I was wondering if anyone else had ever thought about keeping bees. I have my final exam tomorrow to become an official Rhode Island beekeeper. By next winter I'll have my very own honey for my recipes.

One of my cousins was a beekeeper in Minnesota. I was always amazed that he rarely got stung.
You are braver than I am, Tinydancer. Good luck and enjoy the honey. :)

With the equipment available these days the only reason you get stung is because you're either stupid or lazy. I hope I am never either of those things...lol

My stupid back door neighbor tried to keep bees.

I love fresh honey. But in a neighborhood where houses are this close, I don't think it's the best hobby to have.

Good luck.

There are 1000's of beekeepers in the cities. It's the ones who don't know what they're doing who make you think this. Honeybee's are disappearing so fast and no one even realizes. If you know what you're doing your neighbor's won't even know you have bees until you give them honey...lol

We had our own comedy show when he was out messing with them. He isn't a cursing man but he sure would get vocal while out there.

There is a group of hives set up in a field about a block and a half from our house every summer. We have never been stung.

And you are right, honey bees are disappearing rapidly. We need them for our food supply.

This is a responsible beekeeper and yes our food supply is at risk but at least we're working on it. Maybe we can turn it around.

I am listening to a book called "The Bees," by Laline Paull. It's about life in a hive. You might like it.

I'll have to check it out. My grandfather raised bees and I remembered having the honey on my toast. I've been interested ever since.

DH and DD are allergic to bees, otherwise I would because I know how crucial they are to our plant life.

My mom's husband is a beekeeper - he has I think over 100 hives (maybe more) and he loves doing it.  It will supplement their income when they sell the pet store.  I like it because he goes all natural, no chemicals or drugs.

I have an irrational fear of bees so I couldn't do it. I like looking at them from afar and it sounds like a neat hobby. My moms neighbor has them and you are right, you don't really notice it. One of the other neighbors sprayed for pine beetles and killed a bunch of the bees, which really sucked for the beekeeper, because there is nothing he could do to prevent it, or to prevent it from happening again if other neighbors spray.

I have a customer who is a beekeeper (Hive Pirate). He has a swarm trap on my property. I've learned a lot of fascinating things about bees!

I used to work for folks (back in So. Cal) who had alfalfa pastures that they would let beekeepers put out hives.  Got paid in honey, and got a lot of it myself!

Thank you, Tinydancer, for doing something to help the honeybee situation. I personally could not, but I'm grateful to those that take on the job.

I learned about the problem years ago but it wasn't until I watched "The Secret Life Of Bees" and I started to learn even more. I finally decided I'd try to help and to educate people about how bad it will be if the honeybee disappears. My sister and I found a class and enjoyed it so much we went for our beekeepers license. It sounds so official but I don't even have a queen yet...lol

DH is starting to do some research on honeybees, because he'll need them for his watermelon patch - 27 rows, times 100 hills, times 4 melons from each hill - YIKES! Yes, he'll need some bees!

My math is rusty (due to old age). Is that 10,200 or 10,800 melons?

I would think one bee would pollinate several plants. And wouldn't there be at least a couple of hundred bees in one hive?

He's a pretty bright guy, he will figure it out.
