Seriously. I need to stop cooking and start using up what we have.
Some of you have seen my Excel spreadsheet that lists what is in my freezers. I am in the process of taking inventory again since we stopped marking the sheets. I uncondensed the lines and have a list that is 4 pages long. I know there are a few lines that could be hidden but there are 140 lines with food items listed.
I have 2 pages alone that are filled with soups, the makings of soups (ham bone, etc) and prepped foods. Prepped as in it is already cooked and we just need to reheat it.
The problem is that I will make a batch of something, say soup, and freeze the leftovers. Which when you are using a 6-7 quart pot means there are about 4 quarts of leftovers. There are at least 20 quarts of soup in the basement freezer packed up for single or double servings.
Wow! I was thinking today that I need to use up what's in my freezer. Unfortunately it's not homemade stuff. It's all freezer stuff that was on a good sale.
I miss my big freezer. It isn't quite accesable after the move. I'm hoping soon we can get it moved to where I can use it and start cooking stuff to fill it
Besides the one in the kitchen, two. A 12 cubic foot in the basement and a 22 cubic foot in the garage. And there is nothing on the list from the kitchen freezer.
I was doing the large batch thing and trying to have freezer stuff available. I realized I was wasting more money and time than saving.
Now I make enough for one meal plus a lunch or two. Most of the time I can cook just enough to have zero left overs.
Other than a big pot of beans or corn bread or something like that, we try not to have left overs.

Part of the problem is that I need to stop shopping. Growing up, after Dad got laid off from the Steel Mill, money was always tight. Mom always stocked up when there were sales and she had money so that when times were lean, we always had food. I still have that mentality. Plus, I really like to cook.
I just finished inventory and there was not quite as much as I thought. I had to throw away a few things that did not get put away right. While there is a good variety of stuff, there are a lot of items where there is just one package. Which takes up lines on the spreadsheet. I needed to get everything back under control so I can meal plan efficiently again.
Just to give you an idea, here is the list of Prepped foods that are ready to eat. The first number is quantity in the garage, second column is quantity in the basement.
ETA: Formatting messed up the columns so you can't tell what is garage/basement

I admire you because my cooking never makes it to the freezer. Usually it sits in the fridge and we eat on it a day or two and then it gets down to a low point and we leave it. We have thrown a lot of food away. With DH out of work we're really trying hard not to do that anymore. I made awesome soup today and finished the all the leftover veggies except a scoop of squash. DH threw it in what was left of the soup. He said the kids would never know. They won't! We'll eat the soup tomorrow though since there's not a whole ton of it. I was really happy with how it came it.

NJN, I make what I call "Leftover" soup all the time. We have a container in the freezer for most those little scraps of food that are not enough to keep but you feel guilty throwing away. When the container gets filled, I put it to the slow cooker, add homemade stock and season as desired. All those leftovers could be rice, mac & cheese, veggies (mostly this), a bite or meat or even leftover Chinese food. I let it slow cook for a few hours. Delicious.
Maybe you could make a game of it. Budge $10 a week for milk/eggs/bread, and then try not to buy anything else for as long as you can???
I spent $30 at the grocery store yesterday. I went in for 3 lemons. That's it. Then I decided to get some lunch meat and cheese for lunches. And I saw loose sausage on clearance for less than $2/lb (that I did need to restock). And yogurt was 10 for $4.
But I am back to actually using my meal planning spreadsheets. I have everything planned out for the rest of this week including breakfast and lunch for me and have planned for no leftovers. DH does not eat breakfast at home during the week and buys lunch at work cafeteria.
It's been years since I've been up that way. Loved New Hope and Peddler's Village. My in-laws live in Pottstown. The guy I know is named George L. and is the boyfriend of a friend of mine. Years ago I used to stay up there with them when she was visiting from Cali. There was a bar we used to go to called the Mill Creek.
