Starbucks Baristas Stop Writing 'Race Together' On Cups

SEATTLE, WA - MARCH 18: Starbucks Chairman and CEO Howard Schultz addresses the 'Race Together Program' during the Starbucks annual shareholders meeting March 18, 2015 in Seattle, Washington. Starbucks baristas will no longer write "Race Together" on customers' cups starting Sunday, ending as planned a visible component of the company's diversity and racial inequality campaign that had sparked widespread criticism in the week since it took effect.

The coffee chain's initiative will continue more broadly without the handwritten messages, Starbucks spokesman Jim Olson said.

The cups were always "just the catalyst" for a larger conversation and Starbucks will still hold forum discussions, co-produce special sections in USA TODAY and put more stores in minority communities as part of the Race Together initiative, according to a company memo from CEO Howard Schultz said.

The campaign has been criticized as opportunistic and inappropriate, coming in the wake of racially charged events such as national protests over police killings of black males. Others questioned whether Starbucks workers could spark productive conversations about race while serving drinks.

The phase-out is not a reaction to that pushback, Olson said. "Nothing is changing. It's all part of the cadence of the timeline we originally planned."

He echoed the company memo, saying of the Race Together initiative, "We're leaning into it hard."

Schultz's note acknowledged the skeptics as an anticipated part of the outreach.

"While there has been criticism of the initiative — and I know this hasn't been easy for any of you — let me assure you that we didn't expect universal praise," it read.

He said the campaign at its core aims to make sure that "the promise of the American Dream should be available to every person in this country, not just a select few."

What did I say when this came out? He does this FOR PUBLICITY! He does this with whatever the topic de jour is. He did this with guns. It caused a HUGE uproar. People came out in droves to support his company. Others picketed. A week later he retracted his statements. He did this with breastfeeding. Made it a huge issue and offered free COFFEE, only coffee, to all nursing moms. So I guess you have to whip out a boob to show you breastfeed and to get your highly caffeinated cup of coffee that you are now going to put into your nursing child! Then he backed off this. He took a public stance on gay marriage. Again, tons of publicity. A week later he withdrew his comments. This guy is a publicity whore. And quite frankly a good one. He keeps his name and his company's name in the media constantly.

People just want coffee. They don't want all that other nonsense.

City council finally approved the plans for us to get a Starbucks. It will be right next to the police station and across from all our local government services.

A cup of coffee is not that much more than a cup at Dunkin Donuts.  The lattes and cappuccinos are $5-6, similar to Dunkin donuts.

I think he seriously damaged Starbuck's reputation.

What policy?  Since before Starbucks opened in the NE, smoking was already outlawed in public buildings and restaurants, coffee shops.

Yes, it's always been outlawed to smoke inside. But a few years ago he came out with this policy that you couldn't smoke on his patio's. You know, where people sit outside at the tables? Then he came out further and said he didn't want anyone smoking within 25 feet of his store or his patio. People were asking how he was going to enforce this. He had to admit he couldn't force people to follow his rules and that he couldn't force his barista's to constantly monitor smoking. Many of the city ordinances already covered how close you can smoke to a building. He had to retract his whole "Smoking is evil." campaign.

Hadn't heard that one.  People do smoke when they sit outside.  He seems to be one of those people who try to market through "supporting" the latest trendy social issue.  I think he fails on this one.  He would have done better to open up stores in inner cities.

Maybe his personal reputation but the company won't suffer. People have made Starbucks part of their daily routine and they won't change it because of this guy. Heck, most probably don't even know about the controversy.

I dint know why people keep getting the coffee there. Is it really a $5 cup of coffee? Or is it $2 coffee in a $3 cup?

With all the creamer options, why pay so much for a logo?

If I were to stop there and had something written on the cup I would ask for another. Let them eat the paper cost enough and they will stop shoving PC crap don't people's throats.

There is always something written on your cup. Typically it's just your name and your order though.

Very very few people order order regular drip coffee. And it's pretty cheap - about 2.50 for a large. Around that much. Not exactly sure.

My friend and her DD have uncommon names. It's fun seeing how the barista spells it.

My name has different ways of spelling it too. Whenever I order and they ask my name, I say it and then say "spell it however you want". Not going to be offended if a barista doesn't spell my name right. My FIL still doesn't spell it right after 25 years.

I'll be 50 this year and my Auntie still spells my name with an "I" instead of "Y". Everything I have ever sent her was signed with a "Y".

Trade you for my FIL who spells my name with a Y instead of an I !!! Lol

I went off on him once and told him I was the mother of his only grandchildren (at the tim) and the wife of his oldest son - was it too much to ask that he learn how to spell my name?

Apparently it was too much to ask. Actually, he is probably spelling it wrong on purpose now just to piss me off.

You know all they did was write 2 words on the cup. They didn't start a convo unless the customer asked about it. Not really as intrusive as some were making it out to be. Half the time I bet people were out the door before they realized their cup had something on it.

But Starbucks just needs to sell coffee. Nothing else. If this guy wants to become a politician then he needs to move into politics. People don't want politics with their coffee. They don't want to have to deal with all that crap. Especially before they've had their java. He uses his business to to promote his personal issues and keep his store in the news.

Well, it's not really a fail from a marketing stand point.  For a week all the news channels covered him and interviewed his barista's and customers.  So for a week he got free publicity.  I'm sure his stock went up a bit.  I think he's a tool.  But from a business point of view he keeps his business on the front page.

Yes, Marketing FAIL! But, it is the WORST kind of marketing. Cashing in on a sensitive issue while scolding people. Yeah. Stupid.

Nope, stock took a hit, actually the stock hasn't done well in general.  His views are on the front page and it is bad business. Good news is lots of other coffee places are profiting from his fail.

This isn't even a blip on my screen when I decide to go.  We rarely go anyway because of budget.  But right now gold card members are getting March Madness.  Last Monday was free tea day.  Tomorrow is Buy a coffee get a free pastry day.  One day I earned a free drink by buying a sandwich.  You're saying they are making you spend money you wouldn't normally spend.  Not really.  I spend money there SOMETIMES.  So if there's a sale I will specifically go on those days.  What he does or doesn't do with politics doesn't even enter my mind.

You may not be buying more, and even if you are buying less, for the moment, but you'll be back. They are just keeping their BRAND in the public domain. The feeling associated with "the incident" will fade quickly and the Brand will be remembered more strongly.

...as they say in Hollywood, any publicity is good publicity. It's especially so after you've peaked.

I agree ladyloon. Last Monday was free tea day. Actually BOGO. DH and I love their chai so we went and got two for the price of one. Tomorrow they are handing out free pastries to anyone who buys coffee. If you have a gold card. And getting a gold card is as hard as signing up to receive one in the mail and then putting money on it. I always use my gold card to pay because I earn free stuff all the time. If you buy ten drinks you get one free. I don't rush out and try to buy a bunch of coffee just to get the stars but DH and I kind of do date night two days a month and go and get coffee. That's four coffee's a month. So it adds up. I like the coffee there. We don't have a Dunkin Donuts here. There was a take off coffee shop but it closed down. There are three Starbucks within a few minutes of my house. We don't really have much of an option. Unless you go to a fast food place like McDonalds and get their frapp take off thing. But it's not even close to Starbucks. Oh, I think we have a store that does coffee but they're only open from 6 am to 10 am. We went once.
