This is a guest post written by a fellow pediatric provider in our local healthcare community here in Arizona. I was extremely saddened to read of his children’s recent exposure to measles due the Disneyland outbreak. To read about my journey leaving the anti-vaccination movement, click here.
To the parent of the unvaccinated child who exposed my family to measles,
I have a number of strong feelings surging through my body right now. Towards my family, I am feeling extra protective like a papa bear. Towards you, unvaccinating parent, I feel anger and frustration at your choices.
By now we’ve all heard of the measles outbreak that originated in Disneyland. Or more accurately, originated from an unvaccinated person that infected other similarly minded vacationers. I won’t get into a debate about the whole anti-vaccine movement, the thimerisol controversy (no longer even used in childhood vaccines), or the myth that MMR causes autism (there are changes in autistic brain chemistry prior to birth).
Let’s talk measles for just a minute. It once was widespread in the US. It is now considered ‘eliminated’ in the US (not continually circulating in the population – only contracted through travel out of country). Measles is highly contagious (>90% infectious) and can survive airborne in a room and infect someone two hours later. Another fun fact is that measles is transmittable before it can be diagnosed - four days before the characteristic rash appears. “Measles itself is unpleasant, but the complications are dangerous. Six to 20 percent of the people who get the disease will get an ear infection, diarrhea, or even pneumonia. One out of 1000 people with measles will develop inflammation of the brain, and about one out of 1000 will die.” That sounds fun!
Ok.
Calm down self.
I assume you love your child just like I love mine. I assume that you are trying to make good choices regarding their care. Please realize that your child does not live in a bubble. When your child gets sick, other children are exposed. My children. Why would you knowingly expose anyone to your sick unvaccinated child after recently visiting Disneyland? That was a bone-headed move.
Why does this effect me and mine? Why is my family at risk if we are vaccinating? I’m glad you asked.
Regarding measles, there are four groups of people.
All are represented in my family.
First, the MMR vaccine results in immunity for most who receive it. Two doses provides protection that can be confirmed with blood titers. My wife is in this group.
Second, about 3% of fully vaccinated children do not develop a lasting immune response. They have low blood titers and are not protected against measles. If exposed, this group will likely get the illness. I am in this group. I was thankfully not exposed.
Third, we have the unvaccinated. My son, Eli, is ten months old. He is too young to received the MMR vaccine and thus has no protection. Whether by refusal or because they are too young, exposed unvaccinated children have a 90% chance of getting measles.
Fourth, there are children like my Maggie. These are child who can’t be vaccinated. Children who have cancer. Children who are immunocompromised. Children who are truly allergic to a vaccine or part of a vaccine (i.e anaphylaxis to egg). These children remain at risk. They cannot be protected … except by vaccinating people around them. In August of 2014, Maggie was diagnosed with pre-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a form of childhood leukemia. We have been fighting leukemia since then.
Back to my story …
It was Wednesday. Maggie had just been discharged from Phoenix Children’s Hospital after finishing her latest round of chemotherapy. That afternoon she went to the PCH East Valley Specialty Clinic for a lab draw. Everything went fine, and we were feeling good … until Sunday evening when we got the call. On Wednesday afternoon, Anna, Maggie, and Eli had been exposed to measles by another patient. Our two kids lacked the immunity to defend against measles. The only protection available was multiple shots of rubeola immune globulin (measles antibodies). There were three shots for Maggie and two shots for Eli. They screamed, but they now have some temporary protection against measles. We pray it is enough.
Unvaccinating parent, thanks for screwing up our three week “vacation” from chemotherapy. Instead of a break, we get to watch for measles symptoms and pray for no fevers (or back to the hospital we go). Thanks for making us cancel our trip to the snow this year. Maggie really wanted to see snow, but we will not risk exposing anyone else. On that note, thanks for exposing 195 children to an illness considered ‘eliminated’ from the U.S. Your poor choices don’t just affect your child. They affect my family and many more like us.
Please forgive my sarcasm. I am upset and just a little bit scared.
Papa bear

But this child, mother and sibling were exposed at the hospital.
The hospital.
All kinds of germs there. Shouldn't they have taken precautions of their own? Masks and such?
Yes. Get your vaccines.
And those who cant, know where you are and your risks. Use precautions.

How does this guy know that the child that exposed his kids is not going through the same thing his daughter is going through. Maybe this child, like his, CAN'T get the vaccine. And the child wasn't just out in public. The child was at a drs office. So sick kids aren't supposed to go to the dr?
Now, I'm not defending anti vaxxers, but he doesn't seem to have all the facts and comes of sounding like an idiot...

But isn't there something they should have been doing to protect themselves in an environment in which sick people are an absolute?

