HEWITT - The two teens removed by CPS last night are now in foster care after more than 50 dogs were confiscated from their Hewitt home.

So far no charges have been filed but police say they could be coming as their investigation continues.

The animal seizure has the Waco Animal Shelter almost at capacity and workers are scrambling to make room for the dogs.

It was a long and busy night for Hewitt Police, animal control and the Humane Society as they rescued 57 dogs from a small duplex last night and transported them to Waco Animal Shelter.

Normally animals are held for just 72 hours before they can be placed in foster homes, adopted or sent to rescues but animals that are seized have to stay for at least ten days or until their owner goes to court.

Waco humane society supervisor don bland says until then the animal control staff will be working around the clock.

“it puts a lot of pressure on the staff at the humane society to save more lives and to do everything we possibly can to find a home to free that kennel up so that a dog coming in has a free kennel and so we don't have to euthanize for space,” says bland. “Their taking up 57 of our kennels for 10 days which you know, makes it very full and we have to really work to get more dogs out quicker because these 15 cities are going to continue to bring their normal daily intake into the shelter here.”

The Waco Humane Society had free dog adoptions all day Tuesday on dogs that were already in the shelter in order to make room for the new ones.

Staff worked late last night and most of today washing feeding and vaccinating all the dogs. Despite the conditions they were found in, workers were surprised at their overall conditions.

“The veterinarian said that under the circumstances they were fairly good shape. Normally you see a lot of animals that you know come in, that are neglected,” says bland. “There are dogs that you know, are underweight, [and] all the dogs needed attention but it could have been a lot worse.”

The shelter reached the 90-percent live exit rate, for the first time in January. That's the percentage to average for the next 11 months in order to be classified as a no kill shelter. But bland says the large intake will likely effect numbers their numbers for the next few months.

This is so incredibly sad. The two teenagers are in foster care. I've been in these duplexes. They are TINY. Those poor dogs had to be all over each other. They were reporting that animals and kids were living in filth. So incredibly sad. The kids are fine and safe but they are getting ready to put some down. And it's sad because the ones that will be put down are not the ones that were seized. The ones being put down are the ones already in the shelter. Since they can't legally release the seized dogs until the court hearing they're desperately looking for people to adopt and foster the dogs already in the shelter. We would if we didn't already have these three. Such a horrible situation. This is real abuse. I hope these people get the book thrown at them.

They think it MAY be related to a recent rash of dog disappearances. Over forty dogs have disappeared without a trace from a county a couple counties over. The dogs are just vanishing. So they're looking into that. It's all really bizarre.

Were they animal hoarders, NJN?

It sounds like it, to me.

That is sad. I'm glad the kids are okay. But, I feel for the dogs.cry

NJN, many years ago there was a crazy lady here who would steal people's dogs & horde them. Our dog Keisha went missing at the time. When they finally busted her our dog wasn't among the ones she had so we never knew if she took her or not.

I feel sorry for all the dogs. I hope the free adoption day finds many dogs with new forever homes.

Maybe they can extend the "free" from Tuesday to a whole week, to make it easier to find forever homes for the dogs already in the shelter.
