Ok I was shopping at Dollar General and there was an Amish woman and her daughter. Then they went in to the liquor store and bought a bottle of whiskey.

They may also keep it on hand for medicinal purposes since they don't tend to go to the hospital or anything unless REALLY necessary.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
There were usually younger Amish men in the bars in Central PA when we would go visit my parents. One time, they were drinking (beer) pitchers filled with a drink called Red Death (normally a shot drink).
They were over 21 but not married yet. There were no female Amish there. They were just out for a good time.
I don't really care what they do. But, don't try to play up the Wholesome image when they are not.
Just like there are bad examples, i.e. money, power or celebrity hungry or hypocritical or lying in other religious or political orders there are bad examples in the Amish sect.
Honestly, you think that every Amish person plays up their wholesome image? For what now? The majority aren't cashing in on their image, since they are still living without the things people GET from playing up an image.

Amish supposedly don't believe in electricity but they have iPhones. They don't pay taxes because they don't believe in them but they apply for and recieve all sorts of government aid - food stamps, Medicaid, etc. They sell their goods based on this self sufficient image but they really are not self sufficient.
Like LGS, I lived near a large Amish community (horse and buggy parking spots at the grocery store) and it gets frustrating. They only reject the parts of the government that don't benefit them.

They aren't cashing in? Wow what planet are you on? They havelots of businesses and ahopsand they get to skirt a lot of taxes.
So having multiple businesses make you a sell out? Or are you saying that the ONLY reason the general public go to an Amish business is because of their "public persona"? That it just could not have ANYTHING to do with their quality?
Why is it that people can't have both? Why can't they be successful and stay true to their religious beliefs?

Because they are not staying true to their beliefs. I for one wonder where they plug in their iPhones.

So what you are saying, they should only farm their farms and make their furniture even though they have a hard time making a living on those things given today's governmental intrusions.
And as for the horse and buggy parking spots, thatis on the Grocery Store wanting to keep their liability down. The Amish didnt ask for specific spots, the stores wanted to contain the buggy's intrusions.

I don't care about the horse and buggy spots - I was just illustrating how close we lived to the Amish. Most grocery stores don't have horse and buggy spots unless there is a need for them.
I am saying that if you want the benefits of the government then you should pay taxes like everyone else. If you cannot support yourself doing your Amish thing, and you want welfare then pay in like everyone else. They say they are against cars, but some of them ride to the store in Escalades driven by Amish and pay for their groceries with state benefits. I have seen it and I have heard them talk about it.

Besides the hypocrisy of it all...they drive down wages in the areas they live in. I know a woman with a 2500 square foot house who hired an Amish woman to clean it and was charged $50. By the way, the Amish woman was dropped off by her husband in a Lincoln. The woman cleaned all the houses in the neighborhood for that price. It's a great deal, but not one that Merry Maids could match. Amish roofers drive the cost of roofing down where they work. Which sounds great for the consumer. Until you realize that the Amish don't pay workers comp and when one of their workers gets hurt, they file for Medicaid. So they undercut the competition on an unfair playing field.

They won't own a car but have no problem riding in one. They can open businesses without all the rules and regs that apply to us. They do not have to pay workmans comp or corporate taxes but I do with my 2 person business. They deal ina lot of undeclared cash. And many of them are now on Medical assistance around here.

They SAY they won't own a car. But some do. They buy it and store it at someone else's place and drive it whenever they want.
A lot of Amish are actually millionaires - in actual cash not property, etc. They do not have to declare the cash since it came from their all cash business that are untaxed and unregulated by the government. They then apply for all the government aid they can get. They say they are against modern medicine, but all the doctors we went to in our town...there was always at least one Amish person in the waiting room.
Many favorite experience was waiting on a woman and her mother who were shopping in my store, and she was showing me which stroller she wanted using her iPhone. Then when we rang it up for her, she used a credit card. The Amish don't believe in credit either so that was interesting.
Banks will jump at the chance to lend to them because they pay off their debts so quickly. Yet none of them have a credit score. The banks loan to each person based on how their parents paid off their debt. Do you think that would work for you and I?
They say one thing but they do the total opposite.

I don't entirely understand this thread. Plenty of folks call themselves "Christian" and certainly don't behave in what I would describe as a "Christian" manner, but that doesn't prove that "all Christians are hypocrites".
I would imagine the same is true of Amish folks - they're all just people. Good ones. Bad ones. Ones that strictly follow their rules. Ones that don't. That is true throughout all faiths, religions, classifications and whatever you use to 'group' people.
I just try my personal best to not be one of the Christians that others can point to and say, "See there? Christians are all hypocrites."
Yes lots of people are hypocrites. But why should they get to run roughshod over taxpayers and avoid the govt rules we live under? They can get drunk, stoned and have orgies I couldn't care less but they shouldn't be able to enrich themselves in ways we can't.

It's directed at people who use the government to their advantage.
flan
So any special group with an agenda fits the description?

This. I've known several Christians who preach the Bible but sit on welfare and refuse to get a job. Not because they can't but because they won't. What happened to "God helps those who help themselves?" Or all the other passages about working hard? There are hypocrites in every religion. Every single one.

I don't recall saying I hated them and I don't recall LGS saying that either. I don't approve of people saying one thing, doing another, and profiting off of ithe incongruity at the taxpayers's expense.

The ones I have to deal with, yeah, what I feel is very close to hate. They ruin the roads with those buggies and now I have to deal with trying to get around without damaging my car and tires. And don't even think about trying to buy groceries on the first of the month. They clean everything out with their EBT cards.
