It's his now

Went to the DMV office this afternoon with DS1, and transferred ownership of my old car to him.

It's a Camry with 170,000 miles, most from the years when I was driving it for work.

But then I got my current job 7 years ago, the job came with a company-supplied car,

and I didn't want to sell the Camry, in case the job (and the company car) went away suddenly.

But having a car that just sits most of the time is not a good idea.

So the car needed (needs) some work.

He was driving a Corolla, put 210,000 miles on it. Bent it a few times.

A few months ago, the Corolla's 4 cylinder engine suddenly became a 3 cylinder engine, not drivable, not worth fixing.

DS needed a way to get around (and get to work) so I loaned him the Camry.

Better that the car gets used than continues to sit and age.

He doesn't manage his money. Good job, pretty good income, spends money foolishly, so he's broke.

He doesn't take advice. If he took advice, he'd have reduced his spending, and saved for a new car. He didn't.

But now he owns an 18 y.o. car with 170,000 miles on it.

I HOPE he will get tired of fixing it, and use it for a down payment on something much newer and better.

BUT at least now I don't have to insure it any more.

Well ..............

I know the engine and transmission are good. But the a/c doesn't work, and it's got a couple of leaks that might be expensive to fix.

BUT I'm certain it will reliably get him back and forth to work.

But that's the kind of car he will drive until he becomes financially responsible. glad your old car could go to good use.

I'm glad you were able to do this for your son. I don't know how old your son is, but I don't see anything wrong with doing what you did. Your car, do with it whatever you want.
I think doing this has helped you feel a little better, and that is a good thing. :)

At least he can get to work, and you lowered you insurance bill.

Sounds like a good plan, ed.
