Been a while since we had a dinner thread. Thought we might as well have a thread for any and everything we eat.
Dinner tonight is ham, sautéed green beans with red peppers and onions, mashed sweet potatoes, cheese biscuits and cranberry sauce. Deviled eggs too.
So? What yall having?

We're having leftovers. But I've had an egg craving lately. I was thinking about making some egg salad sandwiches.

I was thinking of starting this myself. Glad you did.
Tonight was leftover chinese food.
Yesterday was a cook day. I made lamb shanks in the InstantPot pressure cooker (I forgot the tomatoes) with butternut squash risotto in the slow cooker. http://nomnompaleo.com/post/36962406393/pressure-cooker-lamb-shanks
I went to Lobsterfest at Red Lobster yesterday and took 2 newbies with me.....
had a good time.
Had one lobster tail with shrimp and the other with crab meat. And there was the Malibu Hurricane and the apple crusty something....
Came home at 5 pm and was face down on the bed in no time.......
Haven't eaten that much in many many months
and now I remember why

I feel it is too expensive as well, as well as filling up a landfill needlessly.
I have been married for 25 years and have had kids and worked the whole time - only had a dishwasher the past 5 years. We always managed to get the dishes done.

For us it's just a personal decision. Dishes are easy to wash. There are things we will not go without that others would scoff at. For us, paper is something we look at as unnecessary. But I'm not judging. Others would look at things we buy and say we don't need this or that. So I guess that's how we balance it out!

Ww run 50-50 with using real plates and disposable. Some nights we don't eat dinner till 9 o'clock or so. And we are tired so we use paper plates to make clean up a little easier. We won't leave dishes in the sink overnight.

THis is kind of how we do it to. Real meals use real plates, snacks and other things will usually use paper unless the food is messy, but also, if we are doing a quick meal to get to bed, get out the door, etc. then we use paper then too.

We use paper maybe once every 6 months or so. I personally don't like the taste of food on paper plates...maybe that goes on the quirky thread? Lol

I so use paper plates personally, no matter what others use, because they are lighter and easier for my to use. I also use plastic cups.
Even when we go out, I ask for to go cups cause the glasses are to heavy. I am afraid my hands will give out and I'll drop them.
We have a pantry full of dishes and I have several sets put away up in the attic space.
We rarely use any of them any more.

I thought you used them becaue you don't have a dishwasher, and you feed 6-9 people every night, and because it's easier? That's what you said first.
Tell some of those 6-9 people to grab a sponge and some Dawn and get scrubbing!
They do wash dishes.
And I do use them because they are easier.
I can have multiple reasons for using paper products.
You said you were not judging. You sure are sounding pretty judgmental to me.
You ask a question and then nit pick the answers.

And we don't use sponges to wash dishes with. Those things are breeding grounds for germs.

Still not judging you - regardless of what you want to believe. Just wondering why the change in reasons. And also trying to give you some tips on putting people to work! If I was feeding pepole regularly, you can be sure I would be expecting them to clean up...or else the chow line would come to a screeching halt. When I ate dinner at friends' houses as a kid, I took my plate to the sink and scraped and rinsed it. I either helped load the dishwasher, or helped wash or dry unless the parent told me specifically to get the heck out of the kitchen and not to worry about it.

That's how we do it here MM. Whoever cooks doesn't clean up. Usually it's me or DH cooking. Sometimes we help clean up by carrying the dishes to the sink. Sometimes we'll put soup in a bowl to go in the fridge. But mostly the kids clean up.

That's what I do. It also encourages the kids to want to help in the kitchen, so they will know how to cook someday when they are on their own!

We rarely use disposable plates. We have microwave Tupperware plates that we use a lot with the kids, and we use our everyday china...well....everyday.

This is really my thing, too. I would feel guilty if I used paper plates everyday. Besides, I like the solidity and strength of real plates. I want to be able to cut on the plate, and not worry about it tearing, bending or leaking through.

So, we ordered pizza for dinner tonight because I was cooking curry for tomorrow's dinner. DD10 is really sick - we think she has bronchitis. The home remedies include eating onions and bay leaves, which I can't get her to do except in curry. Plus, her throat is sore from coughing and the spices will help coat it.

I didn't know that about spices helping coat your throat. Interesting.
I love curry. Our fave curry place nearby just closed for good. I am in mourning.

Oh, yes. My family doctor is also a family friend. I was at his house one evening with a sore throat and he made me homemade tea with spices - think chai tea, but heavier. It really helped.

