MIDLAND, MI -- A Midland County woman's gym membership was canceled after she refused to stop telling fellow gym members "a man" was using the woman's locker room.
Yvette Cormier said the incident occurred Saturday, Feb. 28, when she entered the women's locker room at the Planet Fitness location at 701 Joe Mann Boulevard in Midland.
"I was blocked, because a man was standing there," Cormier said. "It freaked me out because, why is a man in here?"
Cormier said an employee at the front desk told her that the individual identifies as a woman.
After taking her complaints to Planet Fitness' corporate office, Cormier said she was told that the gym was a "no judgement zone" and they would not tell the individual in question to stay out of the women's locker room. The person has not been identified.
The slogan "Judgement Free Zone" is regularly used by Planet Fitness.
A statement released by McCall Gosselin, public relations director for Planet Fitness, states that members can use the locker room corresponding with their personal gender identity.
Cormier disagrees with the policy and feels it's a safety issue.
According to Cormier, she returned to the gym each day between Monday and Thursday. While there, Cormier said she told women in the locker room about the individual she observed in the bathroom the weekend before.
Cormier said she then got a call from Planet Fitness' corporate office telling her that she was violating their "no judgement" policy. She says they asked if she was going to stop talking to other women in the locker room and she said she would not.
Cormier said the representative told her she was no longer welcome at the gym.
The statement released by Gosselin confirms that Cormier's actions led to the cancellation of her membership, though the statement does not go into details of the situation.
Here is a look at the statement, in full:
"Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members. Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity. The manner in which this member expressed her concerns about the policy exhibited behavior that management at the Midland club deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was cancelled."
"I feel it's kind of one sided," Cormier said about the policy. "I feel like I am the one who is being punished."
She feels Planet Fitness could provide a third locker room for transgender people.
The women's locker room offers private changing stalls and includes bathroom stalls with doors.
According to Alison Gill, senior legislative council for the Human Rights Campaign, the gym is within its rights to create a policy that welcomes members to use the locker room corresponding with their gender identity.
"They have that right," she said.

well, she is being punished. Her behavior was a violation of the club's policy. So she got the boot. Go find a gym that adheres to your philosophical choices.

I guess that goes too. But, I expect that someone who is gender-fluid would have a more specific restroom preference. Can you imagine having to decide on a daily basis?
So if you are gender fluid and one day feel like a man and one day feel like a woman then you use the locker room that you feel you are that day? That is what Planet Fitness is saying. That you use the locker room of the sex you identify with. Not that you are or aren't. The one you identify with.

Well, I don't think that it is a free for all. In reading PH's statement, they are looking for a sincere and heartfelt choice. While being gender-fluid might be heartfelt, the switching back and forth would cause disruptions and that person would likely be excluded from switching and would have to pick one. If someone is honoring the policy and not just being a PITA about it, they will hopefully stick to a choice.
Yes, NJN, I thought about that, too. It does not make a lot of sense - you identify with.... Unless you have been physically altered in the appropriate ways, what you have determines what sex you are.....
I could understand someone who has gone through a sex change. But this was a man. Not a woman. He just identifies himself a woman. And while it's wonderful to live in a PC world being naked in a locker room with a man would make a lot of women uncomfortable.

There are change rooms and private stalls. There is plenty of privacy. You can totally avoid being naked in front of a man.

These are my thoughts as well.

They would have had to worry about booting me. If they did nothing to remedy the situation I would have left on my own.
This letting the opposite sex into dressing rooms and bathrooms is going to become a major problem. When it does, I don't want to hear the "I had no idea" crap.

Because anyone can say they are anything. Some perv will take advantage and then you are sharing the locker room with Handy Andy and you can't do or say anything because all he has to do is claim "transgender" and he's still in there and you are the trouble maker.

"Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members."
Except for women who don't want to share locker rooms with men.
Find another gym.
flan
Why should she have to? I think all the women should find another gym. If I went to this gym, I would leave. I hope they lose their female members - it would serve them right. I bet they would change their tune, then.

Exactly. Physiology matters. Use the room for the body you were born with.

BTW - THIS is sexism against women. It says their feelings on the matter don't mean anything. **** you and your feelings - only the transgender people matter.
All this does is breed contempt for the transgender community. It has the opposite affect of what they are hoping for. Because the more this kind of crap happens - the less I care about thier "rights". You ignore the rights of others, I'll ignore yours.

This is definitely NOT sexism.

They do not include enough for every woman in the locker room, and you still have a man walking through there. A woman's locker room is for women. Period. Not someone who feels like a woman.

Yes, it is. Because according to their policy - it would be wrong to even ask. This is RIPE for abuse. It opens the doors for perverts to pretend to be transgendered. It is absolutely a ridiculous over-doing for stupid political correctness. And being politically correct about this should NOT even be an issue. They have a penis - they are not women. Your sex is not in your head, it's in your genitals.

