DEAR ABBY: I am a 23-year-old woman in grad school, and I have noticed something about my male friends. Whenever they meet a new girl, the first comment out of their mouths is about her looks. Then they will expound at length on her physical assets (or lack thereof).
Abby, it makes me furious. Not only does it make me feel self-conscious about my own body, it also makes me angry that these talented, charming and outgoing girls are judged first by their cup size.
Is there anything I can say to my friends to make them amend their behavior? Or am I being overly sensitive and need to accept that this is a "guy thing"? Thanks for your input. -- OBJECTIFIED IN OMAHA
DEAR OBJECTIFIED: It's a guy thing. That they talk this way in front of you may indicate that they consider you "one of the guys." Since it bothers you, speak up and suggest they knock it off. If you do, it may jar them back to reality.
Geez, is their anything people don't get offended about these days? Obviously, she is not one of the guys, and should stop pretending she is, and find some women to hang out with.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
When a guy (teenager or adult) meets a woman for the first time, in the first 1/10th of a second his brain does an evaluation of whether he'd like to have sex with her or not.
Then usually he will shift into reality. (Unless he's drunk, of course.)
(Flame suit --- on)

My guess is that she would like more than just friendship with one of these males she is hanging out with. Her biggest mistake is to play the friendship game thinking it will lead to more.

That's pretty much true.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.

I hang out with guys, but if they say things I find offensive, or that make me uncomfortable, I say so. Politely.
If she is really such good friends with these guys she should be able to express herself to them.
"Hey, I know we have different thoughts about this, but can you not talk about people of a different race like that in front of me?" "I don't agree with you about gay people, and that word you used is extremely offensive. Please don't use it when I am around." "Um, I am a woman. Would you like to rethink those derogatory comments you just made about my gender?"
Generally, I only have to use these phrases once, and then the guys apologize, and we all move on. This girl needs to put on her big girl pants and speak up.
Next up on Dear Abby: my kids expect to eat 3 times a day...and hey, my parents are older than me!
Why do people write letters proclaiming the obvious?
Where's the one about eating 3x a day? I do kind of struggle with that one. I dont' personally need to eat breakfast, lunch and supper, lol. So, there have been times, I was like, oh yeah, I didn't make lunch.

Lol. I was making a joke.
My kids want to eat like 5 times a day. It's rough.

I know but I really don't care to eat 3x a day. I usually skip breakfast. And, if I have a bigger lunch, then I just have like a bowl of cereal or something for dinner. If I have a light lunch like yogurt and a banana, then I will have more of a traditional dinner. DD is more of 3 meals a day type and she ALWAYS seems to want a bit of something later in the evening before bed, like a dippy egg and toast or something like that which requires me to get off my arse and pause Nancy Grace!!

DD calls it "second dinner" like a hobbit's second breakfast.
I dont do breakfast either. I think it's too early to eat. But lunch and dinner are my world!! Love them!!
Me too! I grab my coffee and out the door. If I don't eat till 1 pm or whatever, I dont' care. Yeah, I KNOW that I SHOULD eat breakfast. And, I did try to force myself when I was younger. Well, then I decided, I just don't eat like that and that is OK. So I dont' have to do all the "shoulds" in life.
For decades, I NEVER ate breakfast. Part of me was convinced that if I started eating in the morning, I would not stop eating. And sometimes that was true...
Women do the same thing only we're looking to see if they can provide for a family. Men are hardwired in a different way than women even if we don't like to admit it.
That's the most sane thing you've ever posted.
Too many people want to ignore that FACT and pretend it doesn't exist. Whether it's from biology or environment, men and women are wired differently and place value and importance on different things.

Not so much now. I know a lot of women supporting derelict men.

That's true. It astounds me how many seemingly smart young women who appear to have a lot going for them get into relationships with jobless, drugged up losers--and, worse, pro-create with them with no plan for the future.
Of course, five years and two kids down the road later they realize they picked a bum and will often at that point ditch him--but a lot of damage has already been done.

When my girls were younger we knew a woman like this. One night after we left their house, I spent the ride home explaining to the girls what was really happening in the house. How she was doing all the housework, working all day, making the money to support him, how he didn't pitch in to do a darn thing but eat and make a mess. I wanted my girls to see it for what it was. They mostly already knew but I wanted there to be no doubt. It was a great lesson for them. They were frustrated and mad that she wouldn't leave him. I told them to remember this feeling and not to ever let themselves get in that kind of situation. It's about self respect too - believing you deserve more.
