Strange adventures in pet ownership: A UK man noticed that his beloved goldfish was constipated, brought him to the vet, learned that it would cost roughly $465 for surgery, left the vet because it would be crazy to pay that kind of money for a goldfish, returned guiltily 10 minutes later to pay the money, and now has a healthy goldfish again, reports the Telegraph.
The two necessary quotes from the vet:

"The issue was the fish couldn't poo and it would have eventually become toxic and it would have died."
"The actual surgery is quite straightforward but administering the anesthetic is quite complicated." (It involved tubes and a miniature heart-rate monitor, and the the Daily Mail has photos.)
The vet in Norfolk removed two lumpy obstructions from the 3-inch fish during a 50-minute procedure and stitched it back up.
This is actually the second goldfish surgery to make headlines within a year, though the first fish was 10 years old and the more recent patient is just under 3 years old; the creature's life expectancy is about 10 years.
I wouldn't have taken it to the vet to begin with.

Yeah, who would notice that a fish is constipated? And even if it was, isn't it likely to happen again?
When they are constipated, they tend to float sideways. Their belly leads the way. If you have fish, it is pretty obvious when they are constipated actually. I know it sounds strange but you can tell.

I would never spend this money on a fish because I think it's a waste of my money. I wouldn't criticize someone who did though. It's their money and their decision.
I had a fish a few weeks back that had fin rot. Their fins literally rot away and they eventually die. I spent about $5 on a treatment. When it didn't work, I watched the fish. When it appeared that it was not swimming normally, I knew the end was near. I removed it from the tank, put it in a ziploc bag and it died. It would have taken days more to die of the fin rot. I put it out of its misery - although on fish forums they say you should smash it with a hammer to get it over quickly. I couldn't do that though.

How can you tell if a goldfish needs putting down? When it dies, I flush it. I do not have the time or inclination to spend that much time staring at my goldfish to determine if it is in pain.

There are some breeds of dogs that are prone to digestive issues...like shih tzus. Rubbing their bellies help with this. I think for $495, I would have tried rubbing the fish's belly first and if that didn't work, flush-a-roo.

Well, if you own fish, you can see if it is breathing or not. If it's breathing is slow or labored, it's probably in pain. Just like any other living thing. If it is, like mine was, then you should probably do what you would do for any other pet.
I find it ironic that the "all life is sacred" people are scoffing at someone saving a fish, or putting a fish out of its pain. Very telling.

What is so "telling"? That is ridiculous. No, there is not the same value in the life of a goldfish as there is a human being.

What if the fish had needed to use a handicapped stall?
I don't think so either LGS. Not even close. I would assess the fish and proceed as I stated that I did. Try a simple cure theN put the fish out of its suffering.
But if you are arguing that every human life is sacred and deserves to be lived to its fullest no matter what..but then also say that someone who takes 30 seconds to see if a fish is suffering and puts it out of its misery needs to get a life...well...
To me it just doesn't make sense. Human life is sacred. Animal life is to be trashed without a thought?

You are comparing a goldfish to a person?

No. I never compared the two. Not anyplace. Just stated that if a living being is suffering I would do what I could to lessen the suffering.

I loved my fish very much, but I never noticed their breathing patterns or whether they were in pain. The ONLY time I noticed a problem was with ick. And I'm pretty sure I'm on the normal end of that spectrum. We have fish now, the kids feed them, I don't even look at them.

I think you can lessen it's suffering without a $400 vet bill.

Which I did. I explained how. It literally took me a glance to see that it was not breathing properly. I didn't spend hours staring at the tank. I walked by, noticed it was suffering, and the entire ordeal took about 5 minutes.

Dog and cats aren't human. I guess we can lessen their suffering without cost as well when they get sick.
I agree and for the millionth time, I am not comparing the life of any pet to a human life. Human life is much different.
i happen to think that if you are going to take the responsibility to own a pet, you should own all aspects of its life. The good the bad and the ugly. You owe it to the pet to ensure it isn't suffering.

I don't think you can compare a goldfish to a cat or a dog. Their lifespan is minimal and they serve no purpose whatsoever except to look pretty in a bowl.

I know of a living being who serves no purpose other than to look good. This being cannot feed itself, clean up it's living space, or take care of any of its own needs. It is totally dependant on humans for survival. It's life expectancy isn't long. Should I spend money to ensure it lives longer? You seem to be saying no. But if this being is a person...then we should?

People have inherent value - they are not comparable.