Gender identity disorder (GID) or gender dysphoria is the formal diagnosis used by psychologists and physicians to describe people who experience significant dysphoria (discontent) with the sex and gender they were assigned at birth. Evidence suggests that people who identify with a gender different from the one they were assigned at birth may do so not just due to psychological or behavioral causes, but also biological ones related to their genetics, the makeup of their brains, or prenatal exposure to hormones
The current medical approach to treatment for persons diagnosed with gender identity disorder is to support the individual in physically modifying the body to better match the psychological gender identity. This approach is based on the concept that their experience is based in a medical problem correctable by various forms of medical intervention.
The American Psychiatric Association permits a diagnosis of gender dysphoria if the criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th Edition), or DSM-5, are met. The DSM-5 moved this diagnosis out of the sexual disorders category and into a category of its own. The DSM-5 states that at least two of the criteria for gender dysphoria must be experienced for at least six months' duration in adolescents or adults for diagnosis.

That's not what would bother me. It would be the "man" walking around totally naked in the women's locker room that would be a problem for me. Plenty of people walk around naked in locker rooms. Nothing stopping this "guy" from doing it.
I would be bothered if I saw an exposed peen on a naked "man" in a women's locker room.
Unfortunately the article didn't say whether he was walking around naked. It matters. If he is, I think she has a right to be bothered.

You are selectively copying - you forgot the part where if they are not happy with their feelings, it can still be classified as a mental illness so they can get treatment.
But an association that changes their opinion based upon political correctness is not one I find much confidence in.

He was not. However, he also wasn't a member. So, any guest can come in off the street and go in whatever locker room they feel like. He even admits that he looks like a man. Planet Fitness' policy is to use the dressing room that matches the way you are dressed. WTF???
MIDLAND, MI -- A transgender woman who believes she was unknowingly at the center of a Planet Fitness policy controversy said she has only entered the Midland gym's locker room on two separate visits.
During separate trips to the gym, according to Sklodowska, she entered the women's locker room to hang up her coat and purse, and then to retrieve the items after her workout.
"I'm not actually a member," Sklodowska said. "I was there as a guest of one of my friends."
Carlotta Sklodowski is the woman's chosen name and it is the name she asks that others use when referring to her.
Sklodowska said she asked about the locker room policy regarding transgender individuals before entering the women's locker room.
"You use the locker room that corresponds with how you are dressed," she said the Planet Fitness employee told her.
Cormier has said the transgender woman she saw in the locker room "looked like a man" and was wearing men's clothing.
According to Sklodowska, she wore leggings and a baggy t-shirt during both trips to the gym. She said many people tell her she looks like a man, and she could see why Cormier would see her body structure as masculine.
"It's obvious, even from the back," Sklodowska said.
The Midland resident said she uses public bathrooms all the time and has never had any issues previously.
"No one has complained yet," she said.
Sklodowska said she did not observe anyone in the Planet Fitness locker room who looked distressed about her presence.
Friends told her about the news story circulating regarding Cormier and the locker room policy. That is when Sklodowska figured out that it was likely her to whom Cormier was referring, since she had visited Planet Fitness and is the only transgender woman she knows of in town.
"As far as I can tell, I am the only one in Midland," Sklodowska said.
In general, Sklodowska said she does not see Midland as a very welcoming community for a transgender woman. She has, though, found a group of friends who she said are very supportive.
"I have loads of friends around town," she said. "They are all straight ladies. We have wonderful times together."
Letting the public know she is a member of the Midland community is beneficial, Sklodowska said. That's why she was willing to come forward.
"It's in my best interest," she said.
In reference to Cormier's safety concerns, Sklodowska said she wants to make it clear that she is not looking to harm anyone.

Which is stupid b/c this leads to higher suicide rates. It doesn't help - it makes it worse because they THOUGHT it would help and when it doesn't, they feel hopeless, and often kill themselves because of it. This approach is wrong and does not help. Many people with sex re-assignment surgery are not happy, and would be better served with mental therapy than a drastic physical change.
But regardless - if the physical changes haven't been made, you are still the sex your genitals dictate.

Does the body change on it's own? No. It doesn't go from being male to female all on it's own. Can a person choose to get pregnant if they are male just because they feel like a woman in their mind? NO. The mind is the fluid part here, not the body.

Its a private business and they can run it the way they want. It doesn't bother me. But, if they can let a person pick their own locker room then other businesses can make choices as well.

I think Planet Fitness is not following their policy very well, or at least very selectively, depending on the person. The first sentence of it is:
"Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members."
Does that mean all members, or just transgender members? I can see how a peni$ in a women's locker room would be intimidating and non-welcoming to some women. But I guess Planet Fitness cannot see that.
