The Sarah Palin, son and dog kerfluffle
Permalink

I'm not posting the article cuz I'm on the kindle and it's a pain in the ass.  The gist of it is Sarah Palin posted a pic of her 6 year old son standing on the family dog.  People are freaking out.

I think it showed poor judgement in letting the kid do that, and it appears she's oblivious to how that would look to people regardless of political leanings.

What do you guys think?  Standing on dogs ok?  Taking pics and posting them ok?

I wouldn't let my kids stand on the dog. It probably didn't hurt the dog but that's not the point. You don't stand on a dog. She showed poor judgment by posting it but I guess we've all done something stupid a time or two in our lives. Some of us just didn't have our sins spot lighted.

http://www.gossipcop.com/sarah-palin-son-trig-standing-dog-pictures-facebook-photos/

Sarah Palin has sparked controversy by posting Facebook photos of her six-year-old son Trig standing on the family’s dog and praising him for using the pet as a “stepping stone.” The former Alaska governor and onetime vice presidential candidate shared the images on Thursday as a New Year’s greeting to supporters.

She wrote, “Happy New Year! May 2015 see every stumbling block turned into a stepping stone on the path forward. Trig just reminded me. He, determined to help wash dishes with an oblivious mama not acknowledging his signs for ‘up!’, found me and a lazy dog blocking his way. He made his stepping stone.” In the pics, Trig is seen climbing on Jill Hadassah, adopted by the Palins last August.

Palin’s son has Down Syndrome, and the former politician seems to have intended the photos as a tribute to his resourcefulness and perseverance. Indeed, the post has already garnered more than 50,000 “likes.” But the shots have also generated thousands of comments, many of them expressing outrage about the lack of concern for the dog’s welfare.

“What kind of ignorant fool let’s their child do this?!?! THAT POOR DOG!” wrote one concerned commenter. Another upset individual declared, “Cruel, selfish and despicable… that poor dog and an otherwise mother who doesn’t understand discipline.” Hundreds of people called the situation “abuse” or “animal cruelty,” blasting Palin for failing to respect her pet or teach her child proper care.

Other commenters defended Palin, saying it was no big deal and that the dog would have moved if she were actually in pain. Palin’s supporters say there’s nothing malicious happening in the images, and that neither Trig nor Sarah has done anything wrong. Look at the pictures below, and tell us what you think.

I don't think it is a good idea to teach children to stand on animals. Most animals wouldn't like that very much.

Sure, not all of us have our mistakes posted out in the open. But she posted this herself !

I wouldn't let the kids stand on the dog. If it happened, I would use it as a teaching moment. I wouldn't take a picture of it and certainly wouldn't post it online.

I don't think its the worst thing in the world, it just shows her poor judgement.

Like I said, kids shouldn't stand on pets. Bad idea. Also bad idea to post it on FB. Poor judgment all the way around. However, in the big scheme of things there much more important things to get all bent out of shape over.

Some of the comments are pretty mean. Someone commented that she should have aborted her son and this wouldn't be an issue.

I'm an ultra protective crazy puppy mommy. I've grounded kids from my yard for being too slappy with my fur baby. I'm also of the age where I kinda like him more than I like my adult children so I think i might have had an effin heart attack if someone, anyone stood on my dog.

I agree with MM, Sarah posted these herself. I think that shows poor judgement as does letting her kid step on the dog.

I think the dog would have got up, and walked away, if she were being hurt.

And, her son has Down's. He didn't know any better. Should she have got him off of the dog, and told him it's not nice to stand on the dog? Yes. I think so.

But, people have it out for her.

Don't post pictures like that. You end up giving the haters fuel for the fire.

JMHO.

Yes. That was a dumb move, on her part.

I hope she learned a lesson.

Just because her son has Down's doesn't excuse his behavior. People tend to coddle kids with developmental disabilities and it's the worst thing you can do. You wouldn't let your typical child stand on the dog, so you don't let Trig. His disability should have nothing to do with it.

His disability does have something to do with it. Most children, at the age of six, would know better than to stand on the dog.

He didn't know any better. So, he did.

She should have gotten him off of the dog, and explained that standing on your dog is NOT acceptable.

Taking pictures and posting them, was stupid.

I think it does factor into it, from the stand point that, he would stand on the dog, because he didn't know any better.

Most six year olds, wouldn't do that.

He did. I don't think he meant to hurt the dog. He stepped on the dog, because the dog was handy. In his way. And, a way to reach the sink.

His Mom should have used the incident as a teaching moment, instead of taking pictures, and posting them.

JMHO.

That's a BIG DOG!
The dog does not look offended. And it is definitely not being injured by the boy.
Would you rather have seen a picture of the boy kicking the dog? No. I wouldn't because THAT would be abuse of the dog.
This is not. IMHO

Nephew has been known to sit on Corgi. Corgi never even woke up. The conversation went like this: nephew, are you sitting on corgi? YES! Don't sit on the dog!

