Thinking I might like to try it. What do I need to get started? Is there a basic kit to start? Any tips?

We do have Hobby Lobby and an individually owned store that I have seen online that looks like it might overwhelm me if I went in without a game plan.
I know that I need acid free paper.
That is about it.

Check with hobby lobby to see if they have classes. SOme places just have a room where you can sit with others and do it. I bet they would have a ton of tips. I don't scrapbook.
Some one on the board does. I am thinking it is LL.
I will see what is happening at Hobby Lobby.
I am seriously trying to find something to do with myself.
I have been trying to paint some again here and there. I miss painting.
I need a creative outlet.

I suggest figuring out what you want to do a scrapbook of first. Get your pictures together relating to that. Then take a walk through the scrapbooking section of any craft store. You can buy pre-cut frames, stickers, letters. You'll definitely want a good scrapbooking pen to write on the paper. Letter stamps are also great. There's really just no limit to scrapbooking. I did one for my daughter when she graduated high school. I included newspaper articles, notes, pictures pressed dried flowers... It's really hard to come up with a list of basics... but for sure paper, pens... and I absolutely love my paper cutter. You can make your own backrounds and frames with that.
I want to do things that can be enjoyed by others.

I have been toying with making a recipe/scrap book of family favorites to be passed down.
I want to include pictures of who made what, little stories about them.
I think I am leaning toward that.

Well that sounds really fun! And you can leave some blank pages so that it can be added to over time. There's got to be a ton of stuff for that. You can literally go crazy!

Scrap books done with love are wonderful. A neice did several for my mom and dad. After they passed, I had no real interest in them. I dont know what to do with them. I cant throw them away,,,,,,
so they are in the closet......
she was soo creative and talented....

That is why I want to do recipes. A family cook book.
I feel like food can connect generations. If I make something for my kids that my grandmother made for me, it's like having her there with us for a little bit.

OK - scrapbooking can get overwhelming pretty quick with ALL the stuff they have for it - so I suggest starting with a kit. You should look into local activities for crops - Michaels usually hosts one once a month on Friday nights, at least ours does.
First, you have to decide what size albums you want to make. 8.5 x 11 or 12 x 12? 12 x 12 is more common and there will be more available for that. It is a popular size b/c pictures are normally 4x6 and so it divides well when placing pictures. I do almost ALL 12 x 12, although I make mini albums that are 6x6 or 8x8, too.
Albums come in different kinds - I started with post bound and like them - the pages you make slide into page protectors. However, I'm now switching over to the big binder type with slip in pages because they hold more. I do not recommend strap albums, they are a pain. And magnetic cling albums are NOT for scrapbookers - they ruin pictures and are evil.
Next, these are the basics you need to get started -
Good quality cardstock in lots of colors. Do not start with "core" paper (that's where the inside is white) or overly textured paper, just get good, basic cardstock from the scrapbook department.
Next - Cutting tools. You need a small pair of precise scissors. And almost every scrapbooker you see will have a paper trimmer rather than scissors for actually cutting paper. It makes straight cuts quickly -
You will need adhesive to adhere pictures and paper, etc. I like tape runners - they are easy and quick. My favorite is Duck brand that you get at Joann's. Use a coupon and buy the 4 pack. You will also want glue dots for adhering momentos, buttons, embellishments, etc. Glue dots are a scrapbookers best friend - they will glue anything, anywhere.
Acid free pens and markers. Get a couple of fine point Zig markers at Michaels for journaling - journaling is writing the story of the pictures. A good inexpensive set of markers is the Bic Mark-ups. It's about $15 at Target for 36 markers.
Now for the fun stuff -
Pretty paper, stickers, ribbons, buttons, that you like and fit the theme of what you are doing. Don't go too crazy at first - it's really easy.
You would likely benefit from a beginner's book, or go on Pinterest and just put "scrapbooking layouts" in the search box. Sketches are design templates for your pages. Like this -
The boxes in the background are layers of different coordinating paper. Your "title" tells us about the story you are telling. Then, tell the story with pictures, like this -
You sound like you are trying to do what we call a "Heritage" album. You might not know the stories, but you have pictures of the relatives -
This one is pretty simple - paper layering under the picture, a little journaling, and a flower embellishment.

I admire anyone who will take the time to do this.
Will I?
Sorry, no.
I don't have it in me.
When I first started scrapbooking, I was actually really fast - pretty paper background, some mats for behind the pictures, and some stickers. I could do a whole album in a day.
Now? LOL - the more I learn as a scrapbooker, the slower I get. I'm more precise - I make my own embellishments by getting wooden shapes and covering them with the paper I like or glitter, etc. When I go scrapbooking all day with friends - it's a good day if I get 6-8 pages done, and I'm usually doing 2 at a time with double layouts.

Don't even start! It's a money-sucker!!! And what I did was never as good as anything LL posted - it was just a waste of perfectly good pictures and paper.
