Dear Abby: Someone is sitting in "my" Pew
Permalink

DEAR ABBY: If I sit at the end of a pew in church and someone comes in after me insisting I move because it's his/her "favorite" seat, should I do it or ask the person to sit somewhere else? -- GOT HERE FIRST IN PENNSYLVANIA

DEAR G.H.F.: If you're sitting in God's house, you should be on your best behavior. Don't commit a sin of omission; be an angel and shove over.

I disagree with Abby. I am tired of the bullies of the world always getting their way. Everyone is always expected to acquiesce to them.

Good one ed! lol

It used to be I would just acquiesce to people. Oh, we don't want to cause a scene or be disruptive or hurt anyone's feelings, blah, blah. Well, the pushy people of the world understand that about others and take their liberties. So, now that I am in the 'F*ck It" stage of life, my butt is quite warm and happy where it is!

I would simply raise the kneeler, scootch back, and let them pass over me to grab a seat next to me or further down.

I remember when we were growing up we would get to church a little early to get a seat in the front on the end closer to the aisle. That was so my brother and I could see what was going on...a successful attempt to allow the priest to watch us and keep us on our best behavior. Sometimes people would try to get us to move down so they could sit on the end, but we would simply allow them to cross over and sit in the middle. My mother used to say if they wanted that seat, they needed to get there early. They shouldn't just waltz in a minute before Mass and expect a prime seat.

This depends for me. There was an elderly woman at our church that, I believe, had early onset dementia. She was very OCD and you could count on the time by her movement. She went to the restroom at exactly the same time every Sunday. If I had accidentally sat in her seat, I would have moved. She had been attending our church for almost 70 years. She gets her seat...

No way Abby! Unless it's the 1700's and there are family pews.

Actually, there's a Unitarian church in a nearby town that still has the placards showing which pew belonged to which family.

I like to sit in President John Adams' pew when I go to concerts there sometimes.

Hey, we have sat in the same pew since DS was a freshman in high school. Good gosh, since 1998! So have all the other members of our church. Seating arrangements rarely change around here, well during special services it does change. But otherwise, get out of my pew! wink

DH goes to church about 20 minutes early so he gets his spot. If you want his spot, you better beat him to church.

We do share though. biggrin

We have one gentleman who has sat in the same spot for over 40 years. It's not a hill to die on.

You can give the person who is sitting in your spot the evil eye though. wink

It is surprising how territorial people become when it comes to their pew though. Reminds me of kids in school who always have to sit in the same spot. I guess we never really outgrow that aspect of our lives.

I kind of thought it was God's pew, but that's just me.

In the last church I attended, there were "assigned seats". The congregation sat in the same places every Sunday, no matter what. We sat in the 5th pew back, center rows, on the left aisle. It made it tricky for newcomers for sure. They would sit in someone's seat and after the service, someone else would take them aside and explain the situation. Really welcoming, huh? Lol

If someone told me there was assigned seating at a church I visited I would gladly let everyone keep their seats and visit elsewhere the next time.

It was just the quirk of that church. Everyone sat in the same place every Sunday. No matter what. I once sat with my cousin instead of my parents and it caused an uproar at the lemonade hour afterwards.

Not the best church experience for sure.

No. Mostly homemade cookies...PB blossoms, chocolate chip, sugar, etc. We had a group of old ladies who cooked and baked in the commercial kitchen in the church basement who made the cookies.

That church had the best damn food. But the worst atmosphere.

I disagree with Abby too. IF you are particular about where you sit you need to get there early and get it before someone else does.

Yeah, it's like people who save seats and take all kinds of liberties. I am sick to death of bowing down to all of these people.

Perhaps the person asking the LW to move has a disability and that seat works out best for him/her.

I know, for me, being in the same spot each time helps me to focus - whether it's school or Church. I'm partially deaf so I sit in the front so I can hear. If I must read something on a screen, I have to be directly facing that screen or I can't read it.

The letter said the person says it's her 'favorite' seat.

THIS!  DD was in a school play in high school.  Play started at 7:00.  Right after school, one of the girls in the play wrote out "reserved" signs and placed them in every seat in the first three rows.  Guess who went through and picked them up?  Yep, me.  Some of the "reserved" people were already seated.  The screamed at me that I couldn't do that.  I ignored them.  Then they went and got the drama teacher and told her what was going on.  She said, "did you not read the program? It specifically says "No reserved seats"."

Almost half of them showed up AFTER the play had started.  Sorry, Charlie.

Now if it was ONE seat, (Someone went in and got two seat while husband parked the car) that is acceptable.  More than a couple?  Nope.

OMG! People do this at the Christmas program at DD's school. They go and place coats on all the chairs when they drop their kids off in the morning, leave and go to work or wherever and then expect to come back when it starts. Last year, a friend and I showed up an hour early and the first three rows on both sides were 'taken'. Not a single person was sitting in them. I didn't get there early enough this year to see if it happened again.

It might be simply a case of a favorite seat. It might also be a deeper reason and the person feels more comfortable saying favorite seat than explaining a disability.

Why is it so wrong to reserve enough seats for your family?

I can understand 'no reserved seats' means just that but isn't it polite to let a family sit together?

Three rows of 20?  Reserve 60 seats?  Nope.  Not gonna happen.  That's just ridiculous...

I never said it wasn't ridiculous. I said enough seats for your family. Not family, friends, neighbors, etc.

It would help if they got there early enough to choose seats together.

There is nothing wrong with sitting with family, but it is really impolite to block out entire sections for your family. Especially if no one is going to be sitting there reserving them. Come early and reserve the seats yourself like the rest of us.

I still think that if you have a preference for a certain seat, no matter what the reason, you should try to get there early to get it for yourself, and not expect other people to move. What if the person she is asking to move has a reason or disability that makes him/her prefer that seat? Should he/she have to explain it?

Nope.  Especially if you can't be bothered to arrive on time.  You don't get to 'reserve' all the good seats and then interrupt everyone's experience by arriving late.  You arrive late, you sit where ever you can.  In the back.

I agree.  Besides, why should people arriving early to get good seats be pushed further back for people who have not yet arrived?

We have favorite seats at Church but no one would even think of asking someone to move to another seat if someone is sitting in their favorite spot. We would just move elsewhere.
