Catholic High School Insists On Pre-Approving All Prom Dresses, Prompting Controversy

Posted: 03/24/2015 4:27 am EDT Updated: 1 hour ago

A controversy over prom dresses has erupted at a Pennsylvania high school following the announcement of a new policy requiring girls to submit photographs of their dresses for pre-approval before the big event.

According to the York Daily Record, Delone Catholic High School in McSherrystown announced the new policy in early March. It states that “dresses cannot be too short, too low-cut, expose too much skin around the midriff or be ‘inappropriately revealing.’ It also states that all students and guests must dress in gender-specific formal wear.”

Delone's prom will be held on May 1.

Some Delone students and parents have kicked up a fuss about the pre-approval requirement, contending that the notice was too last-minute and that dresses -- some non-returnable -- have already been bought.

"I think it's a little ridiculous," Margaret Eser, whose daughter Audrey is a student at Delone, told the Daily Record. "If you already have a dress, what are you going to do then?”

As WPMT notes, parents have launched an online petition to protest the “antiquated and unreasonable” policy.

“We have not been given a set of guidelines in a reasonable amount of time,” the Change.org petition reads. “Our children will not undergo scrutiny of prom gowns based on outdated, unrealistic expectations and rules implemented at such short notice.”

Thus far, more than 240 people have signed the petition.

For its part, Delone has defended its new prom dress policy, issuing a statement last week that said the school “has the responsibility to ensure that Catholic values and moral integrity permeate every facet of the school's life and activity.”

“On September 8, 2014, the school released to all students and the community the formal and semi-formal dress code guidelines for the school year. The principles in these guidelines have remained steadfast for the past 23 years. The only change this year is the requirement of young women to submit photos for review by prom moderators,” the statement said. “The early release of the guidelines, and the addition to them, was a proactive approach to prevent student's embarrassment and disappointment of being denied entrance to prom due to dress code infractions.”

To me, it at least makes sense. Why not have the dress approved and know it is OK going in rather than showing up and then getting kicked out?

Well, they all knew the guidelines before they bought the dresses, right? So there shouldn't be a problem . . . right?

I don't know.  I have a teenage daughter.  It really isn't that simple.  Unless you want to dress like Little House on the Prairie.

But, I think maybe at least offer an optional preview rather than mandatory and then if you dont' get it approved and want to take a chance to not get in, then that's on you.

Well, if you choose to go to Catholic school than you get everything that comes along with it. Like prom dresses from Little House on the Prairie.

Our prom dresses looked like formals. Prom dresses today are more like party or club dresses.

I think it is a good idea. If they are having trouble with people following the rules then this is the answer.

I agree with Tiganello, you choose to send your child for Catholic education, and along with that are dress standards (along with other rules and such). Don't like them? Then send your kids to a school that doesn't have those standards.

Yes.  I agree with this.  Catholic schools have been known for nuns using rulers to measure hems for eons; why would prom be different?

I don't remember our school doing that...but then I wouldn't have been shortening my skirts!

There is a Catholic school in my old neighborhood called Bartholomew something or other... The girls were all walking around with BJ on their sweaters. It was hysterical.

Don't forget to leave enough room for Jesus when dancing.

I think it's a good idea. If parents/kids can't follow the damn rules on their own, then they need to be forced to. Or go to another school.

Shoot - DD had to bring in her 8th grade confirmation dress for approval. But the restrictions for that dress were ridiculous, it was a church event so I understand, but finding a dress to meet the standards was almost impossible.

And I have posted before about Sister Jane who stood at the door at prom and if you were exposing too much, she would safety pin a dinner napkin across your bosom to hide it. Or else you could leave. It was Sister Jane's party, her rules. We didn't have a problem with it.

I think showing dresses ahead of time is a good idea. But a pic of the dress on the hanger isn't a good judge of how it looks on. It may look WAY more indecent on due to body type.

This is what you get when you sign up for private school. The only thing I think they should complain about is not having the standards in time to shop. The OP says they didn't know about them until the shopping was done.

Yeah, but the school says that they put out the requirements in September. All the OP didn't know before shopping was done was that the dress code would actually be enforced! Oops!

Then they need to shut up and deal.

Even though there were kids who "got away" with some dresses we didn't believe they should have, we always used the "if in doubt, don't" motto. More people need to do this instead of trying to get away with something.

Exactly. No merit to their complaint of short notice.

If they've already bought the slutty dresses, they can have their own Slutty Dress Party elsewhere.

I've never seen a dress or a skirt that would keep a couple from doing what ever they both want to do.

Yeah, and the nuns used the rulers in a different way, depending on their mood of the day, your desk got whacked, or you did.  Crossing Sister Alice Vincent was never a good thing.  (note, she was also deadly with those huge rosary beads they wore from their waist, cords.)

Went to schools run by both Sisters of Mercy, and Sisters of Charity.  Yeah...right....

I would rather they do this than just have some vague dress code that is open to interpretation and that they use to keep kids out at the last moment.
