Weird Tip/Gift situation

We took MIL out to dinner and a show last night.  We saw "Always, Patsy Cline".  Awesome show.  MIL spent the night.

This morning we stopped for breakfast on the way to taking her home.  We barely sat down at a table with a group came in with someone in a wheelchair.  We gave them the table and sat at a smaller one that was just leaving.  When the WC party was leaving, one member came over to me and thanked me for giving them the table.  She handed me something and quickly left.  It was cash.  Which I promptly gave to the waitress who came by just then.  Who asked me what it was (we were still eating and had not gotten our check yet).  I explained and told her that that was just the way we were raised and we could not take any money.  She managed to catch one member of that party and gave them back the money telling them it was unnecessary.

So, have any of you ever experienced anything like this?  Are good manners and common courtesy so uncommon that people feel they have to tip/gift for that now?

Nope. That has never happened to us.

Very odd.

But, their heart was in the right place.

You did the right thing, IMHO.smile

That was so thoughtful of you and them. Nice the waitress was able to give them the money back. Bet they use that money to help someone else. Some people's hearts are in the right place.

I think maybe that was their way of buying your breakfast to say thank you. Returning the favor kind of thing.

It was nice of you and them.

Never had that happen to me. Never been in that situation.

The closest I get to that kind of thing is letting people go ahead of me at check outs when I can.
