comes" questions started again.

So I had to come up with ways to keep the kids busy.

We enjoy a huge extended family soup supper on Christmas Eve. Lots of kids there, toys and games for every age. One individual gathers all the kids and reads the Christmas story sometime during the evening.
The kids are to busy with each other to be bored. By the time everyone gets home, they drop from exhaustion just like the parents. wink