Should he be standing on the dog? No
Should she have taken a picture of it? Why not, it was cute
Should she have posted it? No
Is this a big deal? Nope

I'm so over the top protective. My daughter was bit by the family dog (a passive ****er spaniel) when she was 2 and ended up in the hospital for 5 days. I just think that it's asking for trouble. The rule in our family was ya DON'T hit, stomp or stand on the dog. Honestly, I'd give the side eye to anyone who posted this.

Our youngest has been bit twice by dogs. The first time, she laid on a dog who had a very full tummy. She was four at the time and almost lost her eye. The dog was a mixed breed smaller dog.

The second time was this last spring when the neighbors dog attacked her for no reason, as she walked down the street past their house. This dog is part wolf.

The first incident I consider an accident. The second was a vicious dog attack.

I see nothing wrong with this picture. JMHO

Really? People are going to read all kinds of drama into ONE picture? Big deal. The dog doesn't look like he minds. It's their family pet. Our family pet put up with a lot when we were kids. Dogs get tussled as part of the family too.

Geez, I had a dachshund growing up. That poor dog was my living breathing doll. I used to put all kinds of jewelry on her, clip on earrings and put baby clothes on her and push her around in my baby buggy when I played as a girl. That dog had the Patience of Job!

Times have not changed much, LGS. Our DGD's dress their dog in princess outfits all the time. Poor thing.

They have a little more trouble with the cat..

I'm probably coming from a different angle because I was raised in a family that trained police dogs. I was terrified of dogs for a large part of my childhood. I might not have a healthy perspective but at the same time I think it's reasonable to be uncomfortable with kids standing on dogs.

Just because I'm uncomfortable doesn't mean it's wrong in all families. In mine tho, we wouldn't allow it. And if her son thinks it's ok to stand on this dog, does he understand not all dogs can be treated like this? It's a learning opportunity really.

You are probably right, VoR. Perspective and experience does make a difference.
Police dogs are big dogs as well. We had a German shepherd for 13 years. She guarded the kids with her life. The kids were not afraid of her.
This dog (in the photo) looks very relaxed and used to kids crawling all over him. A great family pet, IMHO.

I don't think the dog is being abused.
That being said...this behavior should be discouraged. Not put up on social media like it's cute. Because it's not cute. And teaching kiddo that this is ok could have bad consequences with unfamiliar dogs down the road.

Also what happens when kiddo gets bigger? A child won't hurt a dog that size. A teen could.

That's the only thing I really see wrong with this.  Right now the boy is young and probably not that heavy.  She should be teaching him not to climb on the dog because one day he's going to be a lot bigger and the dog might not like it.  I guess I don't see this as a hill to die on.

If the dog was being hurt, it would move. That is what dogs do in these situations.

The dog looks like it is playing along.

Shoot the dog may have been helping the kid get a treat for both of them.

I agree. I don't think it is animal cruelty or abuse in the slightest, but that is the exact reasoning behind me not letting DD do it. At some point she will be too big and then it will hurt the dog.

There are some things that should not be put on social media. This is one of them.

As for the dog, he doesn't look like he's hurting. He's probably used to children.

I have a friend who raised 6 boys. They used to do crazy things to their pets. Shave the cats, pose them in pictures holding cigarettes reading porn, you name it. This was before social media and the internet, thank God.

Pets, if raised with love, trust their masters, and allow all kinds of non-painful stuff to be done to them, because they know their master will not hurt them, but protect them from harm.

I teach my boys to respect animals, and to ask an owner before approaching one. And even then, let them sniff the back of his hand first before attempting to pet. Go slow. But I do this not to protect the animal, but to protect my child. Because I'm still at the age where I value human life over that of an animal.

This is an example of how stupid social media can make a person, imho.

If I saw my child standing on the family pet, my first reaction would NOT be to run & get a camera. Remove the child & gently explain that we don't stand on our pets.

While Sarah Palin Gets Heat for Trig Standing on a Dog, Ellen Show Posted Pic That Was All Chuckles

2015-01-03_10-52-27-621x330.jpg

It’s just your usual week for faux controversy in America, with Sarah Palin, the polarized target of mockery and ridicule, drawing fire for a post of her son Trig standing on a dog:

Happy New Year!

May 2015 see every stumbling block turned into a stepping stone on the path forward. Trig just reminded me. He, determined to help wash dishes with an oblivious mama not acknowledging his signs for "up!", found me and a lazy dog blocking his way. He made his stepping stone.

- Sarah Palin

Meanwhile, back in the Ellen fandom, it’s all giggles and laughs when the Facebook page posts a photo of a child… wait for it… standing on a dog:

kidstandingondogellen.png

Does that mean the Palin haters will “call off the dogs” about Trig’s childlike faux pas? Stay tuned for next week’s edition of fake controversies in America.

Sorry but dogs are animals and if they get stepped on the wrong way or in a spot where it hurts, the child is likely to get mauled.

Irresponsible all the way around.

But is highly unlikely to happen with a family lab.  They will let kids crawl all over them.  Picture above being case in point.  The dog doesn't even look bothered.

Seriously? All it takes is one wrong step or slip to hit a nerve or pressure point. I wouldn't stake my kid's health on that chance just to get my jollies off by letting them stand on the dog.
