A picture of the cut was posted to Instagram by Russell Fredrick, who owns A-1 Kutz in Snellville and goes by the name Master Barber Rusty Fred on the social site.
The picture was accompanied with the following text:
"So you wana act grown...well now you can look grown too👴. The grown-up kids special by: @rusty_fred GOT TO REACH EM SOMEHOW.... #ittakesavillage #thiscantbelife #hairloss #rusty_fred #rustyfred #toughlove #lessons #learningexperience #tryme #grownkids #kidsbarber #barberlove #barbergame #a1 #a1kutz #a1kidzz #a1__kutz #hair #haircut #naturalhair #barbershopconnect #lifelessons #yougonelearntoday"
In an interview with the Washington Post, Fredrick -- who has three children -- said he decided to promote the cut after he gave his 12-year-old son a similar old-man haircut and the boy's grades "dramatically skyrocketed."

I just picture this taking off as the new fad. How funny would it be to see a bunch of ten year olds with this?

A ten year old with a pair of knee shorts pulled up to his chest, socks and sandals and a plaid shirt, all topped off with this hair cut.

For punishment my mom would cut an inch off my hair. It worked for me. Taking away TV or confining me to my room didn't work because I was perfectly happy getting lost in a book.
I don't agree with this. Public humiliation through altering a kid's hair so they get laughed at? How does that punishment fit the crime?
I agree with LL. It's mean.
I agree. One thing has nothing to do with the other. If he isn't getting good grades, find out what the distraction is and remove that. Find out what he likes to do and limit that.
This is is lazy parenting and just disrespectful. They are teaching him that if someone doesn't meet his expectations, it is acceptable to alter their appearance. Nice.

However, one time I DID cut my son's hair as punishment. I let him grow it long with the condition that he keep up his grades and didn't get into trouble. Well, he got into trouble. So I shaved it. Not bald, but it was short. But it wasn't stupid looking like this. It was just a short cut.

I also agree that this is horrible. Public shaming of your child is humiliating TO the child.
I feel bad for the poor kid for having a jerk for a father.

The only time I have threatened to have DD10's hair cut off is because she wouldn't take care of it - she wouldn't brush it enough and it would take me 30-45 minutes to get the tangles out b/c her hair is so long and thick and she's tender headed. But that punishment would fit the crime. She brushes it a lot more now - she doesn't want it cut.
I would never cut her hair as random punishment for something else.

I think it different between boys and girls. I wouldn't have cut DD's hair. I think it backfired on me though. He's letting it grow, but his hair doesn't grow down, it grows out...*sigh*...

Taking an inch off vs. making you look like an old man. No comparison. The latter, is just mean.
What's the difference between this and the ones with signs?
I swear, there is nothing a parent can do with out someone having a problem with it.

I personally think the signs are stupid too.
There re is a whole gamut of techniques between humiliation and nothing.
In order to learn about those techniques perhaps the parents using humiliation could pick up a child rearing book and read it. Ask professionals for advice. Talk to a school counselor or pastor for advice.

Or not worry about what some busy body mambo Pam by thinks.
Bunch of passive parents raising brats and thinking they know all there is to know about it.
It's a haircut not a beheading. Hair grows back. It can be changed.
It's funny. People need to relax.

There are plenty of people here who disagree with you. Thank goodness for that.

Humiliating your child teaches them nothing. Whatever lesson this parent wanted to teach...he taught another instead. He taught that when he gets disappointed he can change somone's appearance. He also taught that it's ok to bully somone who won't listen.
And we aren't busy bodies...HE posted this pic, HE put his child's discipline out in the world for all to comment on. We didn't seek it out. He thrust it upon the whole community. So they DO have a right to comment. He made it part of the conversation - which is further humiliating his kid.

It's not funny at all.

Seriously? Making your kid look like a clown for weeks is abuse.
A haircut is abuse?
You'very lost it if you call this abuse.
I'm not going to argue about this. It's a funny article.
Ya'll go ahead and enjoy your view up on that pedestal. Hope ya'll don't get a nosebleed.

It isn't all or nothing Lily. There are a whole LOT of things the parent can do. No one is saying be passive and don't change the behavior. We are saying to use techniques that make sense. The punishment should fit the crime.
You seem to think if we don't agree with you, that we are advocating doing nothing. That is rarely the case. I am advocating taking steps to find something that makes sense and isn't bullying. The parents might need to do some actual work - seeking out help and advice from professionals and books instead of shaving his head and being done with it.

Just the threat of doing that to 99% of kids would be enough.
And all you have to do is shave the rest of it off. Problem solved.
Ya'll are hilarious.
"oh that's abuse"
No. It's a gimmick for a barber shop.
Still waiting for this to become the next fad.

Showed it to my boys. They laughed. Said they would get it. It would be a great April Fool's day joke.
A sense of humor goes a long way.

Just the threat would prevent 99% of it after you actually follow through on the threat one time. The threat alone sounds so ridiculous, I doubt a kid would take it seriously until the follow through happened. "You better bring home good grades or I'll give you a balding haircut!" I don't know of a kid in the world that would take that seriously, unless the follow through was proven.
