Dear Harriette:Music Bothers Downstairs Neighbors
Permalink

DEAR HARRIETTE: Just some months ago, I moved into my apartment building on the fourth floor. Recently settling in, I have installed my surround sound speakers for my living room. I've watched movies and played music at different levels to test what is appropriate. My next-door neighbors haven't complained, but the couple below my apartment has complained about the lowest volume level. It has become harassing. I have repeatedly adjusted the volume and subwoofer level because I wouldn't want anyone to be uncomfortable in his or her own home. Some possibly important factors: My roommate and I are African-American, the people living below are a homosexual Caucasian couple and they're about 20 years older than us. They have banged on my door with a rude tone while I have had company over, and it's embarrassing. I'm thinking I should call the cops for harassment the next time they come to my door. What do you think? -- Too Loud, Brooklyn, New York

DEAR TOO LOUD: As conscientious as you are trying to be, know that sound travels fast, particularly bass sounds. One way to muffle sound is by putting rugs on your floor. They will help to absorb the sound. This is a wise choice for someone who enjoys playing music in an apartment building.

Regarding the potential racism or ageism to which you have alluded, I recommend that you not allow yourself to be overcome by those thoughts. You and your roommate should stay focused on being calm and clear.

If they continue to bang on your door and behave rudely, speak to the super first and ask for help to dispel the drama. If it continues, call the police in the moment that it's happening. They will need proof of the offense in order for it to make a difference.

What some people do when they are having parties is to alert their neighbors in advance so that they are aware that there may be a number of people and extra noise. You could try that as well. Also, as a rule, turn the music down or off on weeknights after 11 p.m.

Obviously, you try to be considerate of your neighbors. Like don't run the vacuum at 3 am or don't blare your music 24/7. But, there are also so neighbors who are simply unreasonable and beyotche about any noises at all. If you are simply going about your life and they don't like to hear so much as a peep from your TV while you are watching it, then too bad. When you live in an apt you have to accept you are going to hear your neighbors to some extent.

I have to wonder how loud the surround sound really makes the volume level, since the complaints didn't start until after it was installed. And what's with saying it could possibly be a race or age thing? Considering it started after LW added surround sound, and not when they moved in, I think either is highly unlikely......

Yes, do we have to turn EVERY issue in life into a race, gender, age thing? Oh, we are black and they are gay? Americans no longer identify as Americans but are now just a subset of some group.

Dear Abby, I went to borrow an egg from the neighbor and she didn't have any. I am Goth and she is LDS. Do you think that is why she didn't have an eggs? Sheesh.

Bass waves are 30 feet long. So what they are hearing is not the deepest part of the sound the subwoofer puts out. So yes, I'm sure the sound to the neighbors is unbearable.

The next time it happens, the subwoofer guy should, without turning his volume down, go downstairs and hear for himself what it sounds like in the neighbor's apartment.

I am guessing it's much louder than he thinks.

And that mega bass vibration is worse than the volume. It's like an earthquake. If that's the real issue, that's just unbearable. The neighbors might feel like they are living inside a ghetto blaster.

Yeah you can feel the bass more than hear it. My subwoofer can shake the pictures on my walls just watching tv & not overly loud. But when something explodes on screen or the background music hits a low note it vibrates.

my neighbors have loud bass it's super freaking annoying. But, unless at egregious or after 9pm during the week midnight on the weekends we try to just let it go.

When living in an apartment or condo, you have to be courteous, but you also have to expect to hear sounds. There should be something in the lease or even county laws regarding noise levels, and I think it's possibly a violation to install surround sound with subwoofers. The downstairs tenants would be better off seeking legal recourse along those lines rather than flailing about.

I'm a heavy walker. I can't help it. One of my sons is, too. Try as we might to tread lightly, we can't. When I lived in an apartment, I had one neighbor below me leave a note on my door asking me to stop walking because it was keeping his wife from napping while their newborn napped. (I was in bed by 9 PM most nights).

When we lived in our condo, we had a neighbor who ran on his treadmill every night around 7 PM. The whole place shook, and it sounded like rap music thumping and pounding. Pictures would move and we lost a heavy mirror. The complex had a gym, which was available for their use. We lived with it, but put the place on the market and decided to move. Our "for sale" sign was up. Then one morning at 8 AM that same neighbor came to our door and asked if I would not wear shoes because he worked late and my walking was keeping him from sleeping. (I was out the door by 8:10 most mornings).

What ever happened to the idea that, when you're having people over, you should invite the neighbors?

They are unlikely to complain if they're eating and drinking with you and your other guests.

Those days seem to be over ed. And, honestly, there are just a lot of flaky people out there. My mom moved to my town and lived in an apt. And, most of the people were freaking idiots to be honest. There were one or two nice ones who came and went but for the most part, they were just stupid people.

We invited our next door neighbor to one of our parties at the condo. He came and had a nice time. He also had a baby grand piano in his place and if I was real quiet I could hear him play.

The neighbor below us was never home and the unit on the other side of us was vacant at that time.

I have never wanted to socialize with my neighbors. They have always been either WAY older than me (parents of people I went to high school with), or way too bizarre. Liek LGS said, there are lots of strange people out there and I don't like most of them. Lol. Just because you bought a house next door to me does t mean I want you at my party.

Plus, who said anything about having people over?  Is he supposed to invite the neighbors every time he watches a movie?  He's not throwing a party...he's watching a movie...

I don't have anything in common with most of my neighbors.

When I first got married we lived in a small apartment complex. It was just two buildings about twenty feet apart. They were cinder block and the backs faced each other. You could literally hear someone in the next building flush their toilet. I had these neighbors,,,,,, the lady was a screamer. Oh was she a screamer. Man O man did she scream. She was German so it was DA! DA! DA! OHHHHHHHHH! DA!  I couldn't even look her in the face on the street.

I've lived in apartments for over 10 years now. I rarely hear my neighbors thanks to being partially deaf. I've long said that if you're loud enough to annoy me, you've probably already pissed off the rest of the building. I'm extra vigilant about noise levels because I can't hear well enough to know what's too loud. What's "normal" for my hearing could well be deafening for others.

LOL, SB!

I think 11:00 is awfully late to stop the loud music, myself.  I think our city ordinance is 9:00 p.m. every night.

9 is a reasonable quiet time. Not everyone stays up until midnight. The jets Keep me up late often but it's my fault for living next to a military base. We had to get surround sound so we can hear the tv on heavy training days.
