Thomas Davis NFL Man of the Year for charitable work

This is my favorite part of pro sports. Seeing the millionaire players using their money and time to help people who really need it. This man came from truly underprivileged circumstances, and has never forgotten it. He is truly committed to giving back.

He was so moved last night when he won the award, and so humble. And in his speech, he challenged all the other millionaire football players to give.

Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis, whose foundation helps underprivileged children, has been named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year — the only award that recognizes players for their community service as well as their playing ability.

Davis received the award at tonight’s NFL Honors event in Phoenix.

“I am honored to be selected as the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year,” Davis said. “This award means a great deal to me, as it symbolizes the valued work that the NFL, its players, and its 32 teams do in the community. I am blessed to have such a strong support system in my family, the Carolina Panthers and the NFL, which allows me to make an impact in the communities we serve.”

Davis, who had 129 tackles for the Panthers last season, will get a $50,000 donation made to the charity of his choice.

Davis and his wife, Kelly, in 2007 started the Defending Dreams Foundation, a non-profit organization that aims to improve the quality of life for underprivileged children. The foundation reaches 2,000 children annually and has distributed more than $500,000 in financial aid since its inception.

Davis’ charitable group also includes a youth leadership academy, a 14-week, after-school mentoring program for low-income, middle school students. Each year Davis gives two college scholarships to graduating high school seniors who came through the academy.

Davis’ other community contributions include a school supplies giveaway, a Thanksgiving meal for members of a women’s shelter, and a Christmas gift giveaway for children in Charlotte, parts of South Carolina and Davis’ hometown of Shellman, Ga.

I saw that Blankie. I shed a couple of tears watching the video and his speech. What a humble man he is.

I admire the ones who make an effort to give back to their communities. It shows that they appreciate what they have and that they care about the people who are still living in their hometown. They haven't just made their money and forgotten about the people who got them where they are. Good for him!! We need more examples of THIS type of player.

IMHO - if the NFL would spend time and money promoting men like this guy, it would go a long way. Forget about all the guys with substance abuse problems and such, show me more of this - all year round. Not just one day a year. Heck, they could showcase a finalist for this award every Sunday or on Monday night football. Present a plaque to them on the field during halftime. Nope...they just trot them out once a year. Shameful. These are the men our kids should be looking up to.

Great idea! And I have no problem admiring Russell Wilson of the Seahawks. He does a lot of charitable work.
