"Mall bralls" -- WTF?

Have you heard about the latest teen "fad?"

Get a large group of bored teens, go to a mall, and FIGHT.

Social media at its worst.

I've heard reports in 3 or 4 cities, and am pleased to report that Indy had one last night...no

DG, I saw the headline & guessed it was Castleton. I was right.

These are huge groups...think hundreds of teens.

Scary sh1t.

I remember a time years ago when something similar was happening but I think it was mass shoplifting, not brawling.  Anyway, the mall authorities wouldn't allow more than 4 teens in a group in through the doors and wouldn't let more than 10 congregate together in the mall.  And the police opened satellite offices at the mall.  Teens will be teens and authority will restrict them.  Idiots.

Good grief! Don't they have anything better to do?

I haven't heard of any around here. I suppose it's just a matter of time.no

They cause a huge distraction and loot as well. For years one of the malls in savannah has had a rule of no teens allowed without a parent. There was a huge stink when they first enacted it but they were losing shopping due to all the teens hanging in big groups.

I rarely seen teens at the Mall anymore. Seems they mostly staying home plopped on their cell phones.

I saw the headline Flan. So sad. I remember when I first moved to Indy, Castleton was a nice, safe area. I would have expected something like this at Washington Square or Lafayette Square, and unfortunately Castleston is in that group now.

The mall closest to me now isn't great. It's smaller with a sparse selection of stores. But at least I don't have to worry about a mall brawl. I don't think there were 100 teenagers there throughout the whole mall last night lol

I was watching the local news last night and there was a story on this. The newscaster said the local police were are of the fad & were monitoring social media.

There were over 200 teens at the mall last night & it took over 2 hours to disperse the crowd.

So so STUPID.

There is nothing at Lafayette Square anymore. That's the mall closest to us. I think Washington Square is dying too.

Castleton on a Saturday night is busy anyway...but add these punks to the mess...no

Those two have been on life support for years. Lafayette square used to be the closest to me, but I only went there once. I never felt safe going there

the last few years, I didn't like going to Castleton, it's a nice mall, but it was just too busy.  And the people there were a new brand of rude idiots. I stuck with Hamilton Towne Center unless there was a store I needed that they didn't have. Or Greenwood, I like Greenwood Park

Which is what these stupid kids do to malls and such; they scare away real customers then they complain they have nothing to do, or worse, that store owners are targeting them and assuming they will shoplift or vandalize!

Teens cry about expressing their individuality but then follow fads like doing a mall brawl. Little robots.

True, but to be fair, the teens had nothing to do with me not feeling safe at that particular mall. The area its in in general is not safe for a girl like me to wander alone.

It's close to where I work.

We have lived here for 26 years, and it's been so sad to see the area go downhill. Lafayette Square used to have 2 nice department stores (Lazarus & Penneys, maybe), a bookstore, nice places to eat...I can't remember the last time I went. It was nothing but kiosks selling "grilles" and fake gold jewelry.

Malls need to wake up. I rarely shop at Malls anymore. Not because I don't like what they have but because I want to shop with a shopping cart! Walmart understands this. But, the Mall doesn't. I live in PA, so to go in and shop, I am lugging around my purse and winter jacket. I would buy MORE if they simply had carts. But, they don't sooo I guess I will give my money to stores who make it easy for me or shop online. Then, they wonder why these malls are so dead.

We went to the mall yesterday. I hadn't been in over a year. I was surprised at how empty it was on a Saturday.

I really think folks are doing their shopping online. I don't expect malls will be around for much longer.

LGS, that's a good point about shopping carts. Malls exist so people will buy things. Why not make it as easy as possible?

We have required parent supervision at our mall on Fridays and weekends after 4:00 PM. NO kids under 18 without parent supervision.

A couple of the malls around here have khols as part of the mall. They don't mind if you take the cart with you to other parts of the mall

I hate the kiosks too. I've been followed and harassed to try whatever they were hocking. I just keep waking and ignore them. I feel rude, but they don't leave you alone when you politely say no thank you. I used to have hair to my waist, and it is stick straight. I had some guy follow me with his "amazing" hair straightener trying to get me to let him use it on my hair - after saying no thank you multiple times. After about 50 feet I finally whipped around and said does it LOOK like I need any help getting my hair straight?? He finally backed off. That was when I just started ignoring them completely. He kinda freaked me out

Well, some of them have some crappy little folding carts, which are better than nothing.  Bon Ton has those now.  But, a lot of them are not set up to be able to navigate a cart through the aisles or merchandise.  But, if they don't mind the loss of revenue then fine.    And, after I buy something I really don't feel like walking through the mall dragging a bunch of bags and then setting them down to look at other stuff.  I dont' see why there simply can't be mall carts that you can take from store to store.  But, it's their business, so no skin off my back, I will just shop online.

I shop a lot at two local malls: Wal-Mart and Costco.

Both provide shopping carts.

There's nothing rude about turning to the guy who's following you and screaming "GET AWAY FROM ME YOU PERVERT !!! "

There is a big mall near my dad in S. Fl. There are a lot of foreigners that shop there. They wheel around large rolling suitcases and fill them with their purchases. It's kind of amusing to look at them as the wheels clickity click across the tile.

I prefer the outdoor malls and am happy to see mall developers going in that direction. And I think carts would cheapen the look of nice malls, perhaps the plastic hand basket on wheels that some stores have would be good but not grocery sized carts.

Why is it "cheap" to have metal carts?  But, I really don't care if it looks cheap.  I am there to get what I want to buy.

A stroller is a great idea. I miss my kids being babies, but if I needed to carry stuff where there are no shopping carts, I wouldn't hesitate to use an umbrella stroller.

I love the indoor mall near me, especially for exercise walking in the winter.

They have been ahead of this trend of teens congregating. They won't allow large groups, and have signs everywhere that say that, and security disperses them quickly.

I reported a big gang of kids to security once, and they were on it within a few minutes and dispersing the kids.

The mall where I used to live had a walking group. On rainy days a friend and I would bring our day care kids and walk a few laps. Every one always enjoyed seeing the little cuties walking with them.

I think it's more a matter of putting restrictions in place BEFORE fighting starts.

These incidents involve hundreds of teens and are planned to cause trouble.

I haven't been to the mall in probably 3 years. Never was a huge fan of the mall.

Our mall doesn't allow anyone under 18 without a parent or guardian after 5 or 6 at night. If they work there, they must have their name tag on and visible and they are only allowed to go to one of the restaurants on break or the mall office/bathroom area.

A nice mall is fun for shopping with a girlfriend...chatting & having lunch.

DG, I should head to Greenwood sometime. That one is still fairly safe.

You should. It nice. I spent a lot of time there during my last job in Indy when I had long periods of time to kill. they have groupings of comfy couches, sometimes I'd grab a soda and just sit there on my tablet (free wi-fi too!)

they have nice stores too. Not all just teenager geared crap
