Car Question for Ed: Wipers

Dear Ed,  smile

I have winter blades on my Toyota Sienna .  And, in PA it is a wintery mess and subzero temps.  I have put in some good washer fluid that has a much lower freezing point.  And, I have the winter blades on my car.  However, no matter, I still wind up with blades that only seem to clear a portion of the windshield and the rest smears and I have trouble seeing and driving.  I try to get the ice off my blades but to no avail.  I need suggestions!

Winter blades? What is this you speak of? I have a Toyota Sienna as well and live in No. VA where we're having record-breaking low temps. Wipers are fine though.

When I lived in WV, I would just have to warm the car up and use washer fluid. I didn't have a garage, so the wipers remained frozen during most of winter. I did make sure I replaced them 2-3 times a year.

I have winter blades and they are amazing! I also have washer fluid that doesn't freeze. You have to make sure the opening to where the washer fluid comes out isn't frozen though and that's my struggle.

The blades...you need to have every bit of ice off them. It's really hard to keep it off, and not just off the blades but off the whole wiper mechanism. They are very sensitive and any ice on them can cause the wiper to not touch the windshield properly. If you go in for an oil change soon, as them to look at the blades. The girl who was there when I got my oil changed played around with the wipers until they were just right, making sure there were no streaks, etc.

That's my only suggestion.

I just let Jiffy Lube take care of my wipers.

Go buy new ones at Auto Zone - they will put them on for you.

Not much to add.

Even in warm weather, its important to clean the blades regularly, since (1) cars and trucks leak motor oil onto the road, then (2) tires toss droplets into the air behind them, and (3) some oil gets onto everyone's windshield.

Take a paper towel, wet it with washer fluid, then wipe each blade repeatedly, moving to a clean spot on the paper towel with each swipe, until nothing black comes off onto the paper towel.

Wiper blades should last years, not months.

"Winter blades" have the spring mechanism covered in a rubber sleeve, so water and ice shouldn't get into the support structure.

Shouldn't isn't the same as "doesn't".

When there's ice on my wiper blades, I pick them up off the glass (once they're no longer stuck) and gently squeeze them (without rubbing) all along the blade and support frame to break all the ice off.

Then make sure they're in full contact with the glass when you put them back down.

Sometimes ice will build up at the bottom of the wipers' arc; that has to be removed.

Sometimes (often) snow or ice will build up around and under the place where the blade arms come out. Again, break it off, or if you're afraid of scratching the paint, pour some washer fluid on it so it melts. (If that doesn't melt it, you're using low quality washer fluid, it's meant for summer use. Buy de-icing washer fluid.)

Excellent advice. I always buy low-profile blades so they don't block my dash-cam's view.