I get the anger, but those who are unable to receive the vaccine needs to take their own precautions. Like stay away from crowded places, like amusement parks and airports.
As for hospitals and doctor offices, they are a cesspool of germs. We all know that. It's where sick people go. So wear a mask. Re-apply hand sanitizer frequently. And don't blame someone for being sick.
on my town's FB sight there was a post today from a mother about how people need to keep their kids out of school when they are sick. She started off talking about don't send your kid to school with a fever and went on to talk about even when your kid has the sniffles or is coughing. Her daughter's immune system is weak, blah, blah, blah. Yeah I feel sorry for the kid but I am not keeping my child out of school just because she sniffling or occasionally coughs. If I kept her out of school every time she coughed she would almost never be in school. Some kids do have weak immune system but as a parent dealing with that is your cross to bear.

I don't get why I would be angry at unvaccinated kids? My kids are vaccinated so what do I care?
You may not, but people that CAN'T get their kids vaccinated do. And are you sure that your kids' vaccines took? Sometimes they don't and you won't know until they get sick.

If you read the OP, some people who were vaccinated properly don't build up the immunity. You might not know you are in that category until you get sick. So having others vaccinated and not spreading the disease is important. One of my childhood vaccinations didn't build up the immunity. I only found out when I was pregnant with DD and the midwife I had ranblood tests that discovered this. I would never have known otherwise. While I was pregnant, I was even more careful than normal and as soon as DD was born, I had a booster shot.

I don't know. Seems like a new way to gin up anger between groups. I'm not playing.
The anger stems from the growing anti-vaccination movement. They put a lot of people at risk for hippy ideals...and now we have 95 people with measles.

They were talking about how contagious measles is on the news. The infected person could walk into a room and walk right back out and someone can walk in two hours later and catch it. Sick person doesn't have to have a fever or any other symptoms to be contagious.

Yep. And I wouldn't give a rat's azz about those 95 except they are kids who are that position because of the neglectful treatment by their parents.

The assumption that every risk of infection comes from someone who intentionally didn't vaccinate their child is rather nervy. So sometime downline, there will be another parent ranting about the kid who infected their child, and it might be the writer in the OP's kid who was the source.
If you can, vaccinate. If you can't, then use precautions. Hells Bells, the kids could have caught the flu and been as sick or more so than from measles. I guess he FORGOT the the flu is pretty rampant this year. Is he going to castigate everyone who exposed his kids to flu? I mean, really, even if you were vaccinated, you are still at risk due to the mismatch in the flu strains included in this year's vaccine. I guess that means you are at fault for exposing his kids, even though you did the right thing.
Vaccinations aren't perfect, even the writer admits that his vaccination didn't take well. So, why didn't he get a booster?
So, your kid is off chemo for three weeks? Seems like a caring parent worried about infection, who takes their kid to one of the germiest places on earth, might want to take better precautions.
I can't control that. Can you? Can you control what other people do? What about all these illegal immigrants flooding our country? Do you think they are vaccinated? All you can do is all you can do.

For quite a few of those kids, they weren't vaccinate because they couldn't be. Not because their parents were neglectful...

I think it is dumb to not vaccinate but I don't feel threatened. If anything, they should feel threatened by the flood of illegals who are not.
The school systems in CA should have held up their own law in not allowing vaccinated kids attend school. Glad they are changing the regulation about being able to claim religious reasons. It took 95 kids coming down with measles to wake up CA.

Well you should feel threatened. Do you know for a fact (from a blood test specifically looking for the titers) that your vaccine and the vaccines of your family worked? Most people dont know their vaccines didn't work until they get sick.

In every single medical office waiting room I have been in for the last 5 years have a box of masks and a sign stating if you have a fever, or any other contagious thing, to use them.
Granted, they are in the open at the very place sick people congregate.
But, if my kid had cancer and was so easily susceptible to disease, I would carry my own stash of them and they would wear them in known dangerous areas.
It isn't up to another to keep my kids healthy. It is up to me.
Yes. Get the vaccines. Absolutely get the vaccines.
If you cant, do what you have to so your kid is safe and healthy.

Ok then, quit talking about them. What about the people that just refuse to get the shots?
Why do I have to quit talking about them? If they are allowed to not get them, then why shouldn't law abiding citizens be allowed to make their own choices. Sorry but it is MY child, the State needs to butt out.
Honestly, this seems like some ginned up phony nonsense to try to make political hay. Politicians make the most inroads when they pit people against each other. I have friends that didn't vaccinate. Oh well. Their choice. My kids are.

You have to listen to what the media is really trying to do. If they are beating a story into the ground daily, there is a reason why. Either it makes for great ratings such as covering air disasters or they are trying to spin the agenda. It's either one or the other.
