Okay all of you who haven't moved in a really long time . . .

I have a very big question.  I don't plan to move soon, but I know that I will move at some point.  However, I have always moved every six months or so and had managed to whittle my personal belongings down to just my personal stuff and clothes (rented furnished for a long time!) and now I am accumulating things again.  A lot of things.

Here's my question though - should I be keeping the boxes that my things come in?  My vacuum cleaner, crock pot, television, etc?

Given that I will eventually move, should I have those boxes handy or is it just easier to pack them another way?

I keep them because I have the room to. If you have the room, keep the boxes, flattened. It does make it MUCH easier to move things later on. If you don't have the room to keep the boxes, don't.

Oh...I keep the boxes for the things that would be awkward to pack or protect another way. The TV, yes I would keep the box for sure. The vacuum cleaner, I probably wouldn't keep because it's easy to take along when you move.

Keep the boxes if you can.

Do you put the original things back in the same box, or do you use the box to pack other things? For instance, the big crock pot box would hold most of my plates/bowls/etc.....

I throw them away. It's clutter.

We have a garage full of expensive packing boxes. They probably won't be any good when we do move. We don't store the boxes we buy things in though.

Hmmm. Okay. Thanks guys! I will probably have a lot of questions about setting up a permanent dwelling now that I figure I'll be sticking around a while!

It's easier to pack another way when you need to move.

It depends on the item. Our TV - not sure how we would have protected it unless we kept the box. It's a bigger flat screen TV and I would not have been comfortable putting it in the moving truck any other way. The movers were actually really happy we had kept the box.

I used the boxes to pack what originally came in them. Like I said, I wouldn't keep a box for an item that I could easily pack another way. If it's fragile and you worry about how you would pack it, keep the box.

I flatten the boxes and stow them in the attic or basement or under the guest bed.

No room there in my house.  That's where I store the dead bodies.  No one thinks to look in the obvious places.  They all looking in the freezer or the back yard.  biggrin

I don't like boxes. I like bins, and they stack inside each other to store.

I used to move a lot so kept the boxes for the small appliances such as the coffee maker. Once I was in my current house for 6 years I tossed the boxes. They did make packing easier though. And LL's plastic bin idea is a great one.

I have usually used the bins for moving - I love them too. But now I have all this stuff that came in boxes!

Bins are great for packing things like towels, clothing, shoes, toys, books, and breakables. We had one small bin with the DVDs player, cords and remote in it, another one for the dvd's, one for the Wii and all of its games accessories, etc. But I also had the Wii in the original box inside the bin. Electronics and things that are very breakable should be packed in their original packaging to ensure its safe arrival.

Now, when I move, I dont move across town, I move across states. So my advice is more geared towards moving a distance, in a moving truck, with little real control over how things are handled. If you can move across town, you can put the TV in the backseat of the car and take one trip over just for that...so you might not need the box.

OMG - this was a huge argument between me & Sean. He'd keep all boxes. I never kept any. Now he lives in Cali & I have a closet full of damned boxes!

I keep boxes if it's what I store the appliance in on a daily basis. Like my food processor. I keep it in the box because it's easier to keep all the attachments together if they are all stored in the box together. Otherwise, no, I wouldn't keep a box if I had to store the box somewhere else.

Ok yeah this.  I do keep boxes like that.  I was thinking empty boxes.

I do this, too.  And actually, I keep all boxes for collectables.

My pantry shelves in the basement look like a kitchen aisle at BB&B.