Have you given her honey and lemon? I swear it sounds weird but when I was in Mexico and got a sore throat the family mom I was staying with gave me a spoonful of honey with a few drops of fresh lemon. Cleared it right up!

That is amazing. Do you know what spices were in it? Does it matter? DD has bad sinuses and gets sore throats often. Thinking this might be a huge help!
We will try honey and lemon too NJN.

That one he made was really potent - I know it had cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cardamon. You can add honey to this, too. The honey is great because it is anti-bacterial.
If you google chai tea or spice tea for sore throat, you'll get several different recipes. Here's some info I found -
Classic Chai Preparation
There's no one correct way to make chai. Traditionally, Indian families have concocted their own brews based on their individual tastes. Packaged chai mixtures are widely available in stores. But you can make an authentic brew with several peppercorns, a cinnamon stick, several green cardamom pods and cloves and sliced ginger root boiled together with enough water to cover the spices. After simmering the spices for five minutes, remove them from the heat and allow them to steep for 10 minutes. Then return the mixture to a boil, remove from the heat again, and add two tea bags. Steep for three to five minutes. Strain the tea, add a cup of milk and sugar to taste. Return the tea to the stove. Stir the mixture for one minute, until it's heated through. Star anise and vanilla bean may also be used in the spice mixture.
Chai for Sore Throat and Irritation
Several of the spices in chai may help a sore throat heal. For example, cinnamon, cloves and ginger are rich in essential oils that many have antimicrobial properties. They also support good circulation, which encourages quicker healing. Nutmeg and cardamom may relieve irritation by helping to keep your throat moist. Star anise contains an ingredient used in the antiviral medication Tamiflu. And, even without the addition of spices, black tea is a soothing beverage high in antioxidants that promote good health.
Tips for Using Chai for a Sore Throat
Very hot and very cold beverages can further irritate an already sore and scratchy throat, so don't drink your chai until it has had a chance to cool. If you find iced tea more soothing, you may drink chai cold, but avoid ice. In addition, consider watering your tea down a bit. Make the full-strength brew to maintain a pleasing proportion of spice to tea, but weaken the chai with water to avoid having too-strong tea or too-strong spice further irritate your throat.

This one looks perfect because it contains Turmeric - THE miracle spice.
Turmeric Tea
Rating
Prep time: 5
Cook time: 20
Total time: 25
Yield: 1 serving
Ingredients
1 tsp cinnamon
pinch of clove
pinch of nutmeg
tsp fresh ginger (optional)
As much turmeric as you can handle! Start with a teaspoon and go up from there.
1-2 cups of water
Raw honey to sweeten
Milk sub of choice (I went with fresh coconut milk, but almond and hemp would both be delicious)
Make It Like So
Slow and steady stove top method
Simmer herbs and water together for 10 mins
Strain out and add honey and mylk
Fast and furious blender method
Boil water in your kettle and add to blender (a blender with gradual speed increase will reduce likely hood of pressure from steam of boiled water exploding out of your blender)
Add in spices and blend until smooth and unified in colour.
Strain out tea and add milk and honey.
Turmeric can heal just about anything.
Turmeric tea is a serious drink, not for the faint of heart. It might just cure every last ache, pain, and woe-is-me in your life (this might be a little exaggeration, but let me have it).
Why turmeric? How about these 15 reasons:
Natural antiseptic and antibacterial properties to keep the infection away from cuts and burns.
Natural liver detoxifier — is it possible that if we believe liver to be the seat of anger than turmeric can help release that anger? Hmmmm.
May prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease by removing amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain.
Majorly powerful anti-inflammatory that works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects.
Has shown promise in slowing the progression of multiple sclerosis in mice.
Natural pain killer. Yay more of this!
Helps manage weight, and aid in fat metabolism
A staple in Chinese medicine for helping lift mood in cases of depression
Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, it is a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Studies have shown that turmeric can boosts the effects of chemo drug paclitaxel and reduces its side effects.
Accelerates wound healing and repairing of damaged skin
Can help internally and topically with psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions.
Wowzers does it help soothe upset stomach.
Helps to facilitate protein digestion.
A natural preventative against flu viruses.

Last night I made Beef & Barley soup for DH (I was out at a group meeting that included dinner prepared by 2 of the members). It came out pretty good - couldn't find "quick cooking barley" so had to use regular (40-50 min) cooked in a different pot first, then added to the meat/veggies. He thought it was pretty good.
We only use paper plates when we're at our fishing camp. We recycle plastic/metal at both houses, so I don't feel badly in using paper once in a while.
